Warehousing people in depressing concrete cells where they have to constantly fear for their safety DOESN’T improve society, and tends to lead to recidivism? Crazy, right?!

Legalize drugs and the mass jailing issue magically goes away.
@MasterOfBaiter
@MasterOfBaiter 3 года назад
The reason why mass incarceration is a thing is because privatised prisons are insentived to keep in as many people as possible cause that's how they get paid by the state. They deny or make paroles harder just to keep the state paying. If we take away drugs then they will pull that shit with people who go to jail for theft and shit. The only way to end is to reprivatise that bs
@savannarbananar
@savannarbananar 3 года назад
@@MasterOfBaiter Yeah, while I think ending the drug war will definitely help cut down on mass incarceration, I wouldn’t say it would make it “magically go away” either. The private prison industry would just find a new group of people to victimize and exponentially ramp up the number of people going to prison for other minor crimes as well as the length of the sentences they get. They’ll probably do it with minor theft, like you said, or turn speeding tickets or other traffic violations from a minor civil issue to a criminal one, or crack down even harder on prostitution and other “degenerate” stuff like that. Or all of the above! But we definitely need to do something about the underlying mass incarceration issue that we have and the punitive mindset that a lot of Americans hold if we want to _actually_ solve this issue.

Another thing to look into is probation and parole, contributing to the recidivism problem. I do not believe there should be a punishment enforcement for probation violations. If someone doesn't want to use the court system to assist with reintegration, then let them be. There should be no reason to send someone back to jail for merely not complying with probation. Not submitting reports or not reporting a move within 72 hours. Also, it is quite the work around for the double jeopardy clause. And I know this aren't common reasons for revoking probation, I can assure they do occur. Simple arrests that result in fines suddenly become ground to send back to prison because of a violation of a court order.
@nickthompson1812
@nickthompson1812 2 года назад
If they don’t want to reintegrate, we should just allow them to run around society? If you can’t not commit a crime for the few years of probation, then no way can you be trusted to not commit a crime while not on probation.
@jefecristo6867
@jefecristo6867 2 года назад
@@nickthompson1812 the point is, if they commit a crime, the state and local officials will decide if it is prosecutable. Secondly, I wasn't referring to be crime violations. I was referring to administrative violations. It's a waste of resources that can be better suited to those who actually want it, and will actually benefit from it. But adding additional prison time for actions otherwise deferred or probated is pointless, and a waste of resources.

Her anecdotal picture of prisons is way off. Perhaps she should stop watching 60 days in? There's zero data and full on opinion. Rectally sourced statistics. I've worked in more than one prison. It's nothing like she says, although she has a couple good points but for the wrong reasons. For instance, the women helping others with legal paperwork. That's not "resistance " lol...but it IS a problem making sure inmates get the legal help they need in a timely manner, and they do help each other. Two separate things. It's not like prison and reentry staff are oblivious...they know the issues and there has been a huge shift in my state over the past 5 years to focus heavy on reentry. New family centered alternative sentencing programs, early employment, etc. Also, she makes it sounds like prisons here can't visit family or get education or training...we have all of that in my state. What is her source? It's like she is trying wayyyyy too hard to make it sound like something horrific. I am disappointed at the sad, weak attempt at sensationalism in regards to prison conditions. It's laughable tbh.

Also, how about looking at relieving huge financial burdens justice involved folks have immediately upon release? That one is a HUGE barrier to successful reentry.

Thank god an actual story about public policy rather than feuding with other YT channels. Having said that a reporter is not the best resource to look at this issue. This is why we have doctoral degrees criminology. She is interpreting actual scholarship from people with actual credentials. We have no idea if she understands what she is writing about. I’m sorry but the most well intended person on earth is not a medical professional and a journalism background does not make you an authoritative source in the field. There is no shortage of actual research on this topic. We call this authoritative opinion vs what she is offering.
@bccsivxx-xxivvii
@bccsivxx-xxivvii 3 года назад
It's called research and investigative journalism. She's referencing the research. You don't know what she knows from just this video. But we can apply logic and common sense to the information she's reporting. I'm willing to bet she's entirely more educated than you on the subject. Besides, a degree doesn't necessarily mean shit nowadays, especially if they're not experienced with the issues in practical form and real world situations.

@@bccsivxx-xxivvii I know that she has no credentials in any related field of study. This is why we teach high school kids the difference between primary vs secondary sources. Why would anyone assume that she has any understanding of the issues related to the topic? This is why criminal justice students don’t get assigned works from journalists. I hold a doctorate in Political Science with a focus on issues of criminal justice. On what planet does she have any real world experience? Hint she has none! Her book is her interpretation of actual research from people in the field. So much for your nonsense claim that credentials don’t matter. Remember this lesson in epistemology.
