N is for NEVER PLACE AN INFANT SEAT ON AN ELEVATED SURFACE

As the name implies, car seats are made for the car. If you need to occasionally use an infant seat on an approved stroller as a travel system, that’s also a great option when done correctly. Car seats are safety devices for travel and not meant as a solution for sleep or lounging.

HOWEVER, many caregivers mistakenly place infant car seats on shopping carts, coffee tables, dryers (Jamie remembers this as a kid in Arkansas because the vibration would help the kid sleep which is a WHOLE OTHER THING), couches, and other elevated surfaces. Whether this is to keep a child away from pets or other siblings, or just wanting to have the baby closer to them, this is dangerous and risky behaviour.

⚠️ WARNING: Many caregivers fall into the trap of loosening the harness when baby is in the car seat outside of the vehicle, generally citing baby’s comfort as the main concern. This unfortunately has led to serious or fatal injuries when the baby’s position changes in the car seat, leading to suffocation, strangulation or asphyxiation in the car seat or on the car seat harness.

Safest option: when you’re out of the car, transfer baby out of the car seat. If you MUST use an infant seat outside of the vehicle, the safest way to do it is to place the seat on the floor, WITH baby still properly harnessed and under close supervision.
