Wow, Rare were all over the place back then in term of genres of released games and changes during development. They covered so many genres and did so much work with so few people.
Nintendo dropped the ball by not purchasing Rare when they had the chance, I could only imagine the bangers they would be putting out today... Then again, it's possible Nintendo would just have them on the shelf like they have Next Level Games and Retro Studios (although they still develop games)
@@Fernando17892 Rare would've most likely just developed games similar to what they did on Xbox, they were already out of their prime in the 2000s and Nintendo buying them wouldn't have changed them much.
It's weird and tragic to see how they fell from grace and never really recovered. The sky was the limit, seemingly, but turns out they plateaued on the 64
So basically, every Rare game on the N64 is like that episode of Black Books where they try to write a children’s book. “How about instead of the caveman, there’s an elephant? And instead of the real-time strategy and the time-travel, they’re all racing because he’s… lost his balloon?” “But it would still be my story in essence, my vision?” “…Yeah.”
Even though we got Banjo and Kazooie, I feel like Dream was such a tragic loss. It looked to have quite the potential in both forms that were shown off in Rare Replay (the footage shown in the video) It should be noted that some things from it found their way into other games. Captain Blackeye who can be found in Banjo Tooie was to be the main antagonist of Dream and even hints to the fact of this game when you talk to him saying things like "Once, I had a dream" and "A bear and bird took my glory, kind of looked like you" Also the main theme (heard in this video) got reworked into a Donkey Kong track and later into a track used in Viva Piñata called Oven-Fresh Days. The song High Tides, Swift Sails found in Rare Replay would eventually be reworked for Gloomy Galleon in DK64
Ryota Kawade: "The power of Rage made him turned Green." "If Mario becomes Luigi than he'll be very dangerous!" Rage and going Berserk, turning Green, and huge power boost. Nintendo lowkey confirmed Luigi is as strong as the Hulk.
The Pokemon Snap cut content really fascinates me. The fact they would originally were gonna have boss levels and then Nintendo incorporated that into the new Snap game is really awesome. Also, I would have loved to see a safari level in the original game with ekans and other safari pokemon.
I often hear the Klobb was named in 'honour' of Ken Lobb, but I'm not sure how accurate this is. At the time it was thought that naming the absolutely worst gun in the game after him was meant as an insult, after Nintendo of America had forced Rare to censor the more violent aspects of the game/blood and the use of actual gun names. I certainly remember reading this in N64 Magazine. (Seriously, the Klobb is a pea shooter with horrendous accuracy/RoF, and a miserable magazine size. You don't accidentally make something THAT awful).
Censoring the gun names is a legal issue. Many real gun names are copyrighted, and they probably didn't have the time to verify which ones were safe or not It's the reason why even some COD games change the name of some real guns. In some releases they just... didn't get the rights lol
@@Wartooth91 I think that was supposed to be the "joke" I take it to be just the desperate, toothless edgelord weasel words of an untalented little kid who actually couldn't make content this good (or really any at all) if his life depended on it, thus settling for the pathetic sort of attention that this kind of 2nd grader stunt in a comment section garners him for all of 15 minutes.
@@WIImotionmasher sorry, yeah fairly certain you’re right on that. My other point regarding censorship/interference stands though. Thanks for agreeing about the lack of accuracy, ‘lol’
Rare was such an impressive company back then and still is today. They jumped into 3D gaming headfirst with like a 10 person team and almost no prior experience and only things to reference from. And yet, they still managed to make games that defined the console and pushed it to it's limits.
@JRRR92 I mean, can you name one game dev company from the 90's who has stayed solid to this day, with no major dips in quality? Things change, companies rise and companies fall.
I appreciate that, even after all of these years, y’all at DYKG are still making quality videos. They may not be the most popular, but I definitely find them enjoyable
They make good videos, but I wish they treated it more like Did You Know Gaming instead of Did You Know Nintendo. Almost every video they put out focuses on Nintendo.
@@lakitudude7577 They do, which is a fatal error they imposed on themselves. They did mostly Nintendo videos, which built them a primarily Nintendo fanbase, so now they feel like they have to do Nintendo videos to stay alive. If they'd just do more non-Nintendo videos, they'd build up more non-Nintendo followers and the non-Nintendo videos would get more views. Their current model is unsustainable, eventually they're going to run out of Nintendo trivia entirely and they'll have to stop exclusively doing Nintendo videos. I'm looking forward to that day
I can’t imagine the feeling of realizing the only way a game could be released in a good state was for it to switch genres. To have to scrap a ton of work and start over with a fresh new idea must’ve been hard. Especially in the days of early 3D, when developers had a whole new dimension to wrestle with and use.
That is actually one of the hardest, but most important skills for a game designer: Letting ideas go if they don't fit, no matter how much you love them. Learned that from Mark Brown.
Fun fact, Banjo was originally a background character in Project Dream. The pirate in the Banjo 2 was actually a character from that game, and hints as much. Oh,.and Perfect Dark was Golden Eye 2, but they couldn't use 007 anymore. That said, it's better than 007 in every way. Oh,.and Conker made his debut in Diddy Kong Racing.
Funny that only a few of the characters in DKR went on to be characters in later franchises. I feel like all of the characters could have gone on to have their own game series given the resources (though I imagine it was never the plan to do that)
@@NinjaLobsterStudios and if not a a series for each character individually, then definitely a series including said characters. It’s too bad we didn’t get to see more of these guys. I’m sure if Nintendo acquired Rare instead of Microsoft, we might of got to see it
@@GabePuratekuta Nothing, but not everyone wants to sit through a sponsorship segment. Personally, I'd rather we be told who's sponsoring the episode right at the beginning. An indie game? Sure, I'll give that a look-in, but stuff like Buyee has no appeal to me, and DYKG has already got the sponsorship deal, so it doesn't hurt anyone. People can still watch the sponsor if they want, but I'm just hoping to make things more convenient for those who don't want to.
Was kind of hoping you might talk a bit about Castlevania 64, how Cornell from Legacy of Darkness was originally designed for the first 64 game as an imprisoned werewolf trapped in Dracula's castle, how there was going to be a 4th playable character named Collar who was like a mashup of Ash Williams and Frankenstein's monster that got reworked into the Gardener enemy, there were plans for a whip-swinging mechanic like in Super Castlevania 4, Carmilla was at least partially modeled, the boss Carrie fights in the Castle center was planned to be Sypha resurrected as a vampire, etc. Honestly you could probably make a whole video about the Castlevania series
If technology wasn't advancing so rapidly in the mid-90s, I bet Rare would've liked to make a few more SNES games. The transition to the N64 must've been difficult for Rare, but the results are worth it.
To be fair, maybe it's just my old man nastalga, but it's 2022 and I want more SNES games. There is just something about that sound chip, that makes wonders, and impeccable sprite work can never be beat by good graphics imo.
I feel like the N64 Disk Drive was a huge missed oportunity for the system, it would've brought some needed extra space for plenty of games that needed it and the fact that it was made with magnetic disks in mind would've meant cheaper games for the developers to produce and probably cheaper for consumers to buy. But alas, hindsight is 20-20, but I still like to think of what it could've been possible if they didn't cancel the N64DD in the west.
My cousins would come stay with my grandma all summer long. I lived next door. They would bring their n64 with them. I always looked forward to getting to spend the summer playing banjo kazooie/tooie and diddykong racing as well as mario party. Rare games were my favorite and a very cherished part of my childhood that I had a "rare" opportunity to play :P
Knowing how little of the original Paper Mario had to do with "paper" really makes me think the focus on the arts & crafts gimmicks in the newer titles has missed the point.
It was a very experimental time back then, there were no solid foundations or expectations of what a 3d game was or what it could be. So much creativity it is very inspiring.
Bomberman Heroes has my absolute favorite video game soundtrack of all time. I spend countless hours on that game as a kid. That drum & bass is sooooooooo good. 👌
Im glad goldeneye turned out the way it did, think it was my most played game when i was a kid, just wish i knew what speedrunning was back then as watching content and even attempting a few runs myself recently made me really appreciate the game more.
For real. Glad multiplayer got added late in development, spent many many hours playing with family/friends. I could never beat facility under 2:05 on 00 agent back in the day.
Conker 12 Tails is my most wanted beta. it looks SO GOOD, I mean I'm really happy we got the retail version of Conker but I really want to explore that Conker beta
I was kinda shocked to hear then say OoT didn't change much in development, what with Zelda 64, the N64DD stuff, and all the massive overhauls it had through the years. Though I suppose at it's core it was still the same gameplay and genre, but the game on release certainly wasn't what it started as. Still an amazing video though
So many dropped assets... A 3D town, the "unicorn fountain", a radically-different design for Link... plus the cut NPCs that probably should've stuck around, even as just market extras.
One thing you sort of got wrong (At least semantically) about Diddy-kong Racing. - You mentioned Banjo being a Cameo in the game but technically that's not correct as Diddy Kong racing released BEFORE Banjo Kazooie. This makes Banjos appearance in DKR a debut, not really a Cameo.
Banjo was supposed to come out before Diddy Kong Racing, but was delayed to Summer ‘98. DKR took its place for the Holiday ‘97 title, so it technically was a cameo. The instruction manual for DKR even mentions Kazooie, well before she made her game debut.
LOL, Paper Mario was literally one of only three RPGs on the Nintendo 64 (the other two being Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber, and Quest 64). So it being the best is rather by default, like winning tetherball against a quadriplegic.
Kid me never would’ve guessed Paper Mario was once a direct sequel to Super Mario RPG. But I’m glad I got to play it as it ended up. It’s my favorite game ever! ^_^
I just want Microsoft to just bring back the original team to actually make Project Dream. Or at least make the demo playable. It's awesome to see more and more information coming out about that game after years of little to no information.
I wonder what pokemon would have lived in the haunted snap course. The ghosts are obvious, but there's only 3 in gen 1. Maybe some psychics and poison types. I could see something similar to diglette with Abra, teleporting around as you snapped photos and maybe evolving if you took enough photos
is there any other company like Rare where there devs were kind of a jack of all trades? they didnt have many people, but they put out so many different genres of games and they were all well made and very polished for many years. meanwhile as far as i know, any other company has dedicated teams to make one kind of game.
@14:25 you have to wonder whether or not they took some of the ideas from the Dream Project and place some of it in Sea of Thieves. It's common to have past projects influence future projects so someone should ask.
Rare "well you see, banjo has a magic backpack, that's why he can do what he does" Also Rare "Wings coming out of his magic backpack just doesn't make a lick of sense"
Everybody was praised that Banjo-Kazooie back in Nintendo on the switch and I could definitely see why! They're still begging Rare for another Banjo-Kazooie game with the roots of what made the first 2 Banjo games fun and enjoyable!
I think that's the main difference between Nintendo and Microsoft Microsoft found out Rare had a prototype of Project Dream and put It on RU-vid where as Nintendo would have either locked It In their vault or destroyed It
i wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if it was revealed that goldeneye snes was fully completed but is just rotting away on a prototype cartridge in tim stamper's house.
For the Diddy Kong Racing segment, I'd like to point out that Banjo's debut was actually Diddy Kong Racing, not Banjo-Kazooie like many people believe.
Still playing my console just about everyday especially since I got an Everdrive baby. Always have loved the console there's just so much about it that's charming and comfy. Then all the beta stuff is so fascinating and I get the biggest urge to want them more than other games. I'm so glad the n64 has recently had a big boom with modding, the gigaleak, and iceberg stuff.
Since Mariokart 8 has Excitebike and F-Zero tracks remade for it, I have been hoping the next game would get a Diddy Kong Racing track remade for that game.
I'm interested in the time traveling caveman somehow becoming the tactician in a command and conquer style RTS. I mean, he would have had to go into a future where none of the people with ray guns, know about survival tactics such as covering yourself in mud so that they can't be detected by the evil robot's themo-vision or something. or an alien with shield tech that can only be bested by slow moving projectiles, like arrows, javelins, spear thrusting.... oh and you could probably have the caveman learn a thing or two, and incorporate it/them into his tactics? imagine a caveman with a rocket launcher firing towards a rock face which collapses onto enemy targets.
Rare was worried that wings coming out of a backpack didn't make sense? Banjo is a bipedal bear that wears shorts and a backpack, who is collecting puzzle pieces to try to stop an ugly green witch from stealing his sisters looks. But backpack wings was a stretch too far I guess lol
