In this video I demonstrate various applications from Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu Naihanchi Shodan. These applications are an evolving set of techniques and principles obtained through cross training in various arts and combat sports. Cross training informs my Karate, it gives it spice, flavor and sparks understanding. When you spend enough time in an art, you begin to see more similarities in other arts and combat sports than differences. Then, and only then, real conversations and learning can happen. Get out there and cross-train folks!

This is my own personal training routine and may not be suitable for you. It is strongly recommended that you consult with your family doctor before beginning any exercise program. By engaging in this training routine, you agree that you do so at your own risk.

greetings from Venezuela, sensei. I may be a simple blue belt from shito ryu but I think every karate warrior can learn a lot from his brothers and even from others styles, and always trying to be a good person

@KarateUnity we as a Karate community should consider teaching Naihanchi first with this kind of Bunkai instead of the Pinans. The Garcie Combattives version of Karate, so to speak.

@@Tanuki-Ha I would agree with you, however, every group and organization have their own specific objectives. At the end of the day, if you’re happy, the community is happy, and those objectives are being met, it’s a win-win for all.

Thank you for your feedback. And thanks for watching. I believe all kata can work, you simply have to play with it and adapt it.

To understand the concept of Naihanchi being the essence of Karate, you have to understand the historical context in direct reference to the birthplace of Karate, Okinawa. 3 specific regions of Okinawa gave birth to the 3 mother-styles of Karate(Shorin-ryu, Uechi-ryu, & Goju ryu). The 3 regions that originated these styles are the villages of Shuri, Tomari, and Naha(from this comes the terms, Shuri-te, Tomari-te, and Naha-te). Since Shuri & Tomari were neighboring villages, Shuri-te & Tomari-te would inevitably combine to become Shorin-ryu while the Naha village would birth Goju-ryu & Uechi-ryu respectively. Now with that framework laid down, we will get to the reason why Motobu-sama stated that Naihanchi was the essence of Karate: Historically, in Shuri & Tomari among Shorin-Ryu exponents, ...the 1st kata that students learned was Naihanchi, ...not only that, students had to study and become adept at Naihanchi for SEVERAL YEARS before they were even permitted to learn more advanced Kata due to the fact that Naihanchi retained most of the fundamental principles of Karate technique as a whole from hip-rotation to power-generation by way of firmly planting the feet, the snapping gestures and simultaneous techniques of blocking/striking at the same time, etc...its all there. If you are a student of Japanese Karate then I can understand why this concept is foreign to you but it is common knowledge among we who study original Okinawan Karate. Peace.....

One of my favourite kata, shame that many styles including one of the styles I trained with for over 40 years have abandoned it. So-called Progressive karate styles, some of them should be abandoned

Does katas have any set applications of any technique at all or does the applications vary from student to student all of the time?
@KarateUnity
@KarateUnity 8 месяцев назад
Hello Leonardo, thanks for reaching out. Great question. Some teachers teach set applications, but in my opinion, this is very limiting. It depends on the student and the purpose. Katas are biomechanical principles., so from these, you get many applications, depending on purpose. So therefore, you are right, it depends on the student, and the coach has to adapt according to their needs .
@blockmasterscott
@blockmasterscott 2 месяца назад
I teach a set application as a foundation with the understanding that you can branch out from that foundation. I use the analogy of building a house. The set application is the concrete base, and adapting from that foundation of a set application is like building the walls, stairs and so on depending on the climate, like arctic or tropical on top of the concrete.

@@KarateUnity You did good. The closer you apply the techniques to old Chinese Boxing, the better your odds you are on the right track of the original intent. The second half of the 1900s was filled with lots of silly sports Karate and point scoring with Olympic level athletes.

@@bradlong7941 thank you sir, for your kind comment. We will never know what their true intent was. I just use those things as tools for whatever application I can come up with.

@KarateUnity People always seem to say that 'the original intent of Karate kata are uknown' and yet, whenever I've had the opportunity to learn some Chinese 'kung fu', I have found that they seem to have retained a tradition of being able to explain the moves within the forms/kata - including applications. Perhaps we karate people need to learn some White Crane kung fu in order to reconnect with the original intent of karate kata? I think that the apparent 'simplicity' of Naihanchi is also applicable to modern self-defense methods and 'combatives' - and you seem to demonstrate that really well. Thanks for sharing your videos; and keep up the good work!
