SOTA / POTA 2-fer Activation at Monte Sano State Park : N4BKY uses CW and her straight key!
What started out as a failed attempt ended up being double the fun! Monte Sano State Park is not only a POTA location, but a SOTA spot as well. We definitely learned some lessons to double or triple check your gear before heading but thankfully had the time to try again the next day. Monte Sano is a great park with hiking, biking, and some pretty nice locations to set up your gear for a fun day!

❓WHO ARE WE?
We're Michael & Becky, also known as N4FFF and N4BKY. We're an adventure couple who also loves CW (morse code) and radio stuff. We are both trying to get better at CW so having two of us there trying to copy really helps us figure most of it out! We love adventures and this is another way for us to get out there and have fun together.
If you catch one of us on the air most likely we are both at the ready. We like to hunt POTA's and each make contact so don't be surprised if you hear from us both.
Please email us or leave a comment if you watch along and make contact with us someday. We'd love to hear from you!
73,
Michael and Becky

Have you activated or considered activating before? Hopefully seeing our mistakes makes it a little less intimidating. We just go for it!

Mike (N4FFF) here. I totally agree. All of the time during conversational QSOs people will tell me how lucky I am with an YL who enjoys the hobby also. I'm thankful for that all the time. The thing is, it's not just on CW. I'm thankful that we enjoy so many of the same things. Becky is amazing at CW, but an amazing person in general

Thank you 😊. I prefer the straight key over the paddle. I still make mistakes but feel like I’m in more control. HIHI 😊

Thank you! We love portable and are portable most of the time. Even at home we are mostly outside on the porch or in a hammock :-) HIHI Its ironic that in the intro I said this is our "backup battery". I can't believe we forgot the adapter for our Lipo battery that we normally use. We now check everything twice and have a backup adapter too! de N4FFF (Mike) & N4BKY (Becky)

Excellent work. No need to be nervous. Your copy and sending skills are well good enough for parks and peaks.

Thank you so much!! I get nervous probably right up until I actually start sending and then there really just isn't time for nerves anymore. You just go with it, mistakes and all!! We are having fun so that is really what matters :-)

@@HamRadioDuo Oh I totally get it, but I agree with what you say. Once you get going time just flies by... I do a lot of activations as well (G90 and QCX as well!) POTA, SOTA, and WWFF parks program is also very popular here in Australia. I like to do a variety of types of activating.. Sometimes I just grab a quick 10, sometimes I settle in for a few hours and end up with way more than that in the log... Especially when conditions start going well... Anyway it's been great seeing you getting started. Cheers.. Scott VK4MGL

We are doing some POTA activations in FL this week while on vacation and it's definitely fun being at the beach when contacts start coming in really strong from all over!! Hard to not just call "one more time". HIHI. Hope to catch you on the air sometime!

Great job. KD1RT does a lot of activations, and was first activator in a lot of parks around me in MA. I bet he was a P2P over in NY. I think you said this was your second activation. Comparing this one to your first activation you're both copying faster and seem more confident. A noticeable improvement in just one activation! Pretty much everyone uses Anderson PowerPoles on their batteries/radios. You can still forget adapter cables, but it makes it much easier to not forget them. You at least won't need special adapters for every battery. Side note: Your hammock is hung too tight. Give it some more slack and it'll be more comfortable. :)
@HamRadioDuo
@HamRadioDuo 10 дней назад
Thank you for the compliment !! We are definitely recognizing the improvements and can actually talk to each other a little bit when sending. HIHI!! Michael (the tech guy) has looked into the PowerPoles, but we currently use XT60's and our radio uses a barrel plug and that's the adapter we were missing :-) I feel like we check everything 100x and still forget something. P.S. Thanks for the hammock tip, a combined weight makes it a little more challenging 🙂

@@HamRadioDuo The more you do it, the more automatic things become. I realized that once when I was intently watching a bird while calling CQ and even made a correction mid stream without even thinking about it. You guys are doing great. LOL about checking and still forgetting. Even if it's not powerpoles, at least you have a standard connector so that's good. Lastly, the rule of thumb for hammocks is the straps should hang down at 30 degrees from the tree without anyone in it. POTA On!

Thanks Lidi ! I like to write things down and having Michael put it into the PoLo app at the same time is super helpful. The decoder is built into the radio but we don’t use it and usually just forget it’s there. HIHI !!
