N&W 611's whistle on Pere Marquette 1225-Owosso Rail Fest 2014

Between June 20 and 22, 2014, Nickel Plate 765 and Pere Marquette 1225 each pulled daily trips from Owosso, MI to Alma, MI and return. These trips operated in conjunction with the Owosso Rail Festival. Here, we see highlights from 1225's afternoon trip on June 20.

Wow that whistle echoing in the distance in the beginning of the video...thats awesome. Nowadays I hear horns and diesels. But that....that is true whistle and steam. The steam age is slowly dieing....but that whistle haunts you, it makes you remember what giants rided the rails long ago.

I was on that afternoon excursion behind the 1225 and knew that was the 611 whistle all along. Now, 611 has its whistle back, and 611 is on the go.

I like this whistle better on 1225 than the normal one. She’s a big engine and it’s deeper and richer so I think it fits her better.

Does'nt fit a Berkshire. If they replaced the whistle with 611's they should've replaced it with 261 or 765's whistle. BTW nice vid.

Don't forget about the Southern Ps-4 whistle that Bill Purdy installed on that former C&O Kanawha-type Berkshire #2716 that 611 replaced upon her first restoration in '82. The whistle belonged to SOU 1401!

It's nice that VT let them borrow 611's whistle, but I'll bet this was one of the last times they were able to do it, now that 611 has been restored to operating condition.

+BNSF9250 They didn't make him mad. He decided to leave. Preston Claytor, who owned the 1992-1994 whistle left of what VMT decided to do to the 611. In 2011 VMT, and several others declared N&W 611 was the "Spirit of Roanoke" and spirit of roanoke was written in small letters under the cab window of the fireman's side. Once restoration came. He wanted to remove the spirit of roanoke writing for her new career in service. But VMT said they wanted to keep it. So Preston left VMT and the Fire Up 611! Campaign and took his whistle with him.

***** That's really sad, seeing as that whistle was the best sounding one on her. I wish Preston would just let them use the whistle, I hardly doubt anyone notices those letters because they're so happy to see 611 running again. It's not like she was completely repainted and rebranded.

When it comes to preservation you can't afford to be picky. A full consist of a particular railroad sounds fine but alas it incredibly tricky to pull off

TheLegendsoflionel VMT loaned the whistle to SRI. They have done this before in the past.

The whistle you hear isn't the 611's original whistle that the locomotive used when it was in operational service. The original whistle sound a lot different than the one the 611 has now.
