As old as these movies are seems like they'd be a reminder how old I am. Instead they take me back to my black and white, 3-channel childhood and make me feel like a kid again
I know this is from 1945 but it seems to have some of the vibe, speech patterns, and even makeup and styles of pre-WW2. Post WW2 movies seem different to me....but great movie!
I agree. Some commenters have called this film noir, but as you say, it's more an old fashioned mystery with plenty of comic relief. Film noir hit its stride post-war.
At the time, Dave O'Brien also appeared regularly in MGM's "Pete Smith Specialties" {"Here, Joe Shmoe attempts to rid his happy home of a pesky fly........of course, the fly has *other* ideas."/ *Joe tries to swat the fly on the ceiling while standing on a rickety chair- that falls over, knocking him to the floor* / "Undaunted, Joe has *another* idea.......which should be good for at least two weeks of an enforced hospital vacation....."}.
When I was a kid, most could dress in high fashion, however you really needed skills, first, you could buy remnant cloth cheaply, because it had a stain or rent and could not be sold as first quality. Remnant cloth being sold by the bolt or length. You could buy patterns for any type of clothing. Simplicity patterns was one brand I remember. Then you needed a good tailor, for either men's, women's or children's clothing. I learned all this at age 10. Also many of the material (cloth) stores dated back as far as the 1890s in NYC.
Suits are a kind of uniform. Yes, they can make everyone look better but most men never liked them. Today, you can express yourself whatever your masculinity means to you and you feel free and comfortable. Suits were a prison for many men. Typecasting gender and expensive to take care.
Those were the days….weren’t they , I miss them so much…2023 now ,and no polished shoes,no trilby hats,no white scarfs ,no men in nice suits ,with nice shirts and ties, hardly any men that open doors for ladies…the f word thrown about. …Remember the word “Gentleman “ I do and I actually knew a few…Ha! Well….
@@iap-ug3oy Yes…I feel that way too! Remembering the past…is often my Happy Place these days! Mum and I still enjoy old b/w movies 🍿 too! Have a peaceful and safe day dear. 🤗💝 P.s…I’m pretty sure we’re in 2024 now…🤣👍
I wish Alan Mowbray had had a larger role in this. He was marvelous in the "Julius Caesar" rehearsal - just those few lines: the richness of his voice and his presence. - I wonder if he managed to do Shakespeare in his long career. The lead, Jack Mulhall, whom I've never heard of, was very good. His voice was clear and sublime. - The actor (?) who played his sidekick cab driver was terrific. Natural and low-key acting. - I sat here envisioning, by the way, that the blond waitress' family was all lined up in the theater, waiting for her premiere performance, signaling a great career. - She was awful. Poor thing.
Mowbray was a stage actor but did not do much Shakespeare He is most memorable and hilarious as the drunk in John Fords classic "My Darling Clementine"
I can watch vintage movies over and over.. my wife often says to me “how many times have you seen this movie?” .. I always reply, who’s counting.. One not do old movie I watched yesterday here in June 2024 on TV..l reminding my wife that we first saw this movie as the test audience in Pittsburgh. we were just a couple of kids, my wife said she had never dated an older man. She was 18, I was 22. No one knew what the movie was about, there were no posters, no reviews, nothing, it was advertised in the paper that you could watch the great Waldo Pepper at the Fulton or the Stanley theater in Pittsburgh downtown tonight at eight, but you will be a preview audience for another movie first.. my wife and I were on a date.. we just had gnocchi’s at Dells restaurant in Bloomfield, and we went downtown to watch the great Waldo Pepper movie with Robert Redford, but first- an additional movie that we would be the test audience first time viewers .. The first movie started without any music or credits. It just started into the nighttime bonfire beach scene when the young woman and the young man paired off and she went into the ocean, but he did not. there was an older man sitting in the seat, directly in front of me. I think he was there to see the great Waldo Pepper movie, which was about radial engine airplanes, and the birth of aviation… they should have screened or warned people about this movie. We were the test audience for. Because that man in front of me was standing up out of his chair at times in suspense during that first movie. That first movie was jaws. to this day, 49 years later. That was the most entertaining trip to a theater ever for both me and my wife. that night, when Jaws was over. And the second movie, the great Waldo Pepper was about to start. The entire theater emptied. No one was left in the theater after seeing Jaws.. when I watched Jaws last week here in June 2024, it hit me that we first saw that movie 49 years ago in 1975. when people remark about age or time, or some thing in the distant future that they think that they will never arrive. I always tell them “don’t blink.”
I just amazed how these old 1931 or 1945 films were stored so nicely second thing is where are these Brilliant writers gone? Did today's Hollywood writers notice how they wrote all mysteries, thriller or crime films and plenty of things to learn from those old days writers, Salute all of them ❤❤❤
*I bet the residents of Flatbush, Brooklyn, got a laugh at the mention of their neighborhood back in 1945. With the movie industry out in Los Angeles nowadays every place in movies is somewhere in southern California.*
A theater critic ( Dave O’Brien) teams up with a cop( jack mulhall) to investigate the murder of a broadway actor.he finds someone put a real bullet instead of a blank in an antique gun prop and the critic/detective wants to know why-the mystery is solved at the end of the movie! 🍿 Alan mowbray was good as the stage actor-although in real life,he never took the stage-but he was in the movies for a long time! This is great to watch-for nearly an hour! 😊😊😊😊😊
As I watched this I couldn't help think of the shooting on set by Alex Baldwin in New Mexico. A live round instead of a "blank" killed someone and wounded another. What other movie would have this in it? 10/26/21 🕵️ 🎥
A muzzle loader too, not a cartridge firing gun. Confirmed, when the detective said, "a ball" so it was a black powder (antique) muzzleloader. And also, it is the job of the Property (prop) Master, to check and maintain the firearms to insure that only prearranged blank firing (theatrical) firearms are ever brought onto a set, *no personal props* are ever allowed onto a set. Actors must sign a detailed agreement as far as insurance and indemnity and liability clauses.
ALL the great names!! POWER! PRICE! CRAWFORD! JOHN Crawford, that is; and Stanley Price; and Paul Power. Haven't seen this flick yet? Picture MONROE standing over a subway grating. JAMES Monroe.
Dave O'Brien was a former chorus boy who would become a star in "B" westerns, and later a successful comedy writer (under the name David Barclay) and TV director. He also was in the classic "Reefer Madness" as the character Ralph. Info from IMDB
@@QueenBee-gx4rp David O'Brien was a keen yachtsman, he died aged 57 of a heart attack aboard a 60-foot sloop named The White Cloud while competing in a yachting race off the California coast near Catalina Island. He apparently had been experiencing symptoms of cardiac problems for several weeks, but did not seek medical attention.
Absolutely! More fun than we parsimonious ones deserve! Verbal compliments are one thing -- "Talk is cheap!" -- sent funds to where they are needed and deserved, just that. Send Y-T money; they are in NEED of it, young Ronnie B.
I really like the movies from the 30' & 40's. I know the names of so many of the actors. The story lines are cleaner, straight forward; though the dialogue sometimes......... .dumb. 18:52
