There seems to be a tendency in today's culture to glorify fame, but for those that have experienced it, it isn’t always as rosy as it seems. For Hiatus Kauyote front woman Naomi “Nai Palm” Saalfield, who just released her solo record Needle Paw, being a public figure of sorts is at times quite challenging. “Even though you’re surrounded by so many people there is something very isolating about how people can idolize you. I’m not Beyoncé as far as fame goes, but i’ve been in situations where certain social norms go out the window, and this is what I struggle te most with because I really love genuine interaction.”

The wisdom she speaks is enough to make her famous.

Of course the fame is still not the point. I'm just saying.

She's totally not kidding. Hiatus played at an Erykah Badu concert I had front row to. I saw her come to the section I was in, just standing off to the side as I sat about 6-8 seats in. No one knew who she was. I raised my glass from afar and told her their music was soul touching, best stuff to come out of this generation, and I just got an uncomfortable face as a response. I felt so awkward. I'm glad I knew enough to know she had a deep sense of self or I'd have thought she was a diva. For a long time I worried what I did or said wrong or came off like the drunk girl. This totally clears it up. Also, I didn't even dare ask for a pic. Just wanted to toast her. I still think she's amazing.

I did the same a few nights ago. I flew to another country to see them and ended up a lil drunk and bumped into her outside and got a pic and had a very brief chat but there was no real engagement there and i put that to me being drunk. I said thank for the evening, take care etc. In the morning I actually messaged her to apoligize in case i was loud etc and said im sure you dont even remember or care but for my own mind sorry if i was loud at all etc etc. She then blocked me from Instagram haha I was absolutely hearbroken. Like i dont put people on pedastals but I always tell bands etc how much they mean to mean if i bump into them and i dont see mesaag8ng them as off limits theyre just people but of alllll the people to get shunned by I would have put Nai last. Surely a nicely written message is a 'genuine interaction' who knows. Upset me though but hey maybe it was my fault. Never meet you heroes they say but 99 percent of my heroes had all been cool..until now😭

@@rrrqqqrrr I know right? I was trying to ask them if theyre getting bored playing the old stuff especially with a new album around the corner (I mean, theyve been playing 2 new songs for about 2 years also)Its a genuine question rather than just ass kissing (and going 'You guys were amazing!' (which on this interiew she says is what she prefers to talk to fans about) but I very might well have said it the wrong way. I hadn't drunk for like 8 months, I don't fully remember I was so happy to finally see them I just drank too much but I do get the feeling it came come across as 'YOU LOOK BORED ONSTAGE' :/ I mean, her manager Scott was still SUPER nice after that and she still got a pic with me which If I had been terribly rude surely they wouldnt have?. It seemed to end all nice. I mean even if they thought I was a bit of a dick. The IG message was simply to explain that and apologise just IN CASE. I did not expect anything back but to actually block me. :( The worse part was HK legit helped me through a pretty bad addiction and to have that same person put you in the trash was some weird Paradox! I read Nai once answering the question 'Whats the best constructive criticism you have had?' to which she answered 'None. If you want to criticize my band start your own' So maybe there is a bit of that in there. Im pretty sure it was my fault on the whole. I had spoke to Perrin for about 20 mins before hand and he was cool as fk. Real nice dude. But just as drunk as me so that helped but I said pretty much the same to him and he was cool with it.

@@UnclePhillyMyAss i think youre taking it too personally. Nai doesnt know you. being genuine sometimes means that youre going to get genuine reaction. the thing about musicians is that most that play as a living, dont play for you. she sounds like she has social anxiety too. i mean does she look like she cares about catering to others? she feels like she doesnt need validation for something that is part of her life. you didnt do anything wrong not but not everyone in the entertainment industry wants to be acknowledged.

@@khaifrench3323 Dont really understand what youre saying there Im afraid. She doesnt owe my anything Im well aware but what does that have to do with catering to others?Shes at one of her own shows! She just always seemed the nicest girl, bit of a hippy and cool as fk. I have met countless bands over the years, done little tours, Become friends with some of my fave bands even, I don't kiss bands asses for the sake of it or pucker up because theyre 'famous' or whatever. Many bands say they get tired of played old stuff and since they hadn't done ANY new stuff for many years now. I thought it was a legit question. A genuine question as she says here rather that 'Oh youre just that greatest' Its not a case of 'catering' or 'validation' was a simple interaction with a fan who was a bit drunk Im sure its happened many times and much worse. To actively block me from a social media page with thousands of peeps (is that not wanted to be acknowledged?) says I probably pissed her off. Id rather she had told me to get lost /called me a dick and not had a photo tbh. I still love the band. I still pre ordered the new album, I signed up for the patreon the week it started and Id still fly to other countries to see them again.Like I said ive been lucky to meet many musicians I admire and have been at he forefront of my life but never this type of experience .Sucks cos I obsess over stuff like this but It happens sometimes I guess. Just came about this interview and comment so shared my experience. Im sure i am one of the few which probably says more about me!

Damn she’s cool. She’d be hard NOT to dote on. Her music has moved me more than anybody I’ve listened to in my 43 years and I’ve dug pretty damned deep.

I totally understand what she’s saying. That’s why no matter how much I love an artist I never would feel the need to try and express that to them, because at that point they’ve already heard it so many times. I’d rather just put my own excitement aside to talk to them as a normal human being because I know their music, but I don’t know if I’ll ever get along with them as a person. They could have totally different beliefs and I’d rather just keep that in mind and not fantasize about how amazing they are. It’s also a level of respect you have to have for others when you don’t know how they view or approach fame. I wouldn’t risk making someone I respect uncomfortable either.
