It's funny how the N64 had better graphics (64 bits) and power but the cartridges was a huge bottleneck and the the PS1 had lesser graphics (32 bits) and power but the CDs made it possible for Sony to take advantage of bigger games and FMV (full motion video)
The video was very entertaining and i learned alot from all this. SHEESH. as a man who PLAYED every single console from 2005 at 4 years old to NOW, this opened my eyes on ALOT. Nice video bro!
Some may claim that PSX got two year head start to N64. But, N64 got two and half years head start for proper 3D -analog control. -Who even plays those old PSone games these days anymore that did not support analog + rumble?
I was born in 2000, but my gaming life started with the Nintendo 64 and the SEGA Dreamcast. Although I didn't play many video games, I did play some titles like Super Mario 64, the Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, Donkey Kong 64, Mario Kart 64, Hydro Thunder, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and Resident Evil Code Veronica.
Me the Dreamcast kid just vibing on the side. Oh the Dreamcast was my older cousin's, the 1st console I ever played on. Awesome games by Sega and others for sure. But the 1st console i owned myself was an 8bit one, like only played Atari games. In the early 2000s. I don't remember where it came from either lol.
@@TheeBreadShow i really am tbh. If you ever feel like it, definitely check out the Sega side of RU-vid or retrospectives on the Dreamcast. Just nothing but good vibes and very educational not just for the console, but the industry as we know it. And hey, you might learn of some games to try, it's pretty simple to emulate thankfully.
12:55 Not true. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was on GameCube in 2004, and many FF and other Square games were on GBA, DS, 3DS before 2019. Sony just apparently got exclusive console rights to many mainline Final Fantasy titles after 6. I don't think Square was ever beefing with Nintendo, it's just that their business interests aligned with Sony's.
Yes it was more business and Sony making a deal with Square Enix for exclusivity. But that has ended recently due to low sales. Square should had broken that deal years ago. Now they will go multiplatform
Excellent take imo. I feel like ps1 and n64 are a tie in the post generation. N64 has the big N titles, but PS1 was home to the second half of the jrpg golden age.
N64 was a big let down for a lot of people at the time. Has about 12 great first party games and a bunch of bullshit. The PS1 library was stacked so heavy that it got most of my playtime in the 90's and into the 2000s...
Honestly I strongly felt the same way but more towards gaming afterwards. We had the first successful CD based game console going head to head with the last successful cartridge based game console. Both consoles has many advantages over each other. We are still getting games ported from both systems to this day. Personally I have to go with PS1 for a few key reasons. Overall better audio, more variety of games, better controllers and a more unique memory unit aka memory cards.
PS1 won the console battle of the 90s, but Nintendo won the console wars in the long run. Look at how Switch is doing, it's on its way to beating the PS2 as the best-selling console of all time. Whereas the other console manufacturers lost to PC.
@@Nonantement Yes that is true, I just mentioned the PS1 since that was the bigger focus of the video. But of course the PS2 was also dominating in the early 2000s.
I’m 34 years old and while I have a ps5 and my gf has a switch, I spend 90% of my gaming time playing ps2 and GameCube games. Between the 2 there are way too many quality bangers to count, modern games can’t hold a candle to that period of time
My consoles in order are SNES, PS1, PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox1x. Once halo 4 came out and was a huge disappointment I had no reason to buy Xbox anymore. I bought a used xb1x for halo mcc once it was finally fixed though
Great vid! But to be honest, it's hard to make a case for why the N64 is better that isn't basically just saying "it's better because it has Nintendo games." Which isn't too compelling when the PS1 had so many more games of equal quality and influence (and also had undeniably much more variety to its library).
My first gaming console my family had was the NES that my older cousins gave to us (I grew up in the early 2000s) and then shortly after we got a PS2 and my older sister got a N64
You don't see a whole lot of N64 vs PS1 debates. One outsold the other by 4 to 1. It was good though. Both were great in their own way. Then the 6th gen came and it pretty much hasn't stopped.
Corrections that need to be made is that the N64 analog stick is omni directional. And final fantasy came back to Nintendo with crystal chronicles on GC. Unless you're talking specifically the mainline titles
I love both systems but here isnmy subjective opinion. Nintendo had quality, PlayStation had quantity. But when it comes down to which, I'm picking......
"Sony ALWAYS wins, baby! You can't beat Sony! Sony ALWAYS wins!" -Chad Warden. In the 80s and 90s, the ARCADES are where you went to experience cutting edge tech. Namco and SEGA's rivalries are what inspired Sony to make the PlayStation a 3D console, and influenced the creation of a LOT of its games (Crash Bandicoot for one). So in a twisted hilarious way, we actually DO have Sega (and their arcade rivals like Namco and even ATARI) to thank for the existence of PlayStation!
I was born in 2004, but I started out with an original xbox and ps2. my brothers were like 4 and I was 7-8. we also all had ds lites that got ran into the ground (only just recently got a 3ds) around 2013 was when we switched to an xbox 360 (never got a ps3) and so on. Im currently using my switch and xbox one the most. I always felt/feel a generation behind :p
PS1,2,3,4,5 combine for over 500M units sold. Imagine if Nintendo would have kept the deal to partner with Sony. Just think about that relationship with Nintendo focusing on their amazing games while letting Sony build them competitive hardware that would allow 3rd party studios to have stayed with Nintendo this whole time. Look at the GameCube, Wii, WiiU, and Switch eras where Nintendo was so far behind on hardware. GTA V has moved over 200M units... and what slice of that pie did nintendo get? Look at the CoD and Rainbow6 franchises... Microsoft and Sony took the lions share of those games as well because Nintendo couldnt. Not to mention Sony exclusives like the God of War franchise or Gran Turismo. With competent hardware and their first party franchises, Nintendo would have crushed the Xbox and continued to enjoy dominance in their 5th decade.
@@TheeBreadShow Yea, as of now I'd totally agree. Im more thinking about how the original xbox or 360 wouldve even gotten off of the ground if those NES titles has PS hardware behind them. Even now...imagine a Zelda game running on PS5 like the recent God of War. Same great play and story... but nothing holding it back.
Some advice from me: sometimes if you mess up what you say, its okay, you can retake. I noticed you messed up a few of the lines but you could easily retake that and it would improve the video
I went back and forth with ps1 and n64, kept trading at funcoland. Think I traded in the ps1 after playing 007 but eventually traded it back for ps1 again to play MGS.
If you're comparing the newest nintendo and PlayStation consoles (Switch and PS5) then I believe the Switch is better because it not only has more games and just better exclusive games and the Switch is better form factor. A lot of people I know who own a PS5 are just longing for more games.
The N64 had good games which I still have mine but looking back at it, it's a over hyped console, I got a Saturn years after that gen and enjoyed it much more, then the dreamcast was so good for the short time it was out, but between the PS1 and N64 it wasn't even close but I did love the GameCube, the wii was cool but more of a gimmick system lol but enjoyed those games
The N64 was obviously a flawed system with its poor third party support and its near complete lack of certain genre's (fighters, RPG's), but it was absolutely revolutionary for its time. The analog stick, rumble pack, four control ports, and full blown 3d games like Mario 64, Zelda OoT, and Goldeneye made it the system that most helped usher in the 3d era of gaming. The N64 library is limited compared to other great systems, but its impact on the industry is difficult to overstate, so I'm not sure I would call it overhyped. Also, I agree with you about the Saturn. I got that system immediately after it came out and it was my go to console for a good three years or so.
Considering the only playstation I own anymore is the ps2 I'd say nintendo won since I still own my n64, gamecube, wii, 3ds, and switch, I had ps3, ps4, and ps5 but it was just to play 3rd parties so I had no reason to keep them if you don't have any good 1st party games then there is no reason to own the console
This generation is dry with aaa games. There’s no reason to buy a PlayStation or Xbox. However, Nintendo has been bringing exclusive bangers to the switch. And guess what? The switch is less “powerful” than its competition
super mario rpg has nothing to do with Nintendo's and PlayStation relationship, they just simply made agreement with square Enix, it has nothing to do with the remake, they just wanted money
I disagree, Sony didn't "elevate" gaming otherwise they wouldn't be in the situation they're in right now. They basically money hatted their way to their position.
@@mr_m4613 They absolutely did. They aimed for larger than life experiences allowed by the appropriate tech (PS1 CD space, PS2’s ease to develop for) and catered a more cinematic audience that wanted more story depth and presentation without just prioritizing game design. Nintendo can be okay doing as much as they can with their software while asking less of their consoles. That’s a perfectly fine philosophy for themselves, but it obviously detracted 3rd parties who ditched Nintendo and went to Sony’s side to make their bigger games that allowed them to use their full imagination on. So of course they elevated gaming, the history clearly shows it.
@@miki49 Playstation are followrs not leaders. If they elevated gaming, everyone would be following them. Sony has 5 Playstations between generations, other than the outer shell of the console and some cosmetics you've been playing the same way for the last 25 years.
@@mr_m4613 Lol not how business works little bud. They pioneered and catered the larger gaming experience. It began with them, that was the philosophy that birthed them. There was no other company with that philosophy to “follow” back then. A company can’t just copy that and expect to be successful. Just look at how xbox is doing now. They can’t hold a candle to that same design philosophy. It wasn’t what brought them up, but they try hard to match it and continually fall short. You can pretend like Nintendo hasn’t done their same thing for years too. They had their own philosophy that hasn’t changed since the 80’s that I’ve already mentioned above. And there’s nothing wrong with that, it just is what it is. Why would a company lose sight of the original philosophy that made them and proved successful? I’m just here to bring the history and the facts, you can leave your one-sided fanboyism at the door. There’s a difference between having your camp and then spreading misinformation. There is no “following” what wasn’t there before you. Your words show a clear need to grow up. I recommend that you take that advice.
The switch is the b console just to a certain type of gamer. Nintendo's handhelds are just as mainstream as the Playstation brand. Every console genrration since the first Game Boy, a Nintendo handheld has always been the first or second bestselling system.
I have to side with playstation in terms of being the overall winner, even the existence of playstation is a net loss for nintendo since it is a demon they conjured up themselves.
N64 had like 16 good games lol. Ppl be hyping thid concole up with too much nostalgia. Nintendo was never any real compettion in PlayStation. Playstation had more games, more gems, and was more impactful. Games like resident evil, silent hill, metal gesr solid were just as impactful as zelda and Mario.
The saturn is the unsung arcade port king, but nobody cares because the redditors like the n64 (that console sucks) and the regular people like the ps1 (my beloved) Saying that the n64 has the best library is legitimately insane dawg most of those games suck and have aged like milk. Mario 64 is mid af, ocarina of time is okay, but majoras mask sucks, mario kart 64 is the 3rd worst one behind the original and gba games, 99% of 3rd party games are leaps and bounds inferior than the ps1/saturn versions of the same games or just straight suck unless youre mischief makers. Waverace and smash 64 are cool though, but thats it
Mario party as a series is the most boring shit of all time, pokemon is... well it's pokemon LMAO that shit dosent work. The ps1 has metal gear solid and symphony of the night, I dont have to say shit about the ps1 my beloved and saturn has the best versions of capcom's vs games, so it's better than n64 by default. Not trying to change your mind, the gamecube is a top 2 console for me, I love nintendo. i just fucking loathe the n64. One of if not the worst console I've ever played/own
