Following someone's posting on HaD (hackaday.com/2013/11/26/laser-...) I had to try this. It turns out that nail clippers make excellent wire strippers and cutters, especially for smaller diameters where you need more "feel" to strip the wire successfully.

If you get a wall nail that has the same thickness as the core of the wire you want to strip and then pinch the wall nail with the nail clippers you will make a hole that will not cut the core of the wire. You can also do this with those sharp nail pliers.

They do look like they work nicely. One quick and easy addition would be to drill and tap (fine pitch) a hole in the body (bottom side) to add a setscrew/grubscrew or thumbscrew to limit how far it closes. Nothing like accidentally clipping off the last wire by accident on a ribbon cable and leaving one shorter than the rest.

I did actually try that, but the entire clippers are hardened/tempered so it's impossible to drill it!

***** I wondered about that as soon as I posted the comment. I suppose it would be hard to anneal a single spot too. That being the case, a small sliding wedge might work instead.

On second thought, I remember another technique using a blunt end of an old drill bit or piece of HSS spun in a single spot for annealing that would be worth trying.

Adding a loop of string or cable tie through the hole at the back to put a finger through might help decouple the pull from the squeeze avoiding accidental cutting.
