Great video Rowan! Thank you for documenting what you were able to capture on the move of Norfolk & Western #611 from Manassas, Virginia on it way to the Strassburg Railroad in Pennsylvania. It is a shame that the road re-paving prevented you from having more time to chase the 611. We will just have to wait until July to see you being the engineer on 611. Thank you for sharing this video with us!

What is the reason NS decided to stop hosting 611 excursions after 2017? I heard Amtrak was going to take over hosting the 611 excursions, and go to more places over NS like Atlanta, GA, PA, Midwest states, etc. then in March 2018 then Amtrak head Richard Anderson decided to ban charter trains and restrict private car movements. Anderson took over from former NS CEO Wick Moorman, who had a brief time heading Amtrak after the late Joe Boardman's departure. Moorman was the reason steam excursions returned to NS for a few years. I rode behind 611 from Manassas to the wye at Front Royal on a freight only line, 102 mile round trip, on June 4, 2016. Then I rode behind 611 again at Strasburg Sept. 2019 in a open air coach. There I got to hear 611's whistle better unlike on the NS excursion in a sealed window coach far back in the train. I also rode two 765 excursions in PA as well, the second one started in my area, near Bethlehem and went through Allentown to Pittston and back on NS and RBMN tracks. I live west of Allentown.

I live in Manassas just off Wellington. That's the street you were on paralleling the tracks. They've been doing the daytime paving for the last 6 months and it is infuriating. If you are back here for any other trains scout it out and find another route if you see paving setup because they work all day and take forever. Nice footage of what you got. Depending which way it's heading there is a good viewing spot on Godwin Drive where the tracks cross and over in Gainesville just off 29 are lots of places to view.

Well I missed 611 in Manassas but did catch it at Delaplane, Boyce, Sheperdstown and Shippensburg At Lee's Crossing. I was glad to see you got this in s.manassas since I couldn't get out there. You did a great job and be careful getting on top of that pile of ballast. As always another great video my friend :-))

I agree, Rowan, it is MUCH more impressive in person. Touching that engine, you can almost feel ALL the history of that GREAT steam engine! As Jim Wrinn says (Trains magazine editor), "Its the greatest of the J class steam engines." And, maybe of all surviving steam engines.

1:34 - 2:14 Isn't there a third reason concerning the fuel source availability? I swear I recall hearing or reading somewhere that because 611's a coal burner rather than an oil burner, it limits how far she can go across the US. There aren't many places left where a coal burner can readily get a refueling of coal and I imagine the route 611 took to get to Strasburg is no exception.

This is a great observation! I don't think it's the sole reason, more coal could be added in gondolas for, and for the excursions they did, they had a gondola with a mini excavator to fill her up. 3 100-mile excursions per weekend x 5 weekends, plus to and from spots!

Excellent quality on your camera. I'm out here in Western Maryland waiting for C&O 1309 to run later this summer. Diesel powered tours start tomorrow, May 29th 2021 at Western Maryland Scenic Railroad in Cumberland MD. I haven't heard you mention much about 1309.
