So, it's literally more than the sum of its parts! I do hope its less expensive sibling is as well, because I have one that's still in the box, waiting for me to gird my loins and pluck up the courage to set it up. I've never owned a turntable that needed to be set up, so I'm procrastinating like a good 'un, wishing there was a video on the subject.

Yet again you throw a degree of conflict into the mix and quite rightly so my rega p3 seems somewhat at odds with your assessment of the nad tern tables interesting to know your dislike of glass type platers alas the price point I’m limited to prevents me from going any further down the hifi road but am fully aware that if funds were available improvements could be achieved great respect to you and your Chanel keep well and safe Kind regards Mike in the U.K.

Do you have any thoughts in regards to belt drive turntables using a belt around a sub platter as opposed to having the belt around the circumference of the platter? Which do you feel would have a more stable rotation? Thank you.
@TheAudiophileMan
@TheAudiophileMan 3 года назад
Hi Mike - in broad terms, I'd point to other factors to give you that stability because it depends how those design points have been implemented, parts used, etc. I wouldn't say sub platters are better/worse per se. There are pros and cons for both.

The C588 would be a good choice. That arrives with an Ortofon 2M Red which would be good to get you going. A Project MM phono amp for around £65 would be a good addition. The amp? Possibly a Cambridge AXA35 (£279) plus Q Acoustics 3020i (£200) would go well together. Grab the best QED cabling you can afford.

Re VTA - yes it can. Even less people compare tonearms :) That was the point of the video, as you can see by my cartridge comments. That was more of a priority than a cart comparison. Looking at the same cart on different decks is a review of a cartridge not a turntable. This was a NAD C588 review.

I'm in the mid budget price bracket for each hifi separate part and totally into the listening experience of music on vinyl. My listening is more 60's, 70''s and 80's rock and maybe later....but especially the music of The Beatles. I haven't had vinyl music playing in my house since the early 1980's. I still have all my vinyl, originally bought, starting from 1969/70 and onward. Most of this vinyl is in very good condition still. I also have all of the remastered Beatles canon on vinyl, stereo and mono. I want to listen to this music on my original vinyl and the new vinyl, but I haven't any equipment!! I would like to spend, as you describe, in the mid price budget maybe towards the upper price budget. So I need good advice. Turntable, speakers and amplifier and from the audiophile point of listening. I would appreciate your learned advice and with what you recommend, maybe an alternative choice to give me flexibility a little. Hopefully you can help me, no worries if you can't, thanks.

Yes, you're right - that must have changed when I wasn't looking because my review sample (it's been here in my office for a little while I must admit) came with a 2M Black as standard. Another review that seems to make no sense look at the two arms on those two turntables that you say are so different one is S shaped the other straight and they seem to have the same bearings with a different counterweight I had the RPM 3 and I can assure you that the tonal balance was incredible also you can move the tone up and down to the preferred sound of the music that you prefer!!!! There are so many variables that go into a turntable built even the same model some times sounds different and what about the cables you use and the base that you put the turntable on I can go on and on but your definitive approach to these two turntables is ridiculous🤔😮✌

I did audition this turntable a liitle while ago. It was hooked up to highend NAD amps and some great Dali speakers. In fact those amps and speakers were way to expensive for this turntable, so to speak. To make a long story short, the NAD C588 disappointed me in a big way. Maybe it was due to the cart, the Ortofon 2M Red? In any case, it sounded bad compared to my vintage turntables (Dual 704 and a ToshibaSR 370).

Paul, in the video you said that you hate the glass platter on this and the Regas, is that a general impression or specific to these models/brands. The reason i ask is that the Funk Firm LSD which you've reviewed(currently in the running for my next TT) has a glass platter. Wondering if you care to share more about this or is this something one can mitigate with a proper matt such as the Achromat?
@TheAudiophileMan
@TheAudiophileMan 4 года назад
Hi Hooman - choosing a glass platter is done because of price and knowing its drawbacks. There are good points to a glass platter, sure, but there are downsides and that's where the mat comes in. Every manufacturer has its own ides on this but possible solutions are governed by the build budget. Which is why Rega and NAD utilise a felt mat. The Funk solution is better but its mat is also way more expensive because of the higher price point from the LSD, for example, which has a larger build budget.

I don't know man every NAD turntable that I've ever had and I've had a couple I've had this one and I had the previous one based on the planar one turntable from rega. Regardless though I found that I was always quite dissatisfied with NAD's offerings in this product segment. And you might say that well why did you keep buying them if you were dissatisfied and the answer of course is that I also have they're amplifiers and CD players and streaming products and I always been tremendously satisfied with those offerings. So eventually I gave up on their turntables and decided instead to buy a Michell gyro dec

The Audiophile Man the nad is now at a pretty good price at sevenoaks. Would you kindly elaborate a bit more on why you think the nad would be better? Tonearm? Thanks!
@TheAudiophileMan
@TheAudiophileMan 4 года назад
A combination of parts and how they're put together. The Rega is not an amazing turntable across the board, as a whole design. What makes it brilliant is its arm. The arm carries everything else over the line, as it where. For the NAD, that arm is also excellent - it's the difference between the 558 and the 588. Nothing else but the arm - well, the arm tube and headshell, to be specific. All great budget turntables have a brilliant arm, the Funk Firm Gett! turntable which I'll be reviewing on my channel in the future, is another one (and the best of the bunch [quick preview for you there]). The NAD is tops for me here because of the other ingredients that push the whole turntable onwards.

The Audiophile Man that’s fantastic advice and starting to feel really confident about the nad. What i like about it as well is the fully adjustable tonearm making it easy to adapt to other cartridges. Do you think this tt would make justice to a good MC cartridge? Say a denon dl103?

Hi there! Sorry for the late update. Yes I did upgrade the needle cartridge of my NAD turnable to an Ortofon 2M Black. Yes, it was nice but after almost a year of listening my LP's, I got the MC bug bite, so I order an Ortofon Quintet red, and oh boy what a diference, the whole thing opened up. I am so happy of my decision even with the waist of my M2 black now resting on its original box. I think in part was the option of my ELEKIT TU-8500 pre-amp MM/MC switch that encouraged me to try the Quintet. But the entire system sounds much better now. Video coming up!! I promise.

The Rega planar 3 with Audio Technica Cartridge AT VM 95 SH still sounds better to me in the mid range. Voices are more velvet like.
