Leyland always acquitted themselves well at the Long Sutton ploughing trials, the secret was Ballasting the tractor correctly , old photos show heavy front chassis weights, inner front wheel weights as well as water ballasted rear wheel weights. Having said that they suffered with poor brakes but the 4.98 engine was brilliant.
My dad remembers these coming out and a neighbouring farmer bought one brand new, and every time he drove past our place he would slow down and show it off with a big cheeky grin, because my dad's farm was still all Nuffields. Glad to hear this yoke is goin for a great cause, love to see it.
I agree with you on the 272 pulling power/grip thing. Contractor for my Father bought a new Leyland 272 (1977). It easily pulled the 4 furrow 14" conventional plough on slopped land. Despite a full set of weights the front wheels were 4 foot up in the air ploughing up the slope bits but still pulled away like a train ! Great machine in its day.
Lovely. In the late seventies i hauled silage and spread muck with 384's / 270's . They certainly pulled well .As others have mentioned the brakes could be troublesome. There high road speed made them ideal for haulage.
they were a great tractor! grew up driving a 255. would happily plod a long with a round silage bale on the front loader and one on the rear! steering was the main issue there :D

Great what you are doing for the dogs home, I’ve had collies for a long time the last one went blind but it never stopped him getting about the estate i work on, and I never thought of giving him up. Keep up the good work cheers 👍🚜
What a great thing you are doing. Love the old laylands and marshels. My dad used to drive for a haulage company in North Yorkshire called J D Ireland . They had a Leyland/ Marshall dealer ship on the same site as the wagons. I remember going to work with my dad in a morning and if we arriving back at the yard early enough he used to let me sit I tractors. So this video brings some amazing memories. Keep up the good work.

I heard from a farmer his Leyland has a great turning radius for its size and power. You don't see many in Canada, but they are around if you look for them. To be brought across the pond must mean that some farmers thought a lot of them.
It's actually a mud-out, not a muddo. Similar, but more polite than a rake out or rod out. Polite enough to use at tea with the vicar. For example, it's perfectly acceptable to exclaim "Jeez Vic, I've over-done the tea and biscuits something cruel and must hurry off for a right good mud-out before choir practice this evening"
I am really enjoying your videos here in America. Having grown up on a farm the connection to the tractors and crawlers is strong, even if many of your tractors are different than the ones I have experience. The first tractor, or anything I ever drove was my Grand Dads 1940 DC Case, when I was 6. My brothers widow still owns that tractor. It has been almost all Case this family ever since that first tractor. Your charity also hits close to home as we had Border Collie dogs for generations on the farm.. I still get chills thinking of my Grand Dads last one. Lady lay on his front porch when he went to the hospital and wouldn't get up. She stopped eating and wouldn't move for days. When he passed away the funeral procession had to drive past Grand Dads house on the way to the cemetery. When the procession crested the hill on the highway above his house Lady had gotten up and was standing right on the edge of the highway. I watched her stand there as the procession passed then she turned around and walked back to the house. I wish your charity well and would love to send something to benefit it.

Nice vid great to see such a kind hearted gesture for the dogs home good on you We had the same problem with a old Massey 185 the engine cracked the block and we got a replacement engine out of an insurance claim for a excessive oil usage 4 pints of oil a day on a loader tractor the old guy let it idle all the time to save fuel and glazed the bores We put it in the 185 straight on the mower conditioner for 3 days went from 4 pints of oil to near nothing boy did it stink of burnt oil for the first day or so it was running out of the exhaust but cured it
Funny how I knew there was a fresh episode and it didn’t come up in my notifications so I typed you in and hey presto! Great news and I had a thought about my childhood and how my life was all about BRITIANS TOY TRACTORS and boy I had a collection!!
I have always thought that the Leyland engines were underrated, Leyland made some of the best engines in the world but as is the norm people judge equipment and vehicles by therire arses so the likes of Volvo and DAF etc won out, I chose those two because at the time they started to gain favor over Leyland trucks Leyland made the engines for them or at least the blocks.
Took a rescue collie for walk.Got to safe place and let him off his lead.Off he trotts,i called him,nothing,i ran after him(lol)no chance.Then spent half an hour driving round trying to find him(stopping asking people ect ect)and getting very worried.Eventualy went back and found him in his wendy house.I have never been so releived in my life.It turned out he was deaf,and i mean stone deaf.Cheers mate. thumbs up.

Well done with your purchase we had a 272 synchro it was a great tractor pulled and gripped really well. Our only issue was the brakes used to play up when we left it unused for a while. New master cylinders sorted that problem apparently it’s a common fault. I know you’ll probably check it before it leaves your workshop 😊. Looking forward to seeing your progress. Good luck 🤞

Wow, that was a terrific trip down memory lane , had a friend many years back who was leyland mad, had quite a few & those experiences had set my mind thinking about your mystery tractor 🚜. Had an idea it was an explorer cab , but was surprised it would be a 602 model, not come across that until now , for some reason don’t know why really but I love leyland stuff, lorries, vans , the god dam stuff seemed to never die, just the body work around it rotted away ????? Perhaps it’s that it’s easy engineering , reliable if maintenance is done & no technology interfering !!!!A wonderful thing you are doing for the collie dog charity & now going straight to buy my t-shirt to help support your channel, Thankyou for what you do for the viewer !👍👍👍👍👍👍

I had a Nufield with BMC motor ,,, I used it for putting boat in water brakes frose so had ta be careful where ya were how much room ta stop was a RIPPA CHEERS
Highly underrated when I was farming neighbour had a one best silage tractor he'd had ...he said on subject of grip father had its great relative a nuffield and it was brilliant on hill farm etc ....atb dave

Leyland i would suspect was the follow on from the Nuffield, is that the old 4/98NV that was also used in the Leyland FG & Terrier, nice kind gesture for the Collie rescue centre
