Virginia Museum of Transportation with the Norfolk and Western J #611 and A #1218.
The Virginia Museum of Transportation began its life in 1963 as the Roanoke Transportation Museum located in Wasena Park in Roanoke, Virginia. The museum at that time was housed in an old Norfolk & Western Railway freight depot on the banks of the Roanoke River. The earliest components of the museum's collection included a United States Army Jupiter rocket and the J class steam locomotive No. 611, donated by Norfolk & Western Railway to the City of Roanoke where many of its engines were constructed. The museum expanded its collection to include other pieces of rail equipment such as a former DC Transit PCC streetcar, and a number of horse-drawn vehicles including a hearse, a covered wagon, and a Studebaker wagon.
In November 1985, a flood nearly destroyed the museum, and much of its collection. It forced the shutdown of the facility and the refurbishment of No. 611. In April 1986, the museum re-opened in the Norfolk and Western Railway Freight Station in downtown Roanoke as the Virginia Museum of Transportation. The museum has earned that title, being recognized by the General Assembly of Virginia as the Commonwealth's official transportation museum.
The Norfolk & Western steam locomotives No. 611 and No. 1218 were originally property of the city of Roanoke due to the museum's original charter. On April 2, 2012, during VMT's 50 Birthday, the city officially transferred ownership of the locomotives to the museum.
The Norfolk and Western Railway Freight Station was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. The station consists of two clearly identifiable sections, both of which were completed in 1918. They are the two-story, fifty-bay-long, freight station proper which was built parallel to the railroad tracks and now is oriented south, and the one-story-with-basement brick annex that formerly housed the offices of the Shenandoah and Radford divisions of the Norfolk and Western. The building closed for railroad freight business in 1964.

Would love to see the 1218 back on the rails again!! I have fond memories of growing up in Birmingham Ala. and visiting the southern shops in Irondale in the 80's with my father, during which I had the opportunity to watch the 611 and 1218 being restored several times for excursion service!!

Awesome! Got to see them stretch their legs across Indiana during excursions. Loved both and how each was a very different design but both represented the pinnacle of steam for their purposes.

Great Museum, my favourite steam locomotive is the Canadian National Railways U-1-F class 4-8-2 and my favourite diesel is the Canadian National C-Liners. That J-Class is pretty sweet as well.

Amazing video! I hope to go to the VMT one day! You are right! Strasburg Railroad in PA does have a 4-8-0 Mastodon. The N&W 475. It was awesome having N&W 611 visit Strasburg for a couple of years. Hopefully one day it woll come back to visit 😊 Thanks for sharing!!

2-8-0 is called a consolidation The 4-8-0 is a mastodon At one time they had a wooden mock up of steam locomotive near the O Guage layout in the lobby area.

1218 is a sa story to me. I doubt it will ever run again. It went in for a boiler rebuild, got half way through and work stopped. So today it would coat well over $1M to start a resto and then it would have no place to run. J 611 ia viBLW BUT gain no place o run these monsters. I am glad I am old enough to have ridden behind both at speed. When the J was restored in the 80's it was still allowed to run excursions at 50+ mph....or a little more. I too keep both running on my O scale layout....and I'll need to be happy with that. thx

I'm disappointed. As someone who makes railroad videos, you don't seem to know much about trains. N&W 1776 is an SD-45, not a GP-7. A 2-8-0 wheel arrangement is a consolidation, a Mastodon is a 4-8-0. If you were there in 2001, then the J was there, under shelter. The first part of the pavilion (where 1218 now sits) was built in the 1990's specifically for the 611. The second half, which covers the next two tracks was completed in 2003 to house the 1218.

Loved visiting around 2015- had seen 611 and 1218 during the excursions across Indiana in the 90s. The good old days (to us kids!). Was at Spencer too when the first bolt was turned on 611. My favorite steamer and so glad she’s running again.
