Hi, here is a review of my ultra-light back pack for travel and an occasional scramble. This weighs in at 1 oz and has many features of more technical offerings that results in a robust and great carrying pack.
Nice review! Do you think i would be able to carry a big proper sized tripod on the side? And also if someone really wanted, would a 15" inch laptop fit inside?
If it was me, I would look at a bag that is more suited to the role. For a laptop, it will fit but there is not internal structure nor padding. For the tripod, it all depends on the size and weight of the tripod. I carry a mini (as seen in the b-roll shots), fold out tripod that is 18" no problem but a more standard 24" would stick above the top of the pack if you'r using the side pocket. It depends on your intended use, but the extra size and weight to not only protect your equipment but carry it confidently is a good trade off. Mystery Ranch District 24, Urban assault 21, or 2 day assault might be better options. Big variable is the tripod and if it is inside or striped on the outside.
How would you describe the waterproofness / resistance of this bag for walking around in low/medium rain? Seams aside, is this the type of nylon that is basically waterproof, or does water end up wetting through it?
Pretty much your standard pack cloth treated for water resistance. It will do ok with a short duration rain. The larger flap of the 22 is a big help in this regard. The smaller one doesn’t have this and might be more susceptible. I like light weight nylon dry bays or ziplock bags for important items like first aid, documents or toilet paper. Not really sure how well a pa k cover would work given lack of structure. I’ve bee traveling in Asia using it everyday and I still love the bag. Cheers
