Troy: you did say not note for note, but it's your feel and interpretation of each song you do is what keeps your fans like me coming back again and again. Great work.
"Nativity In Black" A++ Troy (as usual). You are so smooth and your ad lib is so tasteful. Geezer was not only an phenomenal bass player but an incredible lyricist. Rudy Sarzo did a nice job on Ozzy's "Speak of the Devil".
When I was looking up some info on the song, I read that "NIB" was actually a reference to Bill Ward's beard which Geezer thought looked like the "nib" of a pen. "Nativity In Black" was just a legend, probably started by a big fan. Yeah, Sarzo, Aldridge, and Gillis all did a great job on that album, didn't they? Thanks and take care, Sam!
Classic song and bass line, great job! Really loved that fill you did around 4:11. Very nice touch, it's always a nice treat when you throw in little flourishes like that when it calls for it.
Hey Troy, that was just as good as any other cover I've heard, if not better for your individual expression. This song is a favourite of mine and a work in progress. I did in one of my previous posts asked to do this one, so thank you. You continue to inspire.
I love the way you put your “stank” all over that. I’ve messed with the way Geezer plays it over and over. What I get from this is a whole new approach on what you can do with this song. When your playing it with other musicians, you don’t hear the “original” part mocking you… you hear, “ Damn, that song is crazy hard, you nailed it!” Well played, now I have some new techniques to learn. You’re the best Fonzy!!!
This is actually Tom, Marvine's son. She asked me to post something, letting you know she's been feeling a bit "under the weather" since returning home from our mini "staycation". She enjoyed the trip but has pretty much been in bed, ever since getting home. I hope you had a great Halloween! Thanks for continuing to post such awesome videos! When my mom is feeling better, I'm sure she'll post as normal. :) Peace...
Hello Tom and thanks for reaching out. I'm so sorry to hear that Marvine isn't feeling well and Lynn and I both sincerely hope she makes a quick and full recovery. Please send her our best... and tell her that Lynn's birthday card arrived right on time and she was touched by it. It was very sweet and Lynn will be sending a thank you note shortly. Thanks for stepping in and keeping us informed. Tell your Mom that we are thinking about her and that we hope she feels better soon. I wish that you could get her on Facebook so that we could connect more and I'l love to put her in touch with my Mother, who is, I think, about the same age - 80. Thanks again, Tom and take care!
Back in the 70s and 80s I never really gave Black Sabbath much thought. My main influences were Steve Harris and Geddy Lee but in the early 2000s I bought a Black Sabbath greatest hits and I was amazed at what I had missed. Geezer Butler is now on my list along with the other two.
I started with Kiss, moved quickly to Black Sabbath, and then straight to Rush, where I remained for quite some time. Geezer was definitely a trailblazer.
Yes sir! New respect for that song and you always put it down. I always trust your interpretation and find I can count on you over most available bass tab.
My first exposure to Sabbath was Masters of Reality. So heavy! I then gobbled up all their LP's and became a big fan of Geezer. Well done on this one Troy. Happy Halloween!
Omg now I'm so freaked out in a really good way on this video because for #1 I've played regular guitar and mostly learned by ear or watch and learned but ever since I Was a young teen black Sabbath was hands down the creators of heavy metal and geezer Butler played with a style that I when I listen to "after forever" and of course "NIB" and just those 2 songs alone let me know without a doubt that's the sound and style I want to learn from because geezer just makes the songs sound so heavy just by knowing when to bang the cords really hard to also feed off of tonni and so I will be as a rookie with my first Ibanez bass and thank you sir for playing ..... One thing that I noticed with geezers bass is that he had it set to sound like a distorted like sound as if it was as loud as it would go to the point of that heavy distorted sound and so after the short freestyle intro if you are wearing earbuds or good headphones you can hear geezer suddenly turn up the volume all the way I assume to get whatever he could because that song was made to be loud and heavy tune and in 69 that album was definitely people hearing heavy metal for the first time 💯😫
i i am back. I was so very sick these past few days. I'm glad Lynn got her card on time.. I have another item for her. I am so very glad God me through that terrible illness, Love, Marvine :-)
This is great. Any chance you listened to Rudy Sarzo's take on this song from the live Ozzy album "Speak of the Devil"? Your interpretation remind me of that version. EDIT: I watched the full video and saw you mentioned this version! Good to know my ears are working!
Also since it's Halloween, in case you're not familiar (but you probably are) you might get a kick out of David Lindley & El-Rayo X covering Werewolves of London!
Man that bass sounds amazing and I thought you did absolutely awesome on the cover. Do you think the Geezer Butler version is better than the Rudy Sarzo version ?
It's funny when you see and hear different takes of well known songs. You know, the takes that didn't make it to the album. There are always little or even major variations to the parts you know. Live versions are always different. I guess I'm saying there's no need for you or anyone to play exactly note for note what the original bassplayer did. Thanks Troy.
I usually try to play my the songs as closely to the way they were recorded as I can. I have my own reasons for doing this and don't fault anyone who plays things their own way. When I don't adhere to the recorded material, I'll go out of my way to let people know that.
I can understand that. My Mother gets herself into trouble sometimes by clicking on things she shouldn't. There are a lot of people out there who try to take advantage of people.
