NAC FerroMaster C456 & RTM Fox Vs TDK AR & Maxell UR - The Shootout!

The NAC FerroMaster C456 & RTM Fox are brand new cassettes. The NAC has been marketed as "the highest quality super ferric type I tape ever made."
So in this video I take a Nakamichi Dragon and compare the NAC C456 with a classic Super Ferric, the TDK AR and see who it fares. I also compare with the RTM Fox and the humble, but widely available, Panggung made Maxell UR.
CASSETTE DECK USED: Nakamichi Dragon

That review is gonna anger a lot of people, especially those who said that the NAC tape sounded great and that the UR was rubbish. Only ONE guy on said forum said they were crap and returned them for a refund. There was one well known and well respected ex employee of BASF who was screaming that this is no superferro, yet he was pretty much ignored. Tony, the only thing you didn't consider in your analysis was that we have a very good cassette duplicator based here in the UK, and they will no doubt be getting hold of some of that NAC pancake, thus making them available in the UK at a very fair price. Many thanks for your "no bullshit" review, you Sir have earned my respect and trust.
@CassetteComeback

Sure, there will be UK loaders that will be selling the NAC tape, but in reality there are so many D, UR, FE etc out there for a similar price I can't see who is going to buy them except for duplication purposes. It is what it is. I want to encourage sales of these cassettes, but I also have to be honest. I can't say they're something they're not. I expect a backlash, but my conscience is clear.

The UR cassettes from Maxell from about 1985 and up are quite good, and had decent quality than this one. I have so many cassettes from various brands like TDK, Maxell, Memorex, Fuji, Ampex, etc. Certron cassettes are kinda cheap than this one since it was “Made in Hong Kong”. Certron has the best design that you can get from the 70’s and 80’s with the wavy lines. I have a couple of Ampex cassettes that dates back to the 70’s and it sounded decent for recording, and so did others like knockoff brands that were “Made in Hong Kong” and “Made in China” that are quite cheap.

@L Greene: You're not wrong! Those Maxell UR tapes are great - even on my 90's Technics twin-deck RS-TR575...using the auto callibration function, they record well, and play-back very nicely (just don't push them above the 0db point on the meters!). I have an early 90's Yamaha 3-head coming in a couple of days so I look forward to seeing how they perform on that too...!! It's nice to know that there is at least one 'name brand' manufacturer out there still, and Maxell were always a top brand! ;-)

Great review here Tony, but not all of us Audiophiles go around judging other people’s equipment one way or the other. For me it’s about the music first, last and always. The equipment is just a means to that end. I like the fact that you use different decks to do different things with. The Maxell UR are quite good for what they are and a great analogy of being careful of what you wish for. I love the TDK AR, have it and they are fabulous.

If I were a musician and had NAC duplicate my album on their new tape and it sounded like it did at 31:29 I would have sent them all right back saying they were defective. This tape a big disappointment considering all the hype NAC gave it. But I do hope NAC and RTM continue to improve their tapes to be super-ferric quality so we can get something we wished for. I can't understand if the NAC TAPE is just bad or it is damaged or bad cut. The problem with bad tapes is usually felt through distortion, which it's got plenty of... but it's also got lots of dropouts. And this to me indicates tape degradation or worse, bad formula or deposition. I don't believe that's how a mediocre tape should sound, it's worse.

@CassetteComeback
@CassetteComeback 5 лет назад
@@AnthonyStone-dn9ym Unless you know what you're doing with maintenance, there are 3 things you need to focus on when buying a deck: 1. Condition 2. Condition 3. Condition :-) I'd rather have a lower spec deck, that has come from the original owner and has been looked after, than a TOTL deck that's been bought from a house clearance with an unknown past. As regards to 3 headers, honestly, never met a bad one. Out of preference, look for ones which have a "bias" and a seperate "level" knob as these will allow you to manually adjust the level and bias. Better ones, have in build tones and a visual display, so you know you've got it right. Others have auto cal, but personally, I prefer VU meters and my ears. The bargains are the late Aiwa 3 headers in my book, like my AD-S950. Aiwa is perceived as cheap, even tough they were owned by Sony at this time. They are late, so low usage, but also not prized as vintage...this means they go for great prices. I even managed to change the belts in mine, which is all that needed doing to it, as they're eady to work on. Yes, they don't sound like a Dragon, but then again nothing else does. All I know is that I've recorded hundreds of cassettes in my Aiwas and it was trouble free, with great results....and my favourite portables are Aiwa too. Very underrated brand. You want something that weighs a ton, go buy some bricks :-)

I buy from tape manufacturers here in America that use NAC tape stock. I can get them for less than $1 each when I buy them in bulk and can buy it from one seller in any length up to 110 minutes. Not quite as good as the Maxell UR cassettes but they’re cheap. Sometimes as little as $20 per 25. Just goes to show how economies of scale make technology more affordable.

Great video and comparison, Tony. I've watched all your videos, and I have to agree with most of what you say. However something which really struck me was when you were testing the benchmark UR at around the 26:40 mark, the pitch of the tape drops ever so slightly so the melody sounds slightly detuned by a few Hz for around 10 seconds until the main beat comes in. Comparing it to the NAC tape which you did at the lower level just a minute before, there wasn't this phenomenon. Just wondering why the UR did that...
@CassetteComeback
@CassetteComeback 5 лет назад
Well, the UR are ultimately last of line, at this stage could be using Acme tape, so the odd Inconsistency is to be expected. Either that or the RU-vid compression has played with it.

That NAC was horrible. I listened with a headphone and I heared a lot of small dropouts, it's sound a if the tape was wrinkled a bit. This is also why the calibration wasn't very stable I think. A TDK D sounds better in my opinion. The RTM was fine, matches a D pretty close
@Lenny-kt2th
@Lenny-kt2th 5 лет назад
Agreed. New tapes were nice and smooth and developed lines in them with multiple playback cycles. If you tried rerecording a well used tape, lots of dropouts were the result. The NAC looks and sounds like it's far from a new tape...

I was about to say the NAC's sounded good enough, then I heard that last test and wow that was a lot of distortion. I can't believe that. I hope it's a problem they solved in the year since this was conducted, but I fear they will not have. Thank you for this review. I had read discussions on tapeheads and just now have viewed your entire video. I think the real problem is NAC's extravagant claims that their ferromaster c456 is the absolute greatest super ferric tape ever made, when it just isn't so. One aspect of your review which might have made it more useful would be using a single-capstan deck which is more typical of the drive mechanism used in most home audio systems than the Nak Dragon's super-sophisticated twin-capstan transport. Dual-capstan transports tend to overcome flaws in cassette assembly quality more than the commonplace single-capstan drives. While I wish the great blank tapes of the '80s were for sale in retail stores, in my experience the widely-available Maxell UR is competent and fairly good sounding. RTM's Fox is a hair better, and I hope over time it becomes more widely distributed and the price might come down slightly due to competition (but RTM, please don't reduce the quality).
@CassetteComeback
@CassetteComeback 5 лет назад
I used the dragon because I wanted to give it a chance to show it's best. Yes, the hyperbole from NAC was the reason I'm down on these. They just plain lied. They're now talking about so many improvements to the revised formula, that it makes their original claims look even more stark.

I saw it at Walmart and they are the ONN branded blank cassettes that they’re still making them today. When I saw it, it had no label, no brand, no length, no bias info, nothing. Only sides A and B printed. Why not make a custom cassette label. Go through Google, look for a cassette label that are so obscure from the 70’s and 80’s, printed it out, and stick ‘em in, and you make a custom blank cassette. Or you can slap a Compact Cassette logo on other custom variants to make sure that the name we all know and love for every generation.

In the last tape, while you are setting the bias, there are very audible drops in the continuous sine wave signal. No surprise the results are poor, to say the least. This is a problem of the tape coating formula and/or the substrate. Maxell's UR are far better, as it was obvious in your video dedicated to it, running not in the Dragon, but in the more humble Aiwa (with the misleading title "The most boring cassette in the world").

I have a batch of C120 cassettes in my collection, and it still plays on my cassette deck or recorders, and one thing about the C120, when I was looking at the original owner's manual that it will not play C120 cassettes, because it will stretch or break. @@CassetteComeback I thought the Cobalt tape did ok once I got my deck biased properly... I got a pack of 10 for $90 cdn shipped, so a bit on the pricey side. I wouldn't call them exotic or great, but they are what I would consider passable. And I think they compare well and exceed many old unused type 1 I have including the good maxell 60s. They do quite well if I do a bit of basic companding. Ithink if you are trying to achieve the highest of qualities, then these will not cut it. They really do have their weaknesses. But I am a little forgiving of them, as when I am in need of some serious fidelity in analog recording, I use my Teac Simulsinc 4 track on 456. So my needs in recording on CC are a little more modest. They sound good in my car, so that is good for me. Now, to be fair, sometimes I can get NOS type 2 maxell or tdk tapes here in canada for a killer price, but not always. So that makes the 756 a bit of a tough sell. As I don't think its as good as either of the other two at their best. So I can agree the value proposition is not really there. I have been satisfied with my purchase of 756's and was happy enough to front the cash to try them out, though I will probably not buy the 756 10 pack again. I've got it sounding OK and I've recorded some material on it. I was contemplating buying a case of NAC C456 tapes. This is good information. Do you know of a source for calibration tapes used to setup tape decks? Someone in the past has twiddled the trim pots on this K960. I suspect this because the left channel was inoperative and I discovered this was because one of the trim pots on the left channel output amp was pegged. Bringing it back toward the center fixed it. Fantastic review, I love your work sir! As far as the humble 'UR' goes, I personally think they are great but their image is marred by very poor cosmetic appearance. This will make lots of people er….. BIASED against them. I see NAC now have a '799 SuperChrome' TYPE II tape listed as Studio Master grade: www.nationalaudiocompany.com/product-category/audio-cassette-tapes/799-studio-master-super-chrome-cassettes Although this appears to be old stock tape of some sort.

They are made in France but if you don’t want to pay the shipping and wait a month you can find them on ebay for sale by those who have already imported them but be aware they are super expensive. In the states I suggest the Sony HF and TDK D (the older D not newest with the slogan play it loud). AVOID the newer UR’s on Amazon. Bought a pack of three and two of them were damaged. On the one that worked it would not bias on my Sony three-head and distorted badly pushing barely 0 dB so clearly the UR’s of the final generation had quality control issues. You can tell the newer gen UR from ones in the 90’s as the hubs were solid from NOS of the 90’s. Also the ones from then also had the guard under the pressure pad. Newer ones do not.

Well... I believe manufacturers don't understand the true extent of profits for High Bias cassettes: try an eBay search for a NOS TDK SA-XS. But the worst part is the... "maintenance" of good cassettes. If the tape in one of my "golden" SA-X is damaged or degraded, which is very likely each passing year, what do I do? Would you put CDing II tape in it? They don't compare. I am not going to kill a modern SA to give back life to the old SA-X. So... I wait, in the meantime I plug the Type II holes in the SA-X, get the (still good) tape out of a battered TDK D and spool it onto the SA-X hubs, besides they can be swapped directly as the hubs are quite similar. Not that you wouldn't notice but I apply a sticker label TDK D TAPE on it. The moment I find some critically injured shell with good Type II tape I'll replace it but it's a lost bet to begin with. I have several top brand empty shells in my collection, but no high quality Type II tapes for them.

You stick to much on design, today in 2020 people can buy brand new Cassette Deck from TEAC-TASCAM great brand in audio industry from Japan AND New Cassette from RTM, RTM from France is in the audio tape field for decades, they parent company buy all old staff from AGFA and BASF, formula, patents, rights... to make new Cassette Tape in 2020, sound in this video is proof that RTM Fox C60 is one of the best Normal Positon tape out there, new TEAC deck and new RTM compact cassette and analog is in full power. Its not right to say old Nakamishi is better than new TEAC, Nakamichi is gone, Maxell, TDK... do not make tapes any more, if any one want to support analog audio on compact cassette, please support Teac from Japan and RTM from France, regards.

That NAC screams 'old stock'. Symptoms of old tape that has not been stored properly. The scratched frame? Maybe an old one. They go to cheap to call it a scam, but it fails to deliver. The fox? It thook the german importer 3 weeks but I finally could test them. What do I think of it? Better enough than TDK D, marginally better than Maxell UR. But both are C90 tapes, this C60 is double the price of a UR and has half a tape less to put music on that sounds a bit better? Oh and an unplesant surprise: while I was sitting in my chair, the box of one of the fox tapes, slipped of my lap on the carpet. This bumb on carpet was enough to brake the box! It's a brittle old skool thin plastic box, the Ds and UR comes with much better boxes! So yes the FOX is good enough but for the money it can't compete with the UR...
@CassetteComeback
@CassetteComeback 5 лет назад
I agree. The bottom line is, is like I say in this video. People don't want new cassettes as such, they just want new cassettes to affect the price of the vintage NOS cassettes they really want. The fox is decent, but at the price cheaper NOS cassettes sell many times more.

@@CassetteComeback If the FOX would get into supermarkets and big department stores like Saturn/MediaMarkt they should get a fair chance of economical survival, if the walkman and cassette revival goes big enough among teens, I can see 16 year old ones pay 3 to 4 euro for a tape they can record their vinyl on for playback on their faux vintage walkman. I think Alan Parsons summed up Audiophiles best when he said: "Audiophiles don't use their equipment to listen to your music. They use your music to listen to their equipment" I listen to a lot of brand new music. Music that hasn't been made by professionals. Made by people in their bedrooms and home studios. Some of it isn't mastered well. Some is only available as MP3...but if the song itself is fantastic, I don't care. Like I say, I'd rather listen to a bad recording of a fantastic song, than a fantastic recording of a bad song. The music itself is the most important thing to me.

@@CassetteComeback Well, I know it depends on the definition. I do know people that will indeed only listen to stuff that makes their equipment shine. Even when they really don't like the music. I really really don't get that! I prefer to listen to everything that I like. Whether that is in 112 kbit mp3 or 24/192 flac. Obviously, if I have the choice, I'll choose the one that sounds the best (if both choices are the same). But yeah, I have plenty of people who don't understand why I have 2 cassette decks to listen to music. 'It will sound inferior'. Well, depends on how you look at it... However, someone like Steve Guttenberg ('The Audiopheliac') calls someone who does dedicated listening (just listen, nothing else) an audiophile. Regardless of the equipment or the source. That would sound more realistic to me. And that would probably include a lot of people who don't like audiophiles, because they would suddenly one themselves ;) Weird one this.. Still: listen to anything on anything: check. Prefer a good sounding system and cassette deck: check.
