I'm not one to speculate but I did want to address the Mystery Shelby Mustang that was featured on Dennis Collins Coffee Walk video this past week. This car is awesome, but the mystery surrounding it does raise some questions. A few people reached out to me and thought I could contribute to finding the history on this car, and I'm going to give it my best shot. First and foremost, I wanted to do a casual sit-down conversation about this car.
There are a lot of questions here, and there is a lot left to learn about this Chicago based drag car. Dennis and crew are speculating that this is the missing Shelby Mustang #1444. I'm not here to argue Shelby details, but I wanted to touch on a few points that caught my attention. Regardless of its history this cut-up Mustang is wild and crazy and I love it. I'm looking forward to tracking down its history and I'll be sure to report back here, and obviously report to Dennis any of my findings. But for now, let's sit and talk about this very mysterious car.
Is it a legit Shelby? How would you know, since it doesn't have any identification? Did it ever race? What class would it have run in? There are still a lot of things up in the air.

Any proof of your claim that the VIN and Shelby tag are on another Mustang at all? To my knowledge the Shelby serial number they claim the car is has not been found yet.

I think if it was done in the day and has legit factory parts, it's as rare as an unmodified Shelby. People lose sight that these were purpose built race cars.

Hard to judge a car by looking at a video Dennis is the one risking his money and is willing to put it out there for others to help confirm or deny. I can understand Shelby owners not wanting it to be real

I trust Dennis had some prior intel before he pulled a trailer up there and bought the car. Dennis isn’t a noob. I guess it is possible if the car was cheap enough he could gamble, but Dennis is a pretty calculated car buyer.

Yes sir, and he knows Shelbys pretty well. I think he took a gamble based on the cool factor of this car, but he's very smart when it comes to this stuff.

the stated santioning body in the video was IHRA, or AHRA, there were also ADRA sanctioned tracks in the chicago area. this car being a NHRA car was never mentioned. on the roll cage they stated that it was an original Shelby SCCA cage, and Dennis agreed.

Ok, I’ve watched the Coffee Walk video, read the Motor Trend article and have owned a 67 Shelby for over 40 years. Here are some of my thoughts. Agree wholeheartedly about the “FX” stuff, not correct for 69…and yes, no IHRA in 69. According to MT article, SAAC 67 Shelby registrar Dave Mathews inspected car and said it’s a Shelby. If Mathews said Shelby, then I trust it’s a Shelby. Tilt front glass is not molded after Shelby but stock Mustang (grill opening is stock Mustang, and hood and headlight buckets are not extended like Shelby). This is just an aftermarket piece as sold in car magazines. This suggests to me more of an amateur build. Cut off at cowl, floor altered, and steering changed. Maybe was a wreck. Car was missing Shelby fiberglass upper and lower side scoops so guys who cleaned off paint likely added those including that pinned set up on lower side scoops (brake scoops)…NO reason for pins, not like they need to be pulled on and off with any regularity. Plus no pins in MT photos (scoops are absent). These guys may have added. Also looks like these guys stuck Shelby grill and inboard high beams into this grill…doesn’t fit because of stock Mustang shape is different. Guy says wired for lights in upper scoops, OK but then that would be an early, first 200 car not 1444….and then upper scoops would not be original otherwise the lights would be there. Confusing about rollbar IN Collin’s video BUT they suggest bracing extending back as can be seen from hole for lower side scoop, not just to floor and roof. Early cars had additional bracing to fender tubs, so again this would not support this being 1444. This is stuff Mathews would have looked at, snubbers on leaf springs too. So again, IF Mathews says Shelby, then I trust it is a Shelby. So looks to me like a real Shelby but maybe an early car NOT 1444 that was converted to a race car by some hot rodders, maybe from a wreck. Need photos of car actually on track to give it special value , otherwise just a butchered car.

If the shelby expert has anything to gain then of course he would say it is a shelby. fact is that there is no way that anyone is ever going to know for sure.

Dennis mentioned the engine set back. Drag racing allowed a 10 percent and this was much more than that.

Tim, some details I know from my road racing background: The side scoops with hood pins are not factory to my knowledge. They were functional rear brake scoops of course and the hose looked period. Pool noodle type padding didn’t come out till the early 80’s. I don’t remember seeing it till 1983 or so. It deteriorates rapidly, so much so that as you know it’s no longer legal for any legit sanctioning body. Everyone requires SFI or FIA spec padding and have for at least 15 years. My question is why would you leave rear brake ducts on a drag race car when you don’t need brake cooling? The injection was a non-issue for me as again we both know with some work you could buy a ‘69 dated inject system. On the flip side blue plexiglass windows were a 60’s, maybe 70’s thing. I don’t recall seeing that on drag cars we’d see at Mid America Raceway in Wentzville, MO in the 80’s. Didn’t rules outlaw windows that weren’t clear at some point? The SCCA did in the early 80’s as some were using black to limit visibility through their car which was thought at the time to be a safety issue in traffic on track. I know I’m mixing drag and road racing a bit but it seems to apply given these Shelby’s were predominantly road race cars and the brake ducts scream road racing. Good work on this one!

Enjoyed your comments .read about how jack loftus ford was one of the largest shelby dealers . And sold maney that were raced in scca in the mid 60s .whitch supports youe theory. I do rember when working at a dealership in the mid 80s a car was damaged on a test drive .the dealer had to send serial numbers back to factory for insurance to pay .some one could have cut the bad away an bult a drag car out of whats left , the projects got set a side an forgoten I do hope the best for mr collins

@@blazerteam possibly but the pin inside the leading edge of the scoop ruins the airflow substantially. Even in that era mechanics understood basic aerodynamics such as this, or one would think. It’s very odd as the pins are not original, I’ve never seen them before on a GT350 race car..

Interesting video mate. This story reminds me of the Silverstone Jaguar revival story. I am going from memory here, been out of the classic car game for 20 years now, but I think it was the 'D and not the C type'. But essentially Jaguar invited ALL classic Jaguar owners for a free heritage weekend at the track, but if my memory serves me correctly twelve more 'D types' turned up than were actually manufactured! You know how it goes, a car gets wrecked then that front-end becomes separated then 20 years later it gets 'restored' and rolls once again. Because when I heard that the i.d. plate was missing I just assumed someone had saved a wrecked body and plopped it on a Hot Rod! Which let's be honest, we should be grateful for! No disrespect here... Because it is still a Shelby just as technically making two 'D types' out of one is possible, and they are both 'technically' Jaguars. But back in the 90's when I built a few cars, in England, a car required original running-gear to be allowed to keep its original number-plate, but that is an easy fix. Just giving the guy from the garage 24 Heineken solved that problem. I restore medieval armour for a living, and trust me.... EXACTLY the same game is being played in this line of work! The dilemma being... how much of the original do we need to call a piece a classic/an antique? Best wishes from an Englishman in a French forest. ⚒️⚔️🌞

Yes sir, every old drag car has history, it's just a matter of tracking it down. The previous owner of the car did a good job of documenting the Shelby pieces, but my goal is to track down the racing history.

Maybe like you said DC is super experienced on Shelby stuff snd did do a video about identifying then . So maybe he has done some research and maybe knows more than he has let on and we’ll just have to wait and see. First thing I’d be doing is trying to track down part sellers or anyone who knows anything about this car I. The day before I’d buy it. Especially for a premium. So I’m just gonna wait see if my hunch is right.

Much respect, always enjoy watching your videos. Brings back a lot of memories. I use to own a 49 Anglia named Classical gas, running originally a blown 426 hemi, when I owned It had 468 on methanol with a clutch turbo. Had a 38 Fiat Topolino named Saturday night fever, bought it as a roller, ran a 468 turbo 400.and last a 55 Chevy 2 dr hardtop built by blair's speed shop in 1962, called SoCal pile driver. Had a torsion bar tube axle and front frame clip, originally a nailhead, then a 427, and finally a 301 with a 4 spd, with a 56 Pontiac rear. Sure miss that car... Anyway, just wanted to say thank you.

If it was just laqure black primer shot over a car that wasn't preped. You can wipe it off with lagure thinner and a rag. The surface has to be preped for primer to stick. If you go buy rattle can primer. Spray it on your car. You can wipe it off. In the 70s 80s it was common for guys to put a car in primer. " oh I'm gonna have it painted " then after few months of weather and washes. The primer actually leaves. The black thats on that car is not a matt finish or a paint. And as for why would you cut up a Shelby. Hmmmm because in 1969 you could replace that car for about 2500 bucks. I had 66 red on red gt fastback ( the poor man Shelby.) 289 hi po. 4 speed. Single hoop roll bar. My dad bought in 68. At 16 in 1979 I traded it for 70 442 who would have known. Lol. Even in 79 to early 80s we could buy 69 camaro. 70 chevelle for nothing. I have had lots of cars since then. Guys would order muscle cars out of Vietnam. Just as my dad did. Then family. The gas crunch in 76 -77. Had to sell them. And here are bunch of teen agers with no bills and money in our pockets. Lol. From my first car in 79 till my oldest was born in 85 ( my wife actually went into labor at street race. ) went to hospital in 70 chevelle 396 tunnel ram 2 4s. Had just changed from 4 speed to 400 auto. M&h race masters and open headers. ( how would like to be the guy at emergency entrance when that rolled up. Lol ) we could buy bodies out of junk yard for 500 bucks all day long. Sorry. Lol so yea you could cut up real Shelby and not think bout it. We cut up camaros to build all out drag cars never gave it a thought. Lol.

$2500 was a lot of fuckin' money in 1969. Matter of fact if you look up Ford's 1969 price list you'll notice the "base price" for most models was around $2600.

Even if the rattle can paint wiped off, I still don't think that it would've had flawless, amazing patina underneath. Just my opinion though. I've done plenty of paint stripping with various chemicals and materials, and it rarely comes out that clean.

I've spent my whole life in the Chicago area and have been to US 30 countless times from the mid 70's till it was closed down. I was watching street racing in the area since I was 12. If you've experienced this era in Chicago then you know the history of this car will be very shady !!!! That being said, I'm dying to find out the real story behind this car. My money is on that it was stolen and turned into a race car by some shady fellow that got thrown into Jail and the car was hidden away from the authorities. That is why it was rattle can painted black. In Chicago that's what's considered a great history.

If this car was stolen taking the shelby badges off dont mean sh.t this car has numbers all over and you can bet your ass Dennis knew more about this car than was revealed on that tape there are numbers in the original serial number that identifies disignation while on the assembly line if it will be a 6 or 8 plain jane or GT or headed to Carroll shelby if it turns out to be Jim Morrison's long lost shelby ding ding ding ding

It's a real Shelby but , It eas serviced at a dealership and a "porter" took it for a joy ride and yep you guessed it he wercked it !!! The dealer couldn't get another of these cause this was a 1 of 29 , it was a bonnafid Shelby ordered by a guy who worked for a guy who knew Carroll personally in Hawaii (where he worked) he went to SanJose and got it !!! The dealer couldn't get another so he paid the guy for it and turned it into this race car !!! Kool story I heard/saw it on Beer walk #2 of Richard Rollins yrube video !!!

That is why I wrote a comment here and e-mailed you. I know you really love digging up research on classic drag cars and their history and that you just want the story of the car to be told for all to remember and enjoy. Plus with the unique people you meet in the drag racing collective surely someone will know something and then you will piece together the rest. Idk too much about paint on cars but just wondering how do u remove a layer of paint without ruining the paint underneath it?? And able to take top layer off and still have a nice patina and original paint still on the car? Did they just paint over original paint back in the days without prepping or sanding the old paint?

If you used enamel reducer to wipe off the flat black I am not sure if it would affect the whit lacquer underneath????

I only watched Dennis video once, and may be wrong. It sounded to me like the door jams had the stripes. I believe the striping was added back. I wouldn't doubt that the patina could look fake by sanding the black off to get back to the white. That would all the edges and thin spots perfectly to make it appear too perfect.

The red flag to me was the seller, he sure was jacked up & was talking a lot & really trying to sell the car. I don't know if he was really trying to convince himself more about the car or to Dennis. He was real smooth talking used car salesman. "A good negotiation is when both sides feel like they got screwed". 🤣

I know Shelby’s had the vin tag in front of the shock tower drivers side, with all that gone I understand vin would be gone, they said transmission was from a Shelby 3 numbers from this build date, why hasn’t anyone contacted that car owner and see which tranny he’s got ? When I did the research on my car , all the paperwork from the state of Missouri said title only for the 3 owners of mine , it was always a drag car , in 15 years it amassed 10,972 miles as shown by the state on title transfer, passenger side floor was perfect except for fire extinguisher and bracket, drivers side had 20 different holes drilled to move fiberglass seat around, factory hole for 4 speed was butchered up( still there ) and a clutch hydro transmission was in stalled and raced, with second owner his wife ended up with the car under powder puff racing at MAR raceway in the early 70’s all women class, Car Colors mine was red from factory made it 2 years then blue next year black next year yellow stayed yellow for 7 years , car was gutted changed to stock driveline and sold 4 months later motor thru a rod and I bought it owned it almost 40 years purchased original motor and rear end 4 speed was gone so I bought same casting and date coded ( months early ) , Sorry back to the mustang, Shelby says if you have paperwork they’ll print a new vin, without title or paperwork showing original vin on it when it was transformed into race car they’ll never get anything from Shelby, I agree with you at one time was probably a Shelby that was wrecked in 67 or 68 and that’s why it was bought and changed into a race car in 1969, at insurance yards you just got bills of sale and titles went to the state to be destroyed, if the car was rebuilt factory specs state wouldn’t release original title and vin they would issue a state vin beginning in ILL and then sequence numbers the year wouldn’t be 1967 anymore it would be the date car was rebuilt, In Missouri if you rebuilt a 1957 Chevy with no title this year and took it with a highway patrol office they inspect it and issue title application it will say 2022 rebuilt salvage car not 1957, hope it helps on some laws about rebuilt salvage cars

I really appreciate you doing this video. I have alot of respect for Dennis Collins and his team. If I'm right about Dennis, he will welcome the truth as well. I was amazed to see this car on his channel. I have no idea whether it's real or not. The one thing I do believe is that someone, somewhere has pictures of it racing if it's real. Someone would have been proud of it I believe. But again, I have no idea. I hope guys like you and Dennis keep saving these cars regardless of whether they are priceless or not. That car has history regardless. As always great job!!!

I don't know what kind of paint the black was but if it's rattle can it is easily removed with lacquer thinner and a rag, at least the modern stuff is. I've bought several 3-wheelers that had spray paint on the plastic which almost serves as a preservative leaving behind some nice shiny plastic rather than the flakey white stuff that's just been left in the sun to dry out and age.

The only reason I could think of as to why those rear brake scoops were pinned on is for a quick, convenient way to show skeptics that the rear Shelby added brake ducts are present and correct, but of course they can be faked too, just like patina .

I had a `68 Shelby many years ago... the roll bar padding wasn't like that thick, soft foam tube stuff you buy in the big box stores. To the best of my memory, it was thinner and much stiffer; also it seemed to be molded on like they dipped the whole hoop in hot plastic.

It's quite possible that it's a real Shelby. They weren't worth much in '68/'69, I remember seeing an ad from a southern Ford/Shelby dealer from '68 that had a picture of a bunch of new '67s on a dirt lot that they were selling for barely more than a regular '68 Mustang. This car has a standard looking Mustang front end on it, fiberglass so that makes sense, but the Shelbys had deeper headlight buckets and header panel, and different hood and grill opening. As it appears to have had the remaining rear Shelby parts removed for quite some time, it just looked like a standard '67 Mustang fastback, and that may have camouflaged it from the collector crowd. The springs, scoop hardware, and other Shelby bits could have been added at any time over the last 55 years, so without any numbers, it could be almost anything; even a T code six cylinder car.

They said on the video they buffed the black paint off and applied the blue stripes themselves. That's why they were trying to show dennis the doorjams where they thought evidence of original stripes were present. But I could't see it in the video.

In 67/68 there were some FXers still running exhibition on smaller tracks. Also, some of the bigger names that switched to plastic floppers still took their older FXers with them in tow. I have a pic of the 68 mini charger sitting in the shop at Grand Spaulding Dodge, right behind it is the 65 A/FX dodge wearing new paint. That being said, almost everything was plastic floppers come 68/69.

I have my own ideas on the car but I'm really looking forward to seeing what you find. Growing up around 60s and 70s cars in the 80s with a family that dealt in these cars I've seen it all and there are a lot of red flags for me. EDIT - The 32min mark talking about the taillight panel is what really piqued my interest. If you're going through the trouble of turning a Shelby into a drag car why change the most recognizable part of the car?

When I watched Dennis's video and you were the first guy I thought of for any history on this Mustang. Is it possible also it may have been a test car, crusher car not ever to be on the road. A buddy's Grandparents had two shelby drag cars in around 68 - 69. Cal Automotive you probably heard of and raced at Lions. Not this car for one of them. From pictures there's sat higher. Can't wait to see what you find on it. Great channel!!

In the 60’s we had a drag strip in Kansas City, Missouri called KCIR (Kansas City International Raceway). It was an AHRA (American Hotrod Association) sanctioned track. I know their classes were somewhat different than NHRA.

I will say that I bought a 1966 VW bug that was single stage yellow. I was able to use some brake parts cleaner and wipe the yellow off and it was patina gulf blue underneath. I left it and drove it that way.

Great video and mentioning US30 as being an AHRA track; I soent quite a lot of time there as a youngster in the 70s and 80s; I'm still a region rat and you can still drive down the old track. We definitely had some really weird creations run down 30 😅 I never saw that car there but then again I probably don't remember 3/4s of what ran there.

I should have thought that car looked more like a gasser class car than any type of an FX class , I was at US30 almost every sunday from 69 to 75 my dad had a 69 road runner he bought new and raced most every sunday and some Wednesday nights and I don't remember seeing that car out there ever but that doesn't mean it wasn't, but it's still a pretty cool car and i whould like to see it finished and running to see what kind of times it can turn.

Tommy, I bought a '71 Honda Z50 that had been spray bombed blue. My intent was to strip it and repaint it like the factory. I removed the tank badges and was surprised to see the factory paint under the spray bomb blue. I LOVE patina and originality. So, having heard of midyear Corvette owners stripping an entire car with a razor blade (I know you own one, and I have owned two) I started the same with my little Honda. The spray paint was easy to flake and peel off with the razor blade. Then a couple of coats of primer that I removed very carefully with lacquer thinner. Then, factory original paint!!! They didn't strip it or sand it. Just primed and spray bombed blue over the factory paint. I was able to polish and wind up with a survivor quality Z50. I have pics of the process on my FB page. So, I think it is legit to carefully remove any topcoat and find decent paint sometimes. Now, does all Chev. or GM have the VIN # stamped on the frames? I know the Corvettes do. Is that the same for Fords? Was there a hidden stamped VIN on the frame for them?

There is a shot when they show the black paint scraped off where you can see the bottom rocker line of the car was blue, with white on top. Motortrend had short story on car in Sept of 2019. They mention car was repainted to get that blue on bottom. Car has white paint there now.

Love your vedios . Great to hear from people from home area. Sat night was always at brainerd optimist drag strip .earlier 80 s. The shelby's history might be linked to scca type racing in Chicago area in the mid 60s especially, when one of people in the first vedio said he thought car might have ben wrecked. I think I rember this type of car ran at Talladega, in 69 and 70 on the road course. This type of racing was real popular in the north. Some one might of tried to swap it over to drag racing especially with the ductwork and that particular roll cage..

The patina is a interesting question. I don’t think Dennis would have gotten so caught up in the moment that he couldn’t see that being faked. He has played the big money game for too many years too be fooled by that. The brake air ducts are also interesting. I personally wouldn’t go to the effort of installing the duct work on a clone drag car. Why would a guy buy a road race built car and cut it up to drag race it seems to be the real question. The wreck/ stolen idea fits a missing VIN so go ahead and cut it up. If the front was smashed in a wreck it would make sense. This is a super cool mystery car that the story is probably so simple that we will all laugh if it gets figured out.

I think the stolen car gets the nod . And.... it stayed local to the area it was stolen . Once the car had to leave the back yard /alley shop to get other mods or turning that Holborn " laguna lean- out " injection the car would be visible to people that were looking for their stolen Shelby. Rattle can black from back in the day could be removed with " easy off " oven cleaner . Hell...... I don't know.....but, come on, Chicago !!!! Dig deep enough and you might find Jimmy Hoffa 😉

Yeah, that patina was the first thing that I noticed being too perfect, As a paint guy at a shop here in England I get asked to do this all the time... It's just too perfect for having "wiped the paint off"... now I'm reading everywhere that they are saying this is the missing #1444 not seen since 67 and it had a flip front from Ron Pellegrini.... The story is just too perfect to be true...

Fords of that era were painted with single stage enamel paint. You could lightly scuff the original paint, spray it with black lacquer paint or primer, lightly sand or buff it off , and leave the original paint mostly intact. Not saying that is what happened, but it is possible. My money is on it being wrecked or stolen like you said.

Exactly that paint could sit in the cow pasture 15 or 20 years and buff out like new and you had to use red compound you touch a new car with red and it will take it to the metal

I bought a car the was spray painted or cheaply painted flat black one time . We used acetone , Terry cloth hand towels , and a lot of rubbing and got all the black paint off . Factory paint buffed to a nice shine

I’ll have to watch the Dennis Collins video first, but something just doesn’t ring true. How did that patina show up after the flat black paint was removed ? I’m 78 years old and have been around drag racing since the late 50’s, but I don’t even remember the AHRA even having any sort of FX class. I believe some of the outlaw eastern tracks may have had what they called as Ultra FX in the mid to late 60’s. I like your thinking that the car was either wrecked…or was stolen, and made into a drag car.

He did laps and if he did decide to i would think he would make something special for that type of racing like he did with everything he did ya know......I think someone made it to look like a Shellby cause they made sure to put GT350 on the 1 piece front shellby wouldnt do that...... N how the hell did they get that black off soooo good I've never been that lucky on any paint removal job.

Anyway you look at it, real or fake ,it is a really cool car. Dennis is real knowledgeable guy when it comes to business . By the time the smoke clears, the car is doing what it's supposed to do......get views on RU-vid. The car will virtually pay for itself, most likely 2 or 3 x over. In my opinion I like the car for what it is. It should be put back in some sort of running and driving machine. Leave it looking just as it is . It's a great conversation piece and would be a blast just cruising it around and sending down the track every now and again. I did recommend on his channel to reach out to this channel for help to decode it secret past history. If anyone can figure out some info it , it's right here!

Back in 72 ,my neighbor wrecked his 68 shelby bad rollover. He put the motor & trans in his 66 ford P-U his work truck. The Shelby sat behind his garage for years. His son used to sneak the truck out on Saturday nights when his parents were passed out. The Shelby was just gone one day. Back then it was just another old carin an overgrown backyard. Everybody had older muscle cars. My mom had a 65 2+2 ,dad had a 64 327, 4spd Vette, I had a orange sting ray, 5spd, a slick, and a 3 foot sissy bar!!!

If i remeber correctly the people Dennis bought it from said they found remnants of stripes in the door jam ...then they went and put new rocker stripes on it, they didnt find those stripes under the paint

That is correct. You could see just the tips of the original stripes in the door jams, but the stripes were replaced. I can't wait to see where this mystery goes.

I'm skeptical here! 1. the paint, how is it the aftermarket doors and front clip are the same color and patina as the back original shell? 2.the firewall looks super fresh so does the roll bar as you can see clean metal between the foam gaps. 3. fresh blue small block with period NOS parts 4. super cool wheels and tires added "just because" 5. is it my eyes or does the picture of the black car with a spot cleared look like more bare metal than Wimbledon White. Probably better to pursue what Shelby it actually was than what local drag strip this one possibly speed down most likely as a homegrown back more likely in the 70s/80's . IMO it's a real Shelby body with a lot of cool "add-on's" and "wouldn't it be cool if's" I'm not really thinking the seller is trying to fool the buyer, but both parties wishing it was something the current state of the car should/could be. Do I love this car YES! would I pay top dollar for this car NO! Do I hope some "Legit" information comes out proving me completely wrong in my thinking YES!YES!YES!

My thoughts as of this moment are that some of this car may be a Shelby, probably from a wreck or theft. You are right, alot does not add up, lots of mystery on this one. My thoughts after watching the original video, what if it was either wrecked when new or stolen for the reason of no VIN. No VIN or title but they do think it was a certain # in the Shelby registry. All of the date coded parts do fall in line with the suspected build #.

The missing VIN is due to the entire front of the car being cut off and rebuilt with the straight front axle, flip front end, etc. Typical race car stuff, but not typical for a Shelby to undergo this type of build.

Just came back from watching Dennis's video to make the same comment I made on his channel. Between 1965-75 I probably went to US-30 a hundred times and this car is not remembered by me, not saying it never raced there but it wasn't a regular.

There was a statement from Coffee walk on a few of your statement The guys that first went to get the car stated there various big blocks and they actually had to get the parts out of the dumpster to assemble even the hillborn injectors. The car was pressure washed and the paint came off, the padding was put on at thier shop to protect them from crashes, you might want to go back and listen to podcast again

@@HotRodHoarder & @Tommy Cook - all good stuff! I think it’s great to combine your interest & knowledge in this era of drag racing with Dennis’s interest & knowledge in early Shelby Mustangs. I can understand everyone’s difficulty in adjusting to difference between the valuing of all aspects of these cars then and now. Dennis may have a funny laugh, but he is a class act. Dennis will usually reveal his greater knowledge to a seller when examining a car, but I didn’t think Dennis believed it was Shelby #1444, even tho’ he said so. You can’t win them all and Dennis isn’t going to cry about having possibly ‘missed’ this same car @ $8500 at first. Dennis seemed to me to know (or sense) even more about this car than he was letting on to the sellers. I like that Dennis seems to be challenging himself more at this stage of his business & career - and the risks (and rewards) that come along with this approach...

wouldnt worry about the roll cage padding. I put cheap padding on mine after I bashed my head a few times through the build. it will get the correct stuff when it goes racing.

Love your channel and wanted to throw in my observations for discussion. I got a list but here are my top two. First is the fact that the tilt front end that would have been added during the race car construction matches the car so perfect in the video that it appears that it left the factory with it. I mean the patina, {in the video} matches too perfect for me. Second is a comment by the bearded guy who owned the car and sold it to Dennis. he pointed out early in the video the absence of rubber debris in the rear fenderwells as proof that the car was never raced or possibly never finished thereby eliminating the possibility of locating race history. Kinda covering his butt if you asked me. If never raced or finished then why the class and dragstrip stickers but no car number. they claimed this was replicated from the original lexan windshield but the original was not shown. I got a question on this, isn't 69 a little early for lexan that followed plexxiglass and also wasn't the factory altered cars required to have a glass windshield. strange that if they were keeping the car as close to "as found condition" that the guy changed the windshield and used glass instead of lexan

For sure, lots of mixed signals on this one. They changed an awful lot of stuff, and I just don't know what's original to the car and what's been added. Either way, it's a cool looking car and I hope to find some history on it.
