Join me in this video where I continue work on my new exhibition layout 'The Cruel Sea'.
This time I'll be considering the positioning of the dockyard buildings and generally moaning about the number of windows I've had to create on this layout!!!

Hi Jason - Fantastic build and I do like the the film "The Cruel Sea" myself (seen it at least a dozen times). Having spent 24.5 years in the Royal Navy myself, may I suggest in the area to the right of the water tank you make a mast as every naval establishment has one of these for the raising and lowering of the Ensign at the start of day and sunset. It would really show it off as a naval base. I also like the idea that this is a tribute to your late father. The smallest ship I served on was a Cruiser (C99 HMS Blake - last two years before decommissioning). You are making your dad proud. As they say in the navy "Carry on".

Thank you. Yes the mast was on my list of possibilities so thank you for the suggestion. I envisaged a ceremonial area in front of the middle building on the right hand side. Thank you for watching. Regards. Jason

Really coming along. Great work. I have read the book "The Cruel Sea" but it has been very difficult to get the movie in the U.S. Mainly because of the different video formats between the U.S. and the U.K. Cheers!

I might be wrong but I’m sure I have watched the full film on You Tube and fairly recently at that…….🤔

Outstanding....I have been looking for another Modeler who is incorporating a dockward with Airfield and trains, something I am attempting to do myself

Yes Difficult and odd problem HMS Crocus during the Second world war would have been painted in a camouflage pattern, But when in the film she was back to post war paint and budget etc. she was not portrait in her Camouflage pattern (this happened in many post war films)

I would move the crane as close to the water as possible and don't forget the rope posts for the ships, looking nice, the buildings are great, I like the spines on the roofs, that's something I'm going to do when I can, next time I make a building.

As an aspiring Rivet Counter with tounge firmly placed in cheek, I can immediately spot the glaring error.. The main gun on the Compass Rose is on a mount, and not on lumps of wood!. 😂 In all seriousness, I love the layout on the bui, it looks believable, in fact I'm pausing to take motes on the buildings for my dockyard.

Fantastic work. Could you increase the height of the rear buildings with more AA batteries or, and I'm not sure if this is correct, barrage balloons that were raised and lowered. Cheers Stu ,

Thanks Stu, There were a couple of towers on the skyline at Devonport so I think I'm going to try and work them into the corners at each side. If I can find some more Oerlikons I may well put them on the roof. Thank you for the suggestion. Cheers. Jason

Could the track exit (back, right), just be a glimpse of dockyard wall, with main gate(s), guardpost (sand bagged?) and perhaps a separate 'pedestrian' entrance?

I've now solved the problem Steve. I like the main gate idea and I've used them on the left hand side. Thanks for watching. Jason

I'm sure know this, but like most of plymouth the older dockyard buildings are all grey limestone.

Thank you for the info. I think the only red brick building will be the large building at the back which I’ve used references from Pompey. Everything else will be greys and sandstone tones. I just need some better weather so that I can start spraying primer!!!. Thanks for watching. Regards, Jason

@jasonpierce-newmodelbarmy3394 It's a pleasure to help. I don't live there anymore else I'd send some photos, but if you do an image search of "Devonport East Ropery" you'll get an idea of a typical building and how it was constructed. Kind regards Gary
