Hi everyone. In this video I take you through some track issues I’d discovered while testing the yard layout during switching operations and how I overcame them to improve the running.
Track testing is so important but is often overlooked or not worried about about at all before fixing down and starting scenics etc. The earlier you find any problems, the easier it is to deal with them so running your stock for a few days after laying your track is really worthwhile.
Thanks for watching.

Good update,i always put a straight before points on a curve,like you said always test the track first.👍

Yes mate, always test with all your stock, even if you don’t think you’ll run it in a particular section. All my other stock was fine, only had the issue with the tank cars, so glad I did.

Thats exactly what I've done with mine, put in the little straights right next to the points instead of having a curve right next to them. Glad you got things sorted. All the best.

Thanks Tim. Good to know that you found the same solution to work too.👍🏻

Yes my Husband had to do this with HO scale KATO track , and the addition of short straight tracks has stopped the derailments

Good job sorting those points out Ben, I had problems with some new rolling stock after everything was ballasted !!

Chers mate. I know there’s only so much we can do as with all the newer and finer detailed stock being produced, we can’t budget for everything. Hopefully this will be good for the foreseeable though.

Hey, Ben! Sorry you had to rip back and re-design, but as you said, you need to test it all before doing scenics. In the end, it looks sharp and runs more smoothly, so you are ahead despite the step backwards. Keep up the great work!

Thank Anthony. I agree, luckily it’s still early days so no real drama and just glad I picked it up now.

Almost decided to steer clear of set geometry track: expensive, restrictive, and not solving enough problems in return. I am very happy to be proved wrong. For set geometry track some thought might be put into curve transitions by replacing the last two or so straights leading into a curve and the first two or so curved sections of the curve with a home made transition. Make from appropriate rail sized flex. Just an idea. As I understand it, every change of direction involves an acceleration. With our curves the train is jolted against the rails toward the centre of the curve - I believe I have this right. No wonder they come off. Transitions mollify the jolt. Your efforts do make a difference, so many thanks.

Hey Ben, sorry you had rip up and redo your track plan, but hopefully your new design works out great. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks mate. It was a bind but it was well worth doing to improve the running. Having operated it for a few days now, its's been flawless.

Greetings, I'm using all KATO tracking and experienced the same issue, was trying to decide what to do when I happened upon your vid. Thanks for triggering the gray cells! Nice layout by the way!

Hello Ben; I like what you have done,except you still have a problem.Looking at your 4 stub spur yard.All yard tracks run into your petrol spur.After 1 locomotive and a couple of cars clear the yard lead track ,your engine will be into the petrol plant.

Hi Ben, bit late to the party here... like 7 months! Anyway, there is another solution for this in filing a tiny bit of the rail away where the frog rail sits against the track. Pretty easy to do and means the rolling stock has a smoother transition on the turn out. Mike Fifer has a good video on this. Seems to be only a problem with the short kato turnouts, ok on the longer ones. Ok subscribed and looking forward to seeing developments.

My larger locomotive is fine, but a small engine for yard work is better as a tester.

I don't mean to be impolite, but you have wasted a lot of space
@EagleCreekRailRoad
@EagleCreekRailRoad 10 месяцев назад
I appreciate all feedback. I’ve tried to faithfully recreate the internal sidings within the refinery I work at as best I can given the size constraints. Obviously there’s a lot of scenery and non railroad related buildings etc missing but in time, they will appear and there won’t be as much empty space. If you check out update 6, you’ll see a lot of changes have already been made. Ben.
