Mystery Of The Buried Ferrari Dino Solved -- JALOPNIK ON /DRIVE

Back in 1978, a 1974 Dino 246 GTS was found buried in a yard in Los Angeles. With the help of the Dino's current owner and one of the investigators on the case, who fed us some previously-unreported details, we wrapped it all up into a mini-documentary for this week's Jalopnik on Drive. It's the real, real story about the buried Dino.

it started life as a freshly buried vw bug, once it reaches maturity, it emits pheromones to attract the native petrohead to its location, once unearthed, it emerges as a fully grown Dino.

my dads dodge dart was buried over 40 yrs ago.he blew the engine up,and left it at my aunts house in quebec.we are in nb now ,he said he was done with it,and started a family.the neighbor of theirs dug a hole across the road,and rolled it in,and buried it.its only 6 inches or a foot from grond level to the roof of the car.they know where it is exactly.we are going to film the dig.and we are going to quebec this year with the car trailer,and the neighbor will dig it back up for us with the same machine it was buried with.he said he wont sleep till he gets his car back,lol.he is taking it home in whatever condition it is too.his registration is still in the glovebox,and the plates are still on it :)

@shananagans5
@shananagans5 9 лет назад
NellsStuff Exactly, in the 70s it was common to have white lettering or whitewalls on one side & all black on the other with no real, proper, inside or outside. It was essentially personal preference. lol I recall one time my mother couldn't decide if she wanted the whitewalls or not so she had one side mounted whitewalls in & the other side the whitewalls out. lol She drove it that way for a while until she finally decided she liked the black better.
@muskokamike127
@muskokamike127 9 лет назад
shananagans5 yeah, it was quite common to have your choice on lettering or blackwall (not the mounting of a pair on each side either way lol). This was long before Omni-directional tires and specific tire design for each corner of the car. On a similar note: I worked at a place that had sample sales all the time. What these were were products sent to the company by suppliers hoping we'd carry their products. I went to one and they had 2 of one style of mag wheel and 2 of another. All the same size and the right size for my car. They would retail for about $100 each but at this sale, they were $10.00 each. I was SO tempted to buy the 4 and just put 2 per side thinking "well, you can't see both sides at the same time" lol.....
@shananagans5
@shananagans5 9 лет назад
michael cochrane lol Yea, my mom did that back when there was no structural difference in the inside Vs. outside sidewall so there was no functional issues. It just made her look crazy. With those sample tires I would put matching tires on the front & matching tires on the back. lol Well, I wouldn't do that now but when I was in college I would be thinking about how many pizzas I could buy with the money saved. lol

"Before Fiat started the Fiat Line", he says near 12 minutes. Fiat is much, much older that I believe he thinks (preceding Ferrari by nearly 50 years). The taillights are shared (not exclusive) with the Fiat version of the Dino (also badged 'Dino') spider. Like the 'Ferrari' Dino 206 and 246, the 'Fiat' Dino eventually found some manufacturer badging (the 'Ferrari' Dino became a Ferrari, the 'Fiat' Dino became a Fiat). The wheels were also offered on the 'Fiat' Dino (not exclusive to this Dino (as the owner said). Then again, if you own the car, I suppose you can make up the 'facts'.
