In the 70s and 80s there were way less distractions, no cellphones, no internet, tv broadcasts went of the air at 12pm so music was what we did for fun and you spent enough time to perfect your craft. Black and white people were more talented back then because that's all you did, all day every day. There are very few today who will take the time to become true masters of anything because there is just so many other things to eat into our time.

Actually no one stole anything. Both Johnny and SRV play in the same league (Texas Blues) but different styles and influences. While Stevie was heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix and Albert King and a lil T-Bone Walker. Johnny was way more puristic when it comes to blues and more traditional. He used finger pickin. His influence was the old Delta Blues like Robert Johnson and Son House but also Chicago Blues like Muddy Waters and Texas Blues like Lightnin Hopkins and of course Chuck Berry's Rock 'n' Roll. Both are great guitarists anywayz 😊

You grew up with racism babe . There are and always have been people of Europeans descent immersed in the Blues .If you go back into the sixties you will find that the Great Bluesmen were playing shitty little bars - I was a teenage girl sneaking in and got to see many . The white musicians honored them and brought them back to the stages they deserved . Isn’t time to acknowledge there are stiffs in every culture. Great Musicianship transcends Melatonin .My mom born 1915 introduced me to Louis Armstrong,Ray Charles , Ella Fitzgerald all the jazz greats to many to say . We were dirt broke but we had the music, that my darling is living the Blues ❤️

On the BB King comment, to be honest, I don't think BB King ever played at more than a fraction of Johnny Winter's level. He wrote some good songs and was a decent singer, but I personally always thought he was always overrated as a guitar player, but just my personal opinion from having seen him play on TV. Even I could play a lot of his lead solo's, which is a bad sign, because I'm a fourth-rate player! But you're right, I'm sure both of these guys listened to and were heavily influenced by a whole range of black artists - blues players like Howlin wolf, and Led Belly, as well as black R&B and jazz players. To my ears, it's always been the black jazz players who were super, super talented as musicians, more than the blues players. The guitar blues players had soul and expression especially as singers, but were not usually all that proficient as players IMO, people like Johnny Winter took a lot of their riffs, modified and super-charged them and played them much faster and better. But the black jazz players?, holy smokes, serious, serious talent and skill there. Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Bird, Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock and so many others - amazing. I think Edgar listened to those cats, and the skating he does in this song is more jazz than blues I think. The natural talent with the Winter brothers is impressive though, especially with Edgar, to be able to be a knock-em-dead virtuoso keyboard player, AND a virtuoso sax player, and an amazing singer too?? And in your mid-20's? As you said, come on now!

Music is an example of how we cross bridges. No cultural appropriation. Just something that makes everyone feel good. We figured that out in the 60’s. But feel good doesn’t sell like feel bad does, so we get pounded with feel bad. For a short time we were all going in the right direction, but something changed. That’s too bad….

Unfortunately, Johnny passed away, but Edgar is still out there - he plays with Ringo Starr (who is also still out there). You might want to ask what happened to the generation that came after them. Also, Stevie Ray was a few years younger than the Winter brothers, so I'd say he definitely copied them. Johnny passed away in 2014. Edgar is still performing and touring in 2024. In 2023 he was was also a member of Ringo Starr's All Star Band on tour. Neither of these incredibly talented brothers have ever been nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which in my humble opinion, is why I don't give the R&R Hall of fame any credibility whatsoever. What happened to music, and white performers in particular? The era of new musicians that grew up listening to John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf and Albert King and B B. King and Freddie King ("The Three Kings") and Albert Collins and Pinetop Perkins and so very many other true greats came to an end. Literally all the true greats started out as blues bands. For example, before going by the name Black Sabbath and creating heavy metal Black Sabbath was a blues band. Led Zeppelin, major blues fans. The 60s and 70s was filled with artists who's main influences were the greatest of the great blues artists. Blues pianist Charlie Segar first recorded Key to the Highway in 1940. Jazz Gillum and Big Bill Broonzy followed with recordings in 1940 and 1941. Ten Years After lead guitarist and vocalist, Alvin Lee was heavily influenced by Big Bill Broonzy, and a big highlight of his life when young was getting to meet him. Eric Clapton was the best man at muddy Waters wedding. After Muddy's wife died he moved from Chicago to Westmont, Illinois ... two towns west of where I used to live. A friend was a neighbor of Muddy's. We didn't harass him doing the fan thing and would just wave and say hi, but it was not uncommon to see Eric Clapton or Johnny Winter or others at Muddy's house. Remove the blues, remove the influence of the spectacular black artists that preceded newer artists and you end up with a bunch of sterile soulless noise makers pretending to be rockers and who turned an art form into an 'industry of cool.' It became image over substance. The Golden Age Of Rock was roughly from the mid-1970s to 1980. Much after 1980 that was still really good was made by those from the 60s and 70s that were still together or had solo careers and played for as long as they could draw crowds and or physically perform. And when you want depth and soul from U.S. born white musicians of that era, those with the most were ones that like the Winter brothers were born in the south, born in Beaumont, Texas ... and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dallas, Texas ... and there were others. The Allman brothers, Greg and Duane, Nashville, Tennessee .. majorly influenced by the great blues artists. Writing and or performing music/songs is like cooking. You have a good recipe and if follow it what you get will be good. Remove a key ingredient or substitute it with something else, and it won't be as good. -- You were not lied to about the Winter brothers being albinos. Johnny Winter was born in Beaumont, Texas, on February 23, 1944. He and his younger brother Edgar Winter (born 1946) were nurtured at an early age by their parents in musical pursuits. Both were born with albinism. It was common knowledge among my generation.

'Soul ' is colour blind, your skin colour doesn't matter!, you either know or you don't ! It obviously goes all the way back through the Blues, way back to African roots! There are others out there, but this is the cream-of-the-crop performance. (Side note: Edgar put together the first version of the song when he was in Johnny's band; even played it at the same venue as the Tobacco Road set you just watched.) The album version went to #1, but Edgar always said Frankenstein is a visual song, so the live version is a must. And by the way, that bass player on Tobacco Road went on to play in Double Trouble with Stevie Ray.

Edgar and Johnny are both albino. Ironically, the bass player is Tommy Shannon, better known as Stevie Ray's bassist. The old-timers knew that all rock music came from the Blues. The old rock bands played blues. Led Zeppelin and the rest. It isn't just white guys, nobody knows how to play instruments as a band. Same with the 70s black groups. You don't see choreographed dancing on stage these days. The machine doesn't want them anyway.

Stevie Ray Vaughan didn't "copy" anyone. Let's just get that straight Johnny & Edgar's bass player here is Tommy Shannon, who was also Stevie Ray's bass player. That's the only thing they had in common. I love Johnny and Edgar, but they don't hold a candle to SRV. I say this as an eighth generation Texan, and all three of them were Texas boys. 😘

What happened to music! Where do I begin!!! For starters… A lot of schools stop having music as part of the curriculum… and this trend continues. Back in the day, starting in elementary school, kids were introduced to and had access to instruments. Now they don’t. Most reactor say that today’s music sucks in comparison, for which there are multiple reasons. Some planned!

You asked what happened. This is my generation. Rock-n-roll is based on the blues largely and in part. This generation and those before this generation perfomed with musical talent. Then what happened? Disco. Then dancing and theatrics. Now it has devolved into theatrics and celebrity, often void of musical talent as exemplified by sampling and auto-tune.

You can ask the same question about black music. What happened. I grew up in the 60s and loved the soul music back then. But now listen to black music. They lost the soul too. So the question becomes, what happened to music period. We all lost our souls and traded it in for greed. Money. Whatever sells.

Saw a bunch of great bands back then. So glad I got to see Johnny live in the early 80's at a small club. Wish I had seen Duane Allman but he died when I was young. There's a band Arc Angels that ended up forming with SRV's rhythm section. Not sure if they're still gigging but they have some good feel.

When you walk into my living room from the back door the first thing you see is two portraits 1) Johnny Winter ( a pastel water color portrait.) 2) Duane Allman ( a photo of him with his tobacco burst Les Paul.)

My neighbors in Dallas had not 1 but 3 children born with albinism. The kids could not get out in the sunshine, so they played at night. During the summer they’d be out all night swimming in their pool.

What happened? Neoliberalism. Corporations started telling the artist what to do. It's a little more complicated than that.... Kind of like the way things are going with the ticket sales monopoly happening today. They have control over where the artists is allowed to perform and when and most importantly IF.

Our generation was cast aside when the Disco scene came to town. The sappy crappy stuff took over since then. That's when Hollywood teamed up with the Music Industry. Now we have cover songs and auto tune.

There's plenty of soul in Texas-- talent is passed across cultures-- both ways.
