I remove the cams and vanos units. and talk about various bits.
on the end theirs an update on the vanos impulse sensor wheels. i was wrong about the tool being used to hold the vanos units. rather it holds the impulse wheels in the right spot critical for the sensors.
and it cut me off short toward the end before the vanos video. sorry.

Oh my god!!! Thank you SOOOO much! The fact that you mentioned that the sprockets were in and ex for intake and exhaust fixed my car!!! I brought my engine to a shop and they put the two sprockets on backwards and I've been trying to figure this issue out for the last year and a half!! From the bottom of my heart thank you so much!!

@37:20 you zoom into what looks like a blue paper towel stuffed in what looks like a freeze plug to the left of the spark plug. What exactly is that? I have a little oil in that spot and can’t figure it out.

I can do this while the engine is still in the car right I'm doing a complete engine tear down cause I did the money shift bent valve I'm very mechanically inclined but this it the first time I'm doing this I'm doing a complete tear down on my 2011 BMW 328xi I know it's hard but I'm thinking the hardest part is the timing of the engine but this video helped me a lot thanks

Nathan Ouimette head removal is possible while in the car.

Nathan Ouimette your bmw wont have the n54. I belive the 328 is an n52. While similarly built..i do not.

Can you re-use the camshaft bolts ? I mean the bolts that keep that camshaft cover together

Hello, while changing CCV(due to high oil consumption), the old hose that went from CCV to crankcase was not even connected, after installing new CCV and connecting all hoses, engine started fine and was driving good. After changing oil, engine went into limp mode, long crank, wanting to stall, jumping rpms , check engine light. Engine is N52 002A82 VANOS INTAKE 002A9A Crankshaft inlet camshaft synchronization P0341 Camshaft position sensor "A" circuit range/performance (Bank1 or single sensor) Clearing codes does help, but mechanic said it will return and didnt advise me to drive since chain can jump off vanos Any idea? What could be broken?
@RocketSurgeon540
@RocketSurgeon540 7 лет назад
TheAkNas You jumped timing. The timing chain sprocket is only held to the crankshaft with a friction washer (no woodruff key). The timing chain sprocket likely rotated a few degrees. The engine needs to be retimed, and the crank hub, friction washer, and crank bolt should be replaced.

your expert opinion needed dropped a piece of gasket two and a quarter inches long while cleaning valve cover gasket job I tried to retrieve by vacuum but no luck I also tried to flush it still no luck some says eventually will end up in my oil pan is this going to ruin my engine 335i please response I thank you
@Bobdudeman1988
@Bobdudeman1988 5 лет назад
I cant say it will or wont damage anything. I would drop the oil pan to get it out. If it fell down an oil galley. Otherwise try blowing it out with compressed air

Does your n54 have the OEM round steel blocking rings around each piston ...now replaced for either plastic or silicone blocking rings? I need the newer OEM plastic ones
@Bobdudeman1988
@Bobdudeman1988 7 лет назад
im not sure what you mean by the blocking rings? the freeze plugs?

What would be symptoms of faulty 11mm bolts that hold the intake/exhaust Vanos plates and vanos unit to timing chain?? I kno the N52 bolts were 9 or 10mm so I know they can become insufficient. What symptoms would occur at this point? Thanks again!
@Bobdudeman1988

timming issues? it would throw faults in relation to the vanos system

I have an N54 and developed a 2A87 exhaust vanos mechanism fault code. I tried to swap the intake and exhaust vanos solenoids but the code did not follow. Would the next course of action involve replacing the exhaust vanos unit? Thank you.
@Bobdudeman1988
@Bobdudeman1988 6 лет назад
Philip C i havent seen to many fail. Usually its a result of cam bearing leadge failure. Loss of oil pressure to the unit is a result.

I have had the bearing ledges replaced on both intake and exhaust along with the change of the hook ring seals to teflon. I also pulled the non return valves to see if they are clogged and they weren't. What do think I should do next?
@micsmith806
@micsmith806 6 лет назад
Get it figured out? I had the same issue on a x3 I had purchased, ended up being old serpentine belt that sucked into the engine and was partially clogging the oil pickup and causing low oil pressure similar to the bearing ledge issue

Hi. My mechanic rotated the engine counter clockwise when doing leakdown test, a few rotations, i think i heard the tensioner rest and click, im scared!! What could happen? We haven't started it yet

moe capitol auto Network i cant say it will be fine but i would try to start it.. If its one or 2 teeth of time your not gonna smash valves.

Thanks for your help. Do you think for sure it jumped timing, or maybe?
@Bobdudeman1988
@Bobdudeman1988 7 лет назад
the only way to tell would be to dig into it. spend 1000s on labor to be sure. or like i said. try to start it. even so if your mechanic rotated the engine wrong and it does damage they would have to pay to fix it..right?

I keep getting vanos solenoid (exhaust) codes even after ive changed both solenoids. As a result, the ecu forces the engine to go into limp mode. To fix this, will i have to replace the vanos camshaft unit?
@Bobdudeman1988
@Bobdudeman1988 7 лет назад
Could be cam bearing leadge wear..id look for that. That could cause oil pressure issues that would trip it
@aibel99
@aibel99 7 лет назад
bobdudeman1988 ill check out common syptoms later on and try and see if its the cam bearing ledge. If it is, will a vanos unit replacement solve the problem?
@Bobdudeman1988
@Bobdudeman1988 7 лет назад
aibel99 not if your cam leadge bearing is worn. The vanos unit wont get oil pressure and it won't function.

hello, i am interested to hear how your problem was solved. BMW changed both my solenoids and my problem still isn't fixed. I am in the same boat you were in.

@Bobdudeman1988

not much. gotta find time to strip the bottom end apart..looks like its fried and not worth fixing. sell off good parts for a friend and that would be the end of it

okay.. I think I have bad oil rings, looking for a replacement. Just curious as to how complicated a rebuild would be..

+pennypacker2000 on what an n54? there are alot of other things that can cause an n54 to burn oil.
