Frederica von Stade sings the closing aria from Rossini's Cenerentola. Conducted by Claudio Abbado, from a cinematic production directed by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, 1981.
This is the best. I've listened to a few and others sound like they are so proud of themselves for singing all the technical stuff they forget to act. She mixes artistry and technicality perfectly. And her upper and lower register are natural and smooth.
Her registers are so perfectly blended so her legato is smooth and her coloratura like butter! The character abandons potential resentment for a purity of loving intention-it’s a spiritual ascension. Utterly unique in opera! Kudos to Rossini, and to his peerless interpreter!
@@ferrocinque3938 I'm not a fan of Bartoli's Cenerentola. I think Sonia Ganassi is better. But the best Cenerentola ever must have been Giulietta Simionato and Fedora Barbieri, in my opinion.
Totally agree with everyone who said this is the best Cenerentola ever! It has everything - gorgeous singers (both in looks and vocals), beatiful production, wonderful Rossini's music and the best conductor for it. A treasure for generations.
stupid as f**k i guess... the best cenerentola of all time is by far Cecila Bartoli: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qVZNx39xYiA.html thats a fact by 99% of all experts in the world
I do think that von Stade is one of the best Angelina's on record. She has all the elements that you would have wanted for the role: looks, charm, a natural and beautiful tone. One may criticize her coloratura technique but she is more than capable of singing the ornaments :)! In short, she is wonderful ^)!
The ultimate and unsurpassed performance directed by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle. Even more than 30 years later fascinating and fresh. The beautiful, radiant and charming Frederica von Stade as Cenerentola on the peak of her career. Her smooth mezzo sounds wonderful. Francisco Araiza is equally excellent; he is one of the best Rossini-tenors ever. Simply great and perfect singing, acting and music. Pure Perfection.
I remember watching this for the first time and tearing up; bringing forward genuine emotion in a Rossinian opera is a great feat for contemporary productions which both Frederica and Ponnelle deserve the utmost respect for achieving with this version.
Bella, bella, bellísima... como siempre. Espléndida, adorable, encantadora, dulcísima... como siempre. Verla y escucharla: puro placer.
Bel-Ami Margoles :: You're right ! This opera is about Goodness and von Stade is really sweet & forgiving. I was never a fan of her voice but here she is lyrically beautiful. If it were me, I would have had the sisters beheaded as soon as my Coronation was over ! 😆
Not only great technique, but one of the nicest people you could to meet. I saw a recital of hers at Pick-Staiger Hall in Eveanston, Il back in the early 80s and got to meet her afterwarrd. Charming, and gorgeous.
I always loved Frederica Von Stade's voice in all the many years I have been an avid opera lover. I also enjoyed the many roles that she sang especially Mozart's Le Nozze Di Figaro and La Ceneretrola. She has a special warmth to the role that she sung over the many years.
Lovely! She has a vulnerability and sweetness in her voice that is captivating. Bartoli is wonderful in a different way. Less fragile and more ebullient. I like her tough spirit.
god I love fredericas voice sounds effortless and has a lovely timbre and she looks lovely when she sings not all contorted and strange facial expressions like bartoli and erraught so elegant and sweet no one compares
Well you can say that, which I agree entirely concerning Great Frederica von Stade, without having to create intrigue and hate to another great great artist. Each have their own crucial role. Music is after all not about looking at pretty faces. Although it may be sometimes, when possible, a nice recent add to it.
I agree they are both great artists, but I think you are overreacting to criticism of Bartoli. Saying someone makes faces (expressing emotion) is not at all equivalent to 'hate' directed toward that person. I think we need to be kinder and gentler to one another on the internet. Please kiss and make up.
I LOVE mezzo-sopranos the best, and Rossini's La Cenerentola is my most favorite opera. I was lucky enough to meet Frederica von Stade in person after a recital she gave in Hampton, VA in May, 2003. She was so gracious and friendly. I had just seen her do The Merry Widow at the Met with Placido Domingo a few months before. (I gave her a framed snap shot of the Merry Widow curtain call I'd taken.) I'll always remember meeting her.
I LOVE this aria/ending. It is so beautiful. I think Frederica does a great job and really embodies Cenerentola. I think Francisco Araiza is a brilliant prince also :). I literally have watched this version of the aria 20+ times.
¡¡¡La Adorable Flica; Exquisita Cantante y Actriz. Siempre Maravillosa!!!
Gorgeously sung, beautifully acted, and sumptuous to see. Going to look for the full production next. Reminded me of the Washington Opera production I did years ago as a part of the mens chorus.
Love this film of Cenerentola - and love von Stade. She is absolutely stupenda. Only one who's better here? Lucia Valentini-Terrani (God rest her beautiful soul!). Too bad there's only a really crappy video of Lucia doing this at youtube.
kudos to Ponnelle and the producers for making those great productions possible. This Cenerentola, Ponnelle/Abbados Barbiere version with Berganza, Alva and Prey and the Ponnelle/Böhm Nozze with Prey, Fischer-Dieskau, Te Kanawa and Ewing are the Gold Standard for the respective operas.
Emily Greene Gee, thanks for knowing better than me. I guess my having a very successful international career in opera doesn’t qualify me to know what I’m stating. And I guess having sang with Flicka also does not qualify me to have an opinion based on my first hand experiences. You obviously are much better informed being a successful professional singer yourself.
Flicka is a lyric mezzo and will be officially retiring this year. I was so lucky to have been present at her-accidental- Met debut and to have heard her in recital last year. She is a gracious and lovely off stage as on.
