Today I read a comment by our fellow-believer Joe Monaco concerning whether or not the dead exist in any way whatsoever. Joe's comments are extremely civil and thoughtful. I will apologize in advance if I misinterpret Joe's words here. I am thankful for this post in that it will catapult us into a valuable discussion about body, soul, spirit, and resurrection vs. re-creation.

Right on, brother! You affirmed what I already believed, which is a wonderful thing. For me the bottom line is what Jesus said in Matthew 19:26….”… yet with God all is possible.” There are just so many areas where we are taught to trust in the One Who made everything in the first place!

Martin, What a strange day this. There I was last night thinking of fading away. No place for me, you see. A madman, lost in thought. Only to hear those intimate thoughts echoed - "Energy..." Oh, my... these lashes in my body. It's difficult for an encourager to be encouraged. The references piled high atop the shoulders. Equipped for any observation. Yet, withheld from it. Encouragement - a horizon. Isolated. Troubled. Of many sorrows. Always "on to something"... Always "too much"... Never time for the encourager. Never time. Detached, R.L. Clark

This is the kind of conversation that made me run like a madman out of christendom years ago. At best it's just conjecture, the piling of ignorance. cause no one knows. And I expect we'll all be surprised when we're "changed in the twinkling of an eye". One would think that Lazurus and Jairus' daughter would have co-authored a book, or at least conducted some weekend seminars entitled "we came back and so can you, in three easy steps". I love to have my ears tickled as much as anyone, and my thirst for knowledge is maybe the greatest of my human desires, but the answer to this quandary in no way changes anyone's life, nor gives us comfort or helps me pay my neighbor's electric bill. Oh how I long to hear Paul, for 18 months, know nothing but Christ and Him crucified. I love you Martin, I don't mean to be a stick in the mud nor negative. Just sayin'
@zendermeister
@zendermeister 17 часов назад
Hello. Are you intimating that Paul never taught on death? That establishing death to be the absence of life (in a world that insists the opposite) is a wasted conversation? There is no quandary. The dead do not exist. I was answering someone who thinks that the dead DO exist, which is a treacherous teaching. I am a preventer of quandaries. You say the answer to this "quandary" changes no one's life? How can you say that when a knowledge of what death is BELONGS INTRINSICALLY to the evangel (Paul's evangel) that gives us eonian life. You say you would rather spend 18 months talking about "Christ and Him crucified," but you must be aware that the crucifixion of Christ entails His death, yes? Perhaps no.

God gives us the definition of life in His creation of Adam. God formed the body out of the ground. It existed, Adam did not. God had spirit in Heaven with Him, that He was going to put into that body. The spirit existed, Adam did not. When God put that spirit into Adam, he became a living soul. He had life, he existed. Death is the return to the "state" we were in before the union of body and spirit...non-existence. Martin, I love the analogy you gave on the Zender Sheridan show of the color filters. I really helped me understand the body-spirit-soul relationship. You have a yellow color filter (the body in your analogy) and you have a blue color filter (the spirit). When you combine the filters, you get green (life, a living being, the beginning of consciousness). Remove either of the filters and life ceases. Where did the green go? It didn't _GO_ anywhere, it simply ceased to exist. This analogy was central to my understanding of death. I hope it helps someone else, as it helped me.
@zendermeister
@zendermeister День назад
Wow, this is a really spectacular post, Greg. I like how you broke down the creation of Adam, stating in each case (of the body and the spirit) that ADAM did not exist until the spirit met the body. And thank you for reminding me of that filter analogy. That's a good one because, truly, the green doesn't exist BEFORE the crossing of the filters, and it doesn't exist after.What a post.

Martin, excellent show with solid truths and plenty to think about. Your video sparked some thoughts. As I read Paul's divinely inspired discussion on resurrection in 1 Corinthians 15, what strikes me is his radical departure from the notion of the resurrection as the reconstitution of the material body (1 Cor 15:36-38, 42-45, CLNT): 36 Imprudent one! What you are sowing is not being vivified if it should not be dying. 37 And, what you are sowing, you are not sowing the body which shall come to be, but a naked kernel, perchance of wheat or some of the rest. 38 Yet God is giving it a body according as He wills, and to each of the seeds its own body. 42 Thus also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is roused in incorruption.
43 It is sown in dishonor; it is roused in glory. It is sown in infirmity; it is roused in power.
44 It is sown a soulish body; it is roused a spiritual body.
45 If there is a soulish body, there is a spiritual also. Thus it is written also, The first man, Adam, "became a living soul:" the last Adam a vivifying Spirit. In Paul’s reasoning, God gives a person the body as He wills, so there is no necessity for Him to find and reconstitute particles of matter, for He knows all things (1 John 3:20) The utter newness of God’s new creation clashes with the human mode of naturalistic, empirical thinking that insists on the continuity of matter. As you said, God's initial creation shows His power to bring into existence what did not exist previously. Therefore God can grant entirely new bodies at the resurrection, whenever that occurs. Another point along this line is what Paul says concerning the Snatching Away in 1 Cor 15:50 (CLNT): "Now this I am averring, brethren, that flesh and blood is not able to enjoy an allotment in the kingdom of God, neither is corruption enjoying the allotment of incorruption." Extrapolating from the truth in this scripture about the lack of flesh and blood, I believe that all human beings will become immortal by means of God’s power of new creation, not by means of constituting a physical body. Said differently, no human will have any vestige of flesh and blood when God becomes all in all (1 Cor 15:28). Finally, in regard to a person's spirit, the point you made in about the spirit of the girl returning to her in Luke 8:55 can be strengthened by the fact that both Jesus and Stephen spoke of "my spirit" (Luke 23:46; Acts 7:59). In addition, Paul also refers to "my spirit" a number of times (Rom 1:9; 1 Cor 5:4; 14:14; 16:18; 2 Cor 2:13).

In point of fact Martin, our current living bodies are continuously renewing themselves, taking bits and bobs of the things we eat and replacing old, worn out cells so really our current physical bodies, are not even the same bits of soil we started out life with. So to my mind our physical bodies are irrelevant to our future, resurrected selves. I like to think rather that our "selves" are stored in God's remembrance and His love for us as individuals and that there is no need at all for any physical part of our current being for Him to resurrect us at our appointed time.

We are grappling here with concepts and realities that we only know by faith, and a certain amount of speculation. It is faith that holds these ideas and realities together. Soul, body, essence, mind, birth, death, rebirth, resurrection, new creation and I suppose a whole lot more valid concepts. How can we know which concepts and conclusions are analogous thoughts, explanations, examples or whatever we cannot even articulate. I think of how Paul felt when he wrote, “Behold, I tell you a mysterion”. This was, to me, a very good discussion of these matters. When we are resurrected and become alive again, I am sure we will be taken up in the enjoyment of our new bodies and capabilities such that we may not even think about the finite speculations with which we now struggle. Now, ain’t that a rip!!!!!

Good Morning Martin. Debra McCullough here. Is it possible that the immortal bodies we receive are new bodies with our Spirit from God giving it life? Paul tells us that corruptible must put on incorruptible. This sounds like a new body to me. Our mortal bodies are death and corruptible. That is an enemy that must be abolished? Just some thoughts that popped in my head while listening to you.
@GregUniRec
@GregUniRec День назад
Debra, I believe this is exactly what happens. God doesn't need any part of our old body to bring us back. He created our current body, exactly as He wanted it, from a single cell. He can do that again. Besides, I don't want any part of this sinful, corruptible, dying body connected to my new body. 🙂

My understanding of Scripture is that the soul of the dead is in Hades, the "unseen." Probably the only way/best way God could explain this to our feeble human minds. Will we in the BOC have our soul restored at the resurrection/snatching away? Will we need it? I would think we would so we could identify ourselves and others. Certainly those entering the Kingdom on Earth will have them.

I’ve been wondering for some time now, prior to God reinserting our individual Spirits into a new immortal body, are our Spirits able to do anything, or are they just sitting on God’s Shelf of Spirits, inert and inactive?
@caroleevandyk5544
@caroleevandyk5544 День назад
Well, if, as the Old Testament scriptures say, the dead know nothing and there is no activity accomplished by the personality in death, then there is no awareness or consciousness in the death state and the personality of the individual is kept intact in the mind of God, but in an unaware or oblivious state. As Martin said, that which makes us who we are, like the data in a hard drive, is stored in the mind of God, ready to be downloaded into our new immortal bodies which will return us to a conscious state. I know it’s weird to contemplate that our personalities can exist without us being conscious and self-aware, but in God’s mind, this is obviously not a problem. I know my puny mind will never understand how God does this but l don’t have to know.

@@caroleevandyk5544How can we know a person’s spirit is in an “unaware and oblivious state”? I agree that the soul is in such a state when the body dies, but I haven’t seen anything in scripture describing the spirit in the same way; It returns to God who gave it, but where does scripture state that it is either inert or inactive?

There wasn't much mention of the soul here. The body without the spirit is dead we know. There are definitely 3 parts to our existence, and I believe the soul is in the body like Bullinger does.
