whereismyxanax I love Nadia more than any female gymnast. She is neither humble nor confident after the 1976 Olympics. She may or may not be the greatest of all time. As a female, she is. But she is short of the genius of Kohei Uchimura, who won everything single AA in Worlds and Olympics for 6 years in a row. That is IMPOSSIBLE. No one can ever match that again, and future. Especially with all those event specialist who won't challenge him in the AA, but with the specialist with over 7,0 SV, no way can Kohei win medals in the EF as easy as say Scherbo when specialist are not allowed. .But unlike Scherbo's time, when there are no specialist(all gymnasts have to do all 6 events. There is no way Kohei can win more medals on all events when he is the greatest AA of all time. But he is not like many event specialist who only do one event. How is it possible to beat a HB specialist who only practice one events when Kohei has to do all 6 events instead of one? THINK LOGIC.
@@vettegaddia6234 Nadia is the greatest! Whether you like it or not the 1st one to attain a perfect score The judges knew it The crowd knew it Accept it and get over it I forgive you
Olga Korbut was a great gifted athlete at her time but listening to her on this clip immediately reminds me of the film “whatever happened to baby Jane” and I think her bitterness comes from the fact that she was a diva and she was not prepared to loose her crown. Comaneci is a symbol of tenacity and perfection, beauty and grace it is impossible not to be amazed by her accomplishments
She's not bitter or like 'baby Jane' at all. Maybe defiant and annoyed and also honest. You'd be too if people came up to you and always talked about Nadia.
I'm the same age as Nadia, I remember watching her on TV back in those days. Just beautiful movements, she was absolutely amazing. Look at what she does at 7:00 mins to 7:30 mins, completely clears the first bar, how can that be possible? Totally awsome, no wonder the russians were so upset...
Hugh Jengin Yeah, right...some of you think Ludmilla is competitive with Nadia doing no real flight elements on beam, and a single layout comparing to Nadia's double back on FX. That is the biggest travesty in the history of gymnastics. She was also along with Nelli Kim to overscore their Mother Russia gymnast and cheated the AA, the EF, TF which is very unfair. Back to 1976, at least Olga and Nelly Kim did some difficult skills. Athough they are nothing next to the Queen of female gymnastics, Nadia. Ludmilla's skills are 10 years behind and the MOST OVERSCORED GYMNAST IN THE HISTORY OF GYMNASTICS. I KNOW THAT IS A BIG STATEMENT. BUT LOOK AT HER ROUTINES. A SINGLE LAYOUT WITHOUT EVEN A SIMPLE TWIST IS MORE IMPRESSIVE THAT A DOUBLE BACK? NO WAY!!!!!
It's hard to argue against that. Although Nelly Kim won 2 individual gold in '76, and Nadia won 2 individual gold in '76, too, so maybe it's difficult to argue that Nelly is inferior to Nadia. Two "bests"?
@@pedestrianrights1257 wining medals isn't the only thing that makes someone the best. You also have to look at things like innovation, consistency and difficulty level. Someone "getting a medal" for an easier program done well isn't the same as someone "getting a medal" for doing a harder program well. Nadia was also the only person to hit the triple crown
@@takerkellygiveusbacktupac617 lmao, then again, "getting a medal" isn't the same thing as "getting a GOLD medal". I think you lost sight of what i said. I was comparing GOLD medals. In order to win a GOLD, you don't do "an easier program". right?
Stacey - You are looking at her comments as if she meant them today. What I see in her demeanor is that she is talking about and relating how she felt about Nadia back then, when SHE was the kid, when she was considered a "queen" at home, and when she was competing at the same time as Nadia. The Soviet gymnasts who were successful were not only built up by their coaches, but were considered "heroes of the Soviet Union" at home. It was their time for "fame," and they enjoyed every minute of it, and were even given perks for their success, like their own apartment, for instance. Now, along comes someone like Nadia - from a country basically ruled by the Soviet Union - and that pokes a hole in their bubble. Now, they are expected to perform as well, defeat the little upstart, and they lose their status as the "Soviet darling" if they can't do it. They are worked harder, worked longer, are punished in various ways, threatened and may even lose their rewards. Very often, their families often suffered right along with them. So, I don't think she means her comments in the way people are perceiving them. She is talking about her reactions as that Soviet-controlled kid.
Stacey, Olga is a bit of full of herself, I suppose, but it's right to which she's entitled since she revolutionised an entire sport and eased tension between the USA and the Soviet Union.
@@tacksscherbo7771 absolutely untrue. Olga was a damn pretentious athlete Her teammates didn’t like, her own coach hated working with her Olga needed a few more smacks across the face to learn humility Olga has always been self-centered It’s been about fame and money But she’s paid a high price for her lack of respect and selfishness She has a criminal useless son She auctioned her medals bc she’s broke Tried to coach and failed miserably Was arrested for shoplifting These are the actions and outcomes of someone that expects the world to vow down Humility and respect get you way ahead
@@cc_celeste I don't think you understood my comment in the manner it was intended regarding most of the Soviet gymnasts. I was not defending Olga specifically, but attempting to interject some understanding regarding how and why some of their attitudes arose . If what you say is true about her misfortune, I feel some measure of sympathy for her because she was not trained or educated in any other skill where she could earn a reasonable living when her body gave out. No doubt she was not wise enough not to count on a lot of promises made regarding her future comfort. And because I have children of my own, and they already have their own children, I keep my mouth off other people's families because you never know how your own will turn out.
I saw Olga AND Nadia’s original routines, in real time. Both were extremely mesmerizing! But I was impressed by ALL of the Soviet block’s gymnasts. However, what I did appreciate about Nadia, especially for me as a child, was her FOCUS! This girl had a laser focus that STILL inspires, in my opinion. Although, I will say, it is good to see her smile, in this video, because her childhood expression seemed to express oppression despite her focused perfection. She instilled in me, an American, a form of being focused and achieving your best and THEN you can do all of the smiling.
I did't think olga was so envious respect with nadia.... Her comments are very selfish and hateful. Nadia did the things very well beyond all odds, unless she never included a news skills she's the best permorfer at the history of the gymnastics. Olga included two new skills but her rutines didn't have power and force like nadia.
Roman Real I love Olga. But of course she was jealous of Nadia. Nadia's was about 2 years ahead of the rest of the field in difficulty if not 4 years. Really, she had several E skills done in 1976 that few can do today. She was doing double back in the first and last pass on a NO spring floor mat when few of her biggest rivals can barely do a single full twist.
I don't agree that Nadia's skills were 2 years ahead. Maybe the dismount off the asymetric bars, yes. But let's face it : others were doing the so called Comaneci salto too at Montreal and before, Mariana Constantin , at Montreal, Elena Davydova at the American Cup and Karin Janz at Munich. Annelore Zinke was doing that and the Radochla at the 1974 world championships. Caslvaska also did the Radochla and Antonina Koshel did it as a mount. Nadia's full turn wasn't new either. Kuchinskaya and Tourischeva did it.
@@lokismig She was athletically innovative, but graceless on beam, bars. (To me) She was inconsistent, did little more than open a door. I respect her, but her attitude tarnishes her legacy.
She was so gracefull..did it so effortlessly. I miss that! It's all so fast and full of tricks now some of it looks so sloppy. I mean yes they are all muscled up now and indeed talented but I miss the older more feminine way. Look how elegant they were.
,I knew that Olga had a very special personality ,but I didn't expect this commentaries ,I mean ,at least I thought that she was more professional with Nadia,...what a disappointment olga!
Olga never accomplished anything worth to remember aside her disastrous bars in '72 and her mediocre '76 performance.Very bitter and jealous! "Who's Nadia?" On the other side Ludmilla has showed class and and credits Nadia for really changing gymnastics forever.
At school I used to hâte thé gym. We did a little bit of basic kid skills gymnastic and that even terrified me so I skipped most of it...until thé senior year of highschool and I didn't have a choice since the physical test got you more score .. so I told my dad how much I hâted it and he just Saïd go google Nadia comeneci .. it changed my perspective completely and I did a good routine and according to thé judges the smoothest and most graceful one they have seen..it was all Nadia's influence ..
Both Nadia Comaneci and Olga Korbut are great gymnasts, in my opinion. Both of them have made a revolution in the gymnastics. Nowadays it's really rare to see such performances! 👍💪 P. S. In the comments I feel a real prejudiced attitude to Russians. It makes me sad.(
I think it's more that girls that are built that way are better suited to the sport, but there are a lot of exceptions, Viktoria Komova, Anastasia Grishina, Ana Porgras (retired), Deng Linlin, Sui Lu, and a whole lot of others. But in the USA the top gymnasts are more powerfully built generally.
There’s no way Bela thought that Nadia had received such massive reductions and received a 1 as her score. There’s just no way. He’s just making that up for stupid effect
THE NUMBER 1.OO is flashed across the board...specatators officials and gymnasts alike are confused...none more than garry hixon as nadia comaneci..the first perfect ten ever achieved....
Nadia is a legend but she's also lucky that Elena or Yelena Mukhina was injured and couldn't compete because of a broken leg and she later broke her neck and got paralyzed thanks to the pressure of the coaches and "the honor of the country" R.I.P sweet Elena!
@@angrygrizzly9008 Nadia was lucky. Ludmilla was tired and on the verge of retirement and Olga too was old in gymnastic terms and overworked. Had Elena been there in 1976 she'd have beat Nadia no doubt . You say Nadia beat Elena more?? At the Europeans Nadia was first. But what's that in comparision to being world champion??? Just a minor competition. Nadia was never a world cup or world champion.
I don't 'get' the 'this gymnast vs that gymnast'. BOTH Olga and Madia were amazing gymnasts, with different styles and flare. It shouldn't be one over the other.
@@leightonsteven7059 -Agreed! After the shell shock wore off Nellie just proceeded to get a "10" on the vault. But, Nellie and Ludmilla had no response to Nadia on the Beam and Uneven Parallel's....
@@atiboyful I never liked Nadia mania , and much preferred Nellie, but have to concede that I’ve never seen such fluidity on the beam before, and rarely since.
Everyone's noticed this. The problem comes from the Code of Points which is the judging system of gymnastics. Every four years it changes (every Olympic cycle) and every four years the Code asks for more difficult and complex skills and combinations to get a high score, especially now they've got rid of the Perfect 10. So rather than get a skill perfectly and beautifully it'll score more points to go for the super difficult power moves. They get you the gold medals.
Nadia is my girl!! Love her. It's so interesting to see Teodora, Nelli Kim, and Olga on here too. So impressed w/Teodora's and Nadia's English--their accents are so slight now. Always loved Nelli Kim's personality. I do feel for Olga...it has to be hard to lose all the attention to a younger gymnast when you're only 21! (I remember thinking that 21 was so ancient back then...but hey, I was 7 years old!)
Olga korbut was never given credit for her ability, I think that Nadia is the Henry Aaron of the sport, but without babe Ruth, no Henry Aaron. Olga korbut was and is the babe Ruth of this sport
As far as perfect scores where concerned, the Soviet Union would have never let korbut on the top step because they disposed her honestly and her individual alty. Also remember korbut was sent on many world tours that she was have home for more than a week.im not saying Nadia didn't deserve her scores, I'm saying that she would have gotten them in a Montreal fourom that would have only been half filled if it wasn't for Olga korbut making her sport world popular. So every gymnast from every country should all all kiss Olga korbut s ass.
Nadia and Simone are 2 diametrically opposed styles, Simone is pure power, speed, perfection but no emotion nor any feminism at all while on the other hand Nadia is pure grace, artistry and poetry in motion!.Simone's pose, walk and running form is very masculine like and VERY mechanical while Nadia's walk is feminine, sensual and delicate like a rose!.I might not know much about gymnastics but I know artistry and grace when I see it, that's what I see when I watch Nadia perform!!!!.When I watch Simone I am amazed by her dominion and control of the athletic part of gymnastics but sadly there's not much artistry left to be touched and uplifted by it😢😢😢
Talento indiscutibile ma quella giuria del 1976 dava il 10 con molta generosità. In altre competizioni con atlete altrettanto talentuose e con esercizi molto difficoltosi non accadde così
