First off, thanks so much for FOUR YEARS! If you haven't scooped up a t-shirt or pin, we're having an SSFF merch fire sale so now's the time - www.stopskeletons.com/shop Secondly, did anyone spot the secret in the video yet? If you haven't, no cheating!!

So... in Rogue Squadron, if you type in “CHICKEN” on the passcode screen, then you will be instantly put into an AT-ST walker mission. When I was 5, I did not know how to spell chicken, and my older brother was not home. I asked my great grandma, a Polish immigrant, to write the word on a napkin for me. She then wrote “chicken” not only in cursive... but also in Polish. I did not play the mission that day.

Wampa Stompa from Shadows of the Empire has always been my favourite just because of how difficult it is to enter. My favourite game ever for cheat codes is Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga (along with all the other Lego games by Travellers Tales) because they handle the codes amazingly, there’s a huge section of the menu with like 50 “extras” which let you do tons of stupid stuff, switching your characters, making everyone wear those stupid glasses and moustache disguises, and there’s even some Star Wars-specific references like making Chewbacca carry C3PO like he does in Empire Strikes Back, or having the ships tow the Death Star instead of bombs. The extras are all unlocked by finding red power bricks hidden in levels and then buying the extra in the shops. Some of the extras are proper cheats too, for example there’s a hidden red brick in the last stage of Empire Strikes Back that unlocks Disarming Troopers, which replaces every Stormtrooper blaster with A CARROT, and makes them harmless except from melee attacks, which makes it easier to get true Jedi in some levels. It also affects the player, if you use the code and play as a stormtrooper, you don’t get a blaster either! It makes a few stages unbeatable in story mode since you need to reflect trooper lasers, but you can disable the extra at any time so it’s fine.

One of my favorite N64 cheats as a kid came from Rogue Squadron. In addition to the Naboo Starfighter and the car there were other unlockable ships. The Millennium Falcon (which normally the camera pans past in the hanger) was unlockable with a cheat. But the really cool thing was that if you put in another cheat after that one then you could unlock a super secret ship. You go to the hanger and head to the Millennium Falcon. Once you have it selected, you push up and the camera goes around and behind the Falcon to reveal a TIE Interceptor. Getting to fly that around was super cool to me, especially since the Naboo Starfighter code was already put in on our copy when we got it and I had no idea that there was a playable TIE Interceptor.

Something fascinating was uncovered by Rare developers within the past year or so: Stop N' Swop was planned not just for Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, but Donkey Kong 64 as well! In fact, they were planning on introducing it to all of their games going forward. However, Nintendo noticed at some point in development that Donkey Kong 64 was scanning the critical pieces of memory as soon as the game started up, which was not allowed in their book. They sent Rare a notice telling them that they could not do this, and so Stop N' Swop was scrapped from that point on. This revelation comes from the Twitter account of longtime Rare developer Paul Machacek.

Here’s something neat about the goldeneye codes. When you do the button codes it pops up what the code activated was in the corner. This also occurs when using a gameshark. Therefore that means the game shark is actually accessing the button combination in memory !

One of my favorite games for cheats was the 2000 'Spider-Man' game. Not only did it have the usual big heads, big feet, and unlimited webbing, but there was a Pulsating Head cheat where Spidey's head would slowly grow and shrink rhythmically.

I was friends with the guy who used an Action replay to hack the original GE 007 cheat codes (and his alias at the time was none other than 'Doctor Doak', and he lived in Edinburgh, Scotland). It was only because he found them, and then published the full list online, did Nintendo make them official. I'm glad that you got that bit of history right when it came to those cheat codes. :)

As an old Rareware fanboy, I loved that Banjo and Diddy Kong Racing had codes as part of the main game. Racing in DKR with all balloons set to maximum turbo (ROCKETFUEL + FREEFORALL) is hilarious. And uncontrollable. Also, CHEATSUPERBANJO in Banjo-Tooie just makes it so much better to replay.

Still love it that when you spam left mouse button on a critter in Warcraft 3 and it's expansion The Frozen Throne, it explodes, smashing the ground, scattering blood and leaving an atomic mushroom like cloud for a few seconds on the field. Totally useless since it can't damage anyone. But a great sight you get and it's a cheat that I still use regularly whenever I play WC3 :)

Man, I wish you had included the “dual wield two different weapons” code for Goodeneye. I freakin loves that one. Granted, it is basically as much of a glitch as it is a code. It was basically a specifically button order that - when pressed fast enough - would let you use two different weapons at the same time(if they were adjacent in the cycle). Still, I thought it was so cool.

Some of my favorite cheats came from me experimenting with a game genie on the SNES. I was playing secret of Mana and tried to change the item you get from the chest in the first village. It turns out that the chest can trigger all kinds of unexpected cutscenes and events. One game genie code made the end-game fight against thanks start when you open that chest. Kinda hard to fight thantos when you're level 1 while inside the small room of a house basement. But my favorite code was the one that SHOT YOU INTO THE OCEAN!

I have a lot of favorite cheat codes, but one that kind of stands out to me and really encouraged players to look around...was Sony hiding entire demos in their Interactive Sampler Packs that came with the PS1, and the entire URNOTE campaign that rewarded players for recording commercials, folding magazine pages, and even decrypting what their mysterious messages were.

When we ended up getting gauntlet dark legacy for the ps2, we would always use the code "Purple" as your name so you could always fire your special attack. Along with that code's god like ability your special attacks would render you invulnerable to attacks while the animation played, your shots moved through all walls meaning so it could also unveil secrets and practically kill any enemies in a matter of 1-8 presses depending on the enemy. It just kinda branded you a cheater by making it your name, but I love that little cheat! I only learned recently of the skin codes you could get, but they're pretty neat.

My favorite dumb cheat is in San Francisco Rush to drive the flaming wreck that your car turns into when it explodes. The way the game physics work, driving the flaming wreck makes the column of flames blow back directly into the camera so you can't see anything but a mess of red and orange. To be able to see what you're doing, you have to switch to the first-person view, which keeps you from seeing your car at all!

Disco in Warcraft 2 is pretty hilarious. It plays a remix of a song from the first game with lots of unit lines and bits of narration from cinematics. Radio free zerg from Starcraft has a similar effect.

Ohhhh. So while I never played Mario Tennis or Mario Golf on the 64, I did (and still do) play Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour on the Gamecube like an addict, and it has those same password tournaments. I remember when I first found the code for one online called the "Hyrule Tournament" and thought it might unlock a Zelda themed secret course, and was super let down when it was, well what it was. Glad to finally know all these years later what they were used for at least! Also it's kinda weird how it seemed like Camelot dropped the Mario Tennis ones after only a couple months but kept inputting them into their games for years to come, although that probably was intentional and they were just used for promotion I guess.

My favorite game for cheats was (and still is) World's Scariest Police Chases for the PS1. Slomo jumps, different infinite weapons, Hippie mode, Fish mode, Halloween mode... In retrospect I loved the foreshadowing of the "unlock all cheats" code in Turok 2. If I remember correctly it was "bewareoblivionsathand" and in the next game the main antagonist was indeed oblivion. Obviously they already had their plans for the sequel...

I can say this the last modern titles that I have ever played that had builtin unlockable cheats was Uncharted 1 and 2 on PS3. It's amazing that battle for Naboo had commentary for every level and the devs were able fit all that on a N64 cartridge. Also very interesting cheats.

I love the Rush 64 cheats 1 of them unlocked the Alcatraz track and if you used the stop timer cheat and played 2 player practice you could play an endless game of tag. Plus using the cheats in Rush made it a lot easier to collect all the keys in the race courses, which you needed to unlock 2 more cars. I also liked the WAMPASTOMPA code from Star Wars Shadows of the Empire

I only found out a few months ago about a cheat for an N64 game I've had almost as long as I've had an N64. In Pokemon Puzzle League, there is a series of buttons to unlock playing against Mewtwo in multiplayer mode, where the first player is Ash and the second player is Mewtwo. If I recall correctly, this one also had the added bonus of being a "best of 1" match compared to the normal "best 2 out of 3" matches in multiplayer. Unfortunately it cannot be saved and the button combo must be pressed every time when desired to be played. I played this game a ton as a kid and I didn't even know Mewtwo's level in the single player mode. So to see it in multiplayer was amazing!

I'm surprised you didn't mention the infamous WAMPA STOMPA cheat for Star Wars Shadows of the Empire, where you could play as an AT-ST or as a Wampa! My favourite cheat of all time? "there is no cow level" Okay, we're talking PC games (Starcraft, specifically) but the cheat's double meaning of allowing you to skip a level while debunking the 2 year old meme that Diablo had a secret cow level was awesome.

Happy anniversary! I'm really surprised with all the Star Wars game content you didn't have anything from Star Wars Episode 1 Racer. It honestly surprised me how decent of a game it was even today. Probably one of my favorite cheat codes from it is the Dual Mode where if you put in "RRDUAL" for the player name with a bunch of obtuse inputs while entering it, THEN plugging in a second controller into the 3rd port, you could play with 2 controllers (one controller for each engine of the pod racer). Its nothing that would give you any sort of advantage, but it was super cool that they'd make that level of immersive game play option back in the day.

My favorite cheat code has to be the What if Modes from the two N64/PSX Neversoft Spider-Man games, turning the game into a festival of hidden easter eggs and inside jokes. I also love Onimusha Dawn of Dreams hiding off a secret Versus mode which was completely broken and let you control bosses of the game even... with additional cheat codes for unlocking street fighter costumes and joke weapons, how cool is that?

In Symphony of the Night you can actually input different names for your save file to alter Alucard's starting stats in various ways. There's also a way to play through the entirety of Symphony as Richter :D (but I think there you have to have already beaten the game with the good ending, first)

Congrats on 4 years! I've been a fan since the HVGN days, and I look forward to many more! My favorite cheats were probably Goldeneye unlockables (DK, paintball, golden gun, etc). If we're talking classic, you-have-to-know-the-secret cheats, then it's definitely " Wampa Stompa" on Shadows of the Empire (let's you play as different enemy characters, including a snow trooper, wampa, and even an AT-ST)

A lesser-known game called Rocket: Robot on Wheels had some great cheats. That's a N64 with an honest-to-goodness physics engine! A lot of the cheats let you mess with the physics, giving you things like low gravity. The main character is a robot with a tractor beam he can use to grab stuff, and one cheat let you grab almost any object in the game. As you can imagine, that one could get pretty bah-roken at times. And if you used the low gravity and high jump cheats together, in certain areas, you could straight up jump out of the level and fall into the void.

Some of my favorite cheats were from Humongous Entertainment's line of children's point-and-click adventure games. The devs loved to sneak in wildly inappropriate hidden content, only accessible through obtuse button combinations or by inputting a string of text into the game's internal files. There's something delightfully anarchic about seeing these bright, child-friendly characters doing horribly crude things :p
