Not often do we see the people of an entire city embrace a piece of equipment with such emotion. The 611 was built in Roanoke, ran through Roanoke, and WAS displayed in Roanoke. On May 24, 2014 the N&W J-Class 4-8-4 Steam Locomotive #611 was pulled from the Virginia Museum of Transportation to be restored to running condition. The museum held a send-off party and we were on-hand to witness history as the the 611 was removed for restoration. On May 25, 2014 the 611 departed Roanoke, VA on its trip to Spencer, NC for restoration.
