NAACP Director reacts to Sarah Huckabee Sanders' comments over AP African American Studies course 

If you feel uncomfortable learning about slavery, you’re supposed to.

It’s sickening how they can commit atrocities and then say we can’t talk about it.

I can see Huckabee being one of the students not wanting the 6 students to attend school it fits her persona .

I'm a product of an all black school in Arkansas and we were taught black history not to hate anyone but to be educated

children are innately compassionate, and learning about slavery would promote empathy, not division

Their history is our history be it Black, Native American, Chinese or Hispanic. A country of diversity, America.

As a 67 year old white women who is a retired educator it breaks my heart to see the destruction of our history. We are supposed to learn from it as not to repeat it! You can't sweep parts you don't like under a rug just so you can feel better. Our children need to learn from these horrible mistakes!! We are better than this. Praying we will respect each other and live with kindness for all human beings!

I was eleven years old when she walked into that high school. I remember the newspaper headlines about Eisenhower calling out the US ARMY to enforce the law. I saw it on the evening television news. I was baffled that anyone would deliberately keep anyone out of school. And now that fool in the governor's office thinks that you shouldn't teach my grandchildren (If I had any) about what happened in my childhood.

I have never seen a person wanting to change history. History is history. Facts can't be changed. This woman governor is an embarrassment and ignorant 😡

Minnie-Jean, I am probably your age, and a white woman and I also feel very sad and frustrated to see this country going backwards after all these years of what seemed like progress in civil rights. I pray we all get out to vote 💙💙💙💙and stop this horrible reactionary movement backwards. Keep your chin up...There many people on the side of equality, truth. and education about the true history of America which includes Black history, Native American history etc.

As an older (74) white woman, I learned about slavery, at least what was taught at the time, in school. It never made me hate my Black friends, and it never made me hate myself and other Whites. It made me feel uncomfortable, but I felt the same way about the treatment of Indigenous tribes by Whites. I learned not to tolerate hatred. I think I'm a better person because of it. I hope that I'm accepting of everyone. If you're a good person, that's what matters. All of this BS is ridiculous. History is history. You can't undo it, but you can learn from it, and, hopefully, keep it from repeating itself.

Sarah Sanders is exactly the kind of governor I knew she would be. Apparently Arkansas voters don't mind that her goal is 2 set their state back in the Dark Ages, including education.

Honestly, I can't believe how backwards this country is going. And it is a minority (white republicans) that is causing this sadness. It is important to know the true history of our country, good and bad, in order for us to go forward. I really feel, unless things change soon there is going to be a lot of regrets down the road.

This is horrifying! Growing up black in American schools I was always excited to see the section of our history books dedicated to black or African history only to be let down year after year when the teachers would rush through those chapters without actually teaching it.

I don't think there is enough black history taught in schools. There is so much rich culture and courage there. It's really fascinating and it's part of our culture.

It is absurd that we need to talk about this in 2023. Unfortunately we do. Thanks for this interview.

You can't be pro freedom and then take away the freedom to learn.

The very, very scary thing is that Huckabee's statement made in public and addressing a live audience was not challenged by the reporter, nor challenged by anyone else at that moment. In any other democracy this would not happen. Her statement would be challenged by the reporter/ tv station. Everywhere but Russia and China. What does that say about so-called American democracy??😢😢

It doesn’t make me sad. It makes me angry.

It’s sad that some of our countrymen are either so ashamed of our country’s past or they just don’t want a certain segment of the population to know their true history. One hand brings shame and the other will bring pride.

I hope that young people who interact with different races will grow stronger together.

Our governor in Arkansas , wants all minorities to stay in there place , she has given her plan for charter schools , and she has aplan for private schools , but she has no plan for the children left in public schools .

I grew up in an era of extreme whitewashing at a time when history was playing out on the TV screens of America. I soon caught on that what we were taught and the injustices I saw in the media made me want to learn the truth; with all its pain and injustice, not the “everything is sunshine and puppies” version we were fed. How can we be advocates or people of empathy if we’re not allowed to know what really happened?

Huckabee Sanders is an embarrassment to Arkansas, "Related factors include Arkansas ranking low in its percent of the population with college experience or a college degree, at 48 out of 51. This was the same ranking, 48th, for its percent of bachelor’s degree holders." SAY NO MORE but here is more, "WalletHub released a study Monday showing Arkansas ranks 47th as an educated state against the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The near-bottom ranking put it above only Louisiana, Mississippi and West Virginia." No wonder why Trump hired her to be his spokesperson.

We need more schools to go ahead and teach it. Don't back down. Please ftlog, DO NOT BACK DOWN!

My father when I was 12 made me watch a pbs unfiltered documentary about concentration camps. It was graphic and when I turned away he said look. Because he was German. He said this happened and it happened where my side if you came from. Never forget that while Germany created great things they did this too. Years later it disgusted me hearing people in Washington and on fox deny it ever happened. Just like the horrors of rosewood and tulsa. The superintendent of schools in Oklahoma denied tulsa was about race.

I remember learning about slavery in school and I remember as a child being extremely shocked. However it didn’t make me hate America but it made me realize that we have overcome slavery in America and we are moving in the right direction black history is American history.

Every university will be tripping over themselves to admit these students. Kids that take an extra AP level class that doesn't count towards graduation credit is committed to their education. Every University's dream.

Minniejean has been my heroine since the 57 crisis in Little Rock. She was/is so brave during her time at Central High because of her perceived expectation of what might happen positively in that very negative situation.

These (AP) African American history classes also teach about our accomplishments and contributions as well, guess they dont want that told either.

Back in the 1960's, my family moved south to Memphis. I was shocked to see restaurants with "white only" signs on them. Then there were the white restrooms and "colored" restrooms. There were separate water fountains as well. By the 1970's, these symbols of racism were gone, but not the racism itself. In the 1980's, whenever I mentioned segregation, I was told, "That didn't happen here." Didn't happen? I saw it!

Some people seem shocked by all the… let’s call it what it is, racism. The only difference between now and 30 years ago is that it’s okay to be proud about it. In their little worlds Trump allowed the quiet part to be no so quiet. These people have always been this way.

🇨🇦 canada teaches black history, such as the underground railroad, and it doesn't seem to have hurt their people. This is taught even in younger grades If anything I think it helps the people to come together with a better understanding. When you deny or change history, to suit your own agenda, you create nothing but havoc and chaos.

I love Ms Minnie-Jean's question: What kind of country do we want? I'm an old white lady who grew up not 20 minutes from where Maya Angelou started her life. It wasn't in school that I learned of that fact nor did I learn it timely. I learned it quite accidentally well into my adulthood. I was in my 60s before I learned about the Elaine, AR massacre. I wouldn't have known about that, either, if a dear friend of mine who is a well-read history buff hadn't educated me about that and other truths behind the propaganda and omissions in my education. As I did learn certain truths outside and after public school and even college, I felt infuriated, cheated, and deeply saddened. Delaying my learning the truth only furthered my participation, however unwitting, in furthering the lies. Let me tell you, I have experienced FAR more shame over my ignorance about what my fellow beloved citizens have had to endure AND some of my own unexamined, conditioned beliefs than I would have felt if I'd learned the truth at a much younger age. Children are, by definition, innocent. As such, I would have had nothing to feel ashamed about. In fact, learning about those white people who fought against racial oppression would have made me proud. Proud to find ways to count myself among their number rather than to later have to face my own history of complicity and the grief attached thereto. CRT is just an attempt to stop gas-lighting our kids. The Bible says, the truth shall set you free. Let's free our kids, all of them. I trust the skin on all our kids, from whitest to darkest, to be thick enough to handle it. In fact, I think they'd RUN with it. But, of course, that's what DeSantis & Huckabee, and all their ilk fear most, an empowered, educated, united populace.

When individuals face up to and learn from their mistakes they become better people. When a nation, like the US, does the same it becomes a better nation. America's racial history is tragic, but if we learn from it we will have a better future. You can't change the past, but you can learn from it to make a better future.

I can only go for my own experience as a white child learning about are woven histories. I never felt guilty, I only felt compassion with the sense that slavery should never be repeated. When you have a current congressman calling to bring lynching back what does Sarah have to say about that? I wonder what her thoughts on that are?
