As a chronic nail biter myself, this is 100% correct! I currently have my nails done for this very reason. The last time I got them done, they were even shorter than this. But my nail tech didn't say a word, she just did them as normal and they're fantastic! 💖
I use to be a nail biter since a young age, then around the age 12 I realized when I painted or removed my nail polish, I wouldn’t bite my nails because of the acetone (nail polish remover) taste.
If you don’t mind me asking, what made/makes you bites your nails? I hope you don’t mind answering my question. Thank you ❤️ Edit #1 YOU ALL ARE SO AMAZING THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR RESPONDING I DIDNT THINK ANYONE WOULD!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING!❤️
@@HaterzGoneHate it's a compulsive habit, and it's very common for people with anxiety, also people who are stressed. There's also dermatophagia, which is a mental disorder that causes body focused repetitive behavior that causes skin picking, cuticle biting, any kind of skin related self mutilation with the teeth.
as a cosmetology student i actually 100% understand why former nail techs turned her down. it is against policy and sometimes it is even a law where we cannot preform service on anyone with cuts or abrasions on the skin on or around the area we will be doing the service:)
@@allieg6401 Great question! This actually has to do with the product causing more issues to the client! There should be no possibility of contamination because every single tool used in any service must be cleaned with soap and water and also disinfected with a disinfectant that is usually always barbicide (which u actually need to have a license to even be able to use or purchase). If the tools are a one use item (ex. nail file, cotton ball, wooden cuticle pusher, ect.) they can simply be thrown away in a closed trash bin therefore causing no contamination to any other customers! i hope this helps! :)
I have been a nail biter for 25 years and I can 100% say this is the correct way to quit and the only thing that worked for me. In addition, the compassion and understanding this nail tech shows the customer is amazing. I am blown away by the level of service! 12/10 this is how you treat people 👏
@@cricketstarr1489 that is a stupid assumption. You've obviously never had a bad habit or addiction. Try having some compassion, you may become a nicer person.
I used to bite my nails when I was younger, my mom started bringing me in just to have my nails painted and it made such a HUGE difference. Now as an adult, I don’t have the habit anymore
my mums solution to it when i was little was to dip my nails in that like anti biting bitter stuff that you used to get haha manicures are definitely the right route !
Very true, I bit my nails for YEARS maybe 10? And getting acrylic nails helped me because I could not chew them anymore plus they made me feel pretty :)
The pretty boost is real. Everytime i put nail polish on i always avoided putting my hands through manual labour 😂 i hold things differently, lift things differently and overall felt like a pampered princess the whole time because it just makes me feel nice.
It's true!! I had a terrible nail biting habit until I got my nails done and covered the nails with acrylics. I barely bit at all for years after the nails recovered. I've recently relapsed into biting again so I need to cover them up again 😅
im so glad you brought some attention to this because i rarely see anyone mention anything about chronic nail biting. my fingers look pretty similar to your client's before she got her nails done, and i always get judgemental comments about my fingers that just strengthens my insecurities about them. its really great that you understood your client and didnt reject her like the other nail salons did. i havent tried getting acrylic nails yet, but after seeing the comments ill probably try it out sometime. this yt short really made my day, thank you
I was a chronic nail biter from childhood to mid twenties. Tried everything but it was a subconscious habit I wasn’t aware I was doing it. The only thing that helped was getting artificial nails - I wore them for 8 years ( only stopped because I had a child and just didn’t find the time) When I stopped wearing them I was no longer a nail biter!!
My habit was bad. Acrylic nails for years is the only thing that helped me stop. Now I can wear gel polish occasionally so long as they don't rip or tear. It'll make you feel so much better, promise. I even do mine myself now.
I feel touched by what you did for Anna. I know it's a business liability to work on fingers with broken skin, but you took your chances. You're not only giving her a greater chance of healing physically, but also emotionally and mentally, because nail-biting is a chronic symptom of anxiety. For that, you're an angel!
@OrangesXx that never worked for me. Or gum or anything else. Nails fixed the issue tho, so long as I keep them smooth and painted. Even years later once I unconsciously start I can't stop again.
i’m always picking at the skin on my thumbs but not the cuticle, that’s too sensitive (even though it’s so calloused that when i clip it with a nail clipper it sounds like a nail if not louder 💀) my thumbs are so calloused that they’re tougher than my fingers for playing guitar lol
My biting and picking is OCD based and if there is rough skin or hang nails, I CANNOT leave it alone. Wonderful that you understand and took care of your client ❤️
very very true. i pick at my skin often but i forced myself to paint and grow my nails out and now my brains like “aw i don’t want to mess up my fingers, they’re too pretty” so i’ve pretty much stopped destroying my hands ever since.
That is so kind of you and Lovely work!! Good luck, Ana. When I was young, I bit my nails too and my mom (who was a nail artist lol) gave me this “horse hoof” cuticle cream. Tasted downright awful and kept my cuticles and nails moisturized. It definitely helped me so much. Now, I absolutely always keep a cuticle trimmer and argan oil in a roller ball with me at all times or I will rip my hangnail/cuticle skin until it bleeds.
Agreed!!! When my nails aren’t done I absolutely pick and bite at them. When they’re done, I ignore them and it’s like I’ve never had the habit in the first place 😂
I had a habit of biting my nails for over a year, then I used a nail polish that would last one week. I completely stopped and now I almost don't have problems with this anymore.
That actually is the best thing to do. Two years ago my Hands looked exactly like this and then I started putting some nail polish on. Now I love how they look like 💅
Well that’s good that salons that didn’t feel prepared to handle her bad habit rejected her and not lied and pretend to have the expertise. The good thing is she found you 😍
That’s so true. If I were her I’d be absolutely pissed if I went in and payed $30-$60 for them to completely botch my nails. it’s actually a really good thing that those people were honest. If you don’t do that stuff right some of it can actually really hurt and even be dangerous
I think they turned her away more so for hygienic reasons not because they didn't have expertise. It's not wise to do nails with open wounds as she can possibly get an infection. Not to mention it burns like hell with the acetone and acrylic. I haven't bit my nails since I was 13 but I am a chronic skin picker/biter. This last time before doing my nails I had to wait for my finger to heal because that pain is not fun
@HELLUR yes but they should learn how to handle nail bitters before attempting to work on one. I completely agree with you though. They’ll never get better at their job if they decide to remain ignorant to certain techniques!
I was a lifelong biter, I stopped biting last year aged 53. I went for a guided meditation session and I really really wanted to stop because I work in a school and my hands were on show to the kids. It's so difficult to stop, I'd grown them previously but always started biting within 6 months or a year. This time (touches wood) I think the urge has gone.
some people paint their nails just to not put a top coat on so they can pick at the polish instead of the nail and cuticle. not everything works for everyone tho but i hope you get to see what it’s like to have a manicure :3
i used to bite my nails all the time and the one thing that helped me was simply painting them just a plain black, i don’t even paint them anymore and i still don’t have the urge to bite them
Being recommended to Drewi1 on RU-vid was a blessing after years of suffering I am finally cured from HSV 1&2 thank doc you are indeed a blessing to this generation 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Nail polish is so troublesome when doing it yourself (if you are me) and even when it is done professionally I still chew. Only acrylics seem to work..... but they are so expensive.
@@jillwisland680 applying press-on nails with super glue/nail glue can also sub for acrylics. My mom would buy them for me when I was younger so I would stop biting my nails and it worked pretty well. Hope this helps :)
@@naibi1921 I do, but recently they don't seem to be reliably sticking for more than a few days..... or I just have a really bad concept of time. And I can only use them once maybe twice so that gets expensive.
@@jillwisland680 im a nail biter too & im the same exact way so i went on amazon & ordered the beetles nail kit. its a gel extension kit for about $20. every time i do my nails they last about 3 weeks and i am absolutely NO nail professional whatsoever. after watching a few youtube videos its just so easy & the $20 for about 15-20 sets is a lot more affordable than the $70 per set at the salon. + you can design your nails however you want.
Thank you for taking care of her. It must have been frustrating for her to get rejected so many times. Please keep us updated on this clients progress❤
Having my nails painted as often as possible was the only thing that helped me stop biting them! I still have trouble with picking at my cuticles but keeping them trimmed and taken care of is helping!
It’s embarrassing enough when you bite your nails. Getting a manicure takes courage because you’re likely the only customer in the salon with short, bitten nails. Manicurists who can compassionately work and treat these types of nails are a godsend. I think there’s a real business need out there for manicurists who specialize in nail/cuticle biters.
Unfortunately in some states we're specifically taught not to work on clients with open wounds around their nails or on their feet. It is a liability if their wound worsens after they leave your salon. 😥 If it were someone close to me, I would do it at home for them for no pay. But I can't go breaking state board rules either.
Habits aren’t easy to kick, obviously, but that should be the priority. Work on not biting those nails. My nails have never looked anything like this. It’s disturbing almost 🙄
@@bendover9021not everyone lightly chews on the top if there nails, basically trimming there nails. Some people( like one of my close friends) has chewed on the skin so much it doesn’t hurt, so yeah, his skin does look like this. EVERYONE is different! You must keep that in mind!
Exactly! My aunt did gel nails and I’m not biting them because I can’t see them or pick at them. If I can see them I’m going to see how uneven one side is and try to “fix it” by biting it off but then eventually the whole nail is short and bleeding. If I can’t see it, I won’t pick at it.
MAKE SURE YALL NAIL TECHS ARE SANITIZING EVERYTHING, or getting new tools after EACH person. The drills, tools, files, etc. I went to Cosmetology school, had a course on facials / skin , and then another full course on just manis/ pedis/nails/ acrylics and such…Nail techs are supposed to use new tools or properly soaked/ sanitized nail tools with every single person- and that also includes acrylic brushes, nail buffers, and especially files since they are going to directly penetrate your nail bed / your skin (by making microscopic cuts) & fun fact: it’s illegal to use the nail drill on your natural nail. It can be used for acrylic but that’s a personal choice. One other tip: they are also supposed get a NEW POPSICLE STICK- every SINGLE TIME they dip to add / get more wax (we used to break pop-sticks into 3 or 4 smaller pieces, and learned to get enough and how to control what we had on the stick all at the same time)… think about it- the wax doesn’t get hot enough to kill germs 🤷🏽♀️ sorry people; so double dipping can and will eventually also cause infection on sensitive skinned ppl like myself (like a bacterial skin infection or folliculitis). Okay rant over 😂
This is so true. I have this habit, and I got a cheap set of glue on nails because I hated how my fingers looked and I wanted to see if it would motivate me to take more care of them. It worked like a charm. Within a couple of days they looked amazing. Even after I took the nails off, the habit wasn't anywhere near as bad because it gave a chance for them to heal.
i have an anxiety disorder, which makes me bite my nails a lot, along with issues with SH and skin picking. i always felt so judged whenever i try to get a manicure, so i just stopped going to nail salons out of embarrassment. my nails are actually similar to the person in this video, and seeing a nail artist who doesn’t judge and is willing to help make nails like mine healthier is very happy to see :’)
I feel you. I have anxiety as well and I tormented my fingers so badly that their shape will always remain altered. I set the goal not to bite them for an entire month, and if I made it I'd start getting my nails done professionally, as a reward. I made it! I still struggle with anxiety but I feel motivated not to bite my fingers anymore. Keep going! 💪🏻
I have several medical issues. I no longer can grow nails. They only grow a quarter way up my nail bed. They stop connecting to the sides of my nail after that, so they just lift and rip off. I’m so embarrassed of my hands. I went to get tips put on to cover up the fact they don’t grow. The woman told me she can’t do them until I let my nails grow longer. I explained that they won’t. She told me everyone’s nails grow, and I just need to stop biting them. I’ve never once bitten a nail in my entire life. She kept calling other workers over to look at my hands and saying they have never seen nails that short, and how much of my nail beds were exposed. They were asking me how I can even bite them that low or if I had an infection that made all my nails fall off. I was honestly holding in my tears. I was so embarrassed that I left and have never felt comfortable trying anywhere else again.
Amazing and agreed! They are so used to doing quick extensions and designs not worried about helping people grow their nails properly. Great job, looks amazing!
I was a chronic nail biter basically my whole life, I'm 27. A little over a year ago I started using extensions to keep myself from picking or biting. After a lot of patience and some great products, I have strong healthy nails that I am so proud of.
Your videos helped me learn how to use gel at home. I bought a kit and haven’t bitten my nails in a few weeks now. I change the color more than I probably should, but it’s fun to have new colors!
I think, me included, many people don’t want to destroy the beautiful nails either which is why they try not to bite them as often, but when they do bite it’s fake nails so nothing real is damaged and it works, I’ve been able to grow my nails longer now which makes me v happy
I could never relate to the nail biting thing, personally. My nails are like horns. But what a stellar manicurist you are to take the approach that you have taken to helping your customer! She will have a chance to break the habit and have pretty nails. 💅
Same, I tried biting them once and it hurt my teeth 😂 I’ve always struggled to cut them too because of that, so I just let them be long, even after becoming a nail tech I can’t really do anything about the length without a struggle 😂
Thank you for your kindness. As someone who lost my entire thumbnail about five years ago to an infection in my hand and arm it is wonderful to see you treat clients with compassion and kindness. The folks who do my nails are wonderful people and have gone above and beyond to make sure I have beautiful nails. I don't know how they did it initially, but they were able to build my thumbnail with absolutely no natural nail when I had initially lost it.
Same here. Ever since I started gel nails at home and always keep my cuticles moist (so there are no little skin pieces that could seduce me to bite again) my nails have improved a ton and now they‘re a centimeter long. 💅🏼✨
Great job! I would love to do that, and I think it would help end my habit once and for all, but I don’t know anything about nails. Are gel nails the glue-on ones you can buy at the 2 dollar shop?
@@borb9516 Hi Borb, do you mean those nail extensions you just glue on with superglue? If yes, then no - gel is not that. Gel needs to be cured with UV light and you either put it on your natural nail as an overlay, or on top of something else, like in my case on my dipping powder layer. Or you could use it as glue and put it beneath a plastic nail extension. Or you could use “builder gel” (which is just basically the same, just with a thicker consistency) to build your nail extension. Let me explain it this way. The are many different, popular systems for nails. Examples: Acryllic. Polygel. Dip Powder. Gel. normal nail polish, etc. I personally combine 2 of favorite systems: I do a thin coat of clear dipping powder to give my nails that badass strength, this allows them to grow so long (I use the dipping powder “ORLY Nail Rescue Kit”).And then a thin coat of base gel and top gel to give them that sexy, glassy look. My base gel is just one from Amazon, and my top gel is the “extreme shine top coat” from the brand “thegelbottle”. It’s more expensive, but it hardens super fast, doesn’t leave a sticky residue behind and shines like crazy - I’m just obsessed. But for complete beginners a beginner gel set from amazon should do. From all the videos I‘ve watched my absolute favourite one that explains EVERYTHING you need to know is: “HOW I GROW LONG NATURAL NAILS” by the RU-vid channel “The Beauty Vault”. Doing your nails with gel at home is so rewarding and fun. It doesn’t have to be pricey either, for example you could start with a standard hand filing set rather than an e-file. Or instead using removing foil like her you could just cut aluminium foil and cotton pads yourself. :)
Her nails turned out adorable! I've also had the habit since i was a child. I'm not sure who will see this, but what helped me was a product called "bye-bye-bite". I've been using it for two years now and it's helped me tremendously!
This is super correct. I bit my bails regularly down to where I never even knew what my nails looked like with a free edge, from about age 3 to age 17. I got my nails done (acrylics) for prom, and that started a change in my relationship with my finger biting habit. I worked _really_ hard to suppress the anxiety-fueled urge to bite my nails, and was able to stop biting long enough for the cuts around my nails to heal before I’d go to the salon (it was especially hard back when I would bite subconsciously). After I got acrylics, I realized that biting my nails didn’t give the same “satisfaction,” plus the acrylics didn’t break (thank God). Eventually, I found healthy ways to cope with anxiety and left my nail biting habits behind. Instead of biting, I’ll whip out a nail file and an angle nail clipper and clean up my nail area. Now, I have healthy looking nails and always have a free edge, but they break when they’re half a cm long. I’m about to get into gel nails once I can afford the beginner kit.😊
I'm an adult now and I only managed to stop biting my nails last year EXACTLY BECAUSE OF THIS, I've been a nail biter since childhood but getting a manicure or even painting your nails I found can really help break the habit. after 6 months of painting my nails every few days I have long nails for the first time in my whole life :)
That's how I broke that habit as well. Even a little chipped, I went and redid my nails. Never left them without varnish.(used very nude colours at first) I haven't bitten my nails for over ten years after that.
Being recommended to Drewi1 on RU-vid was a blessing after years of suffering I am finally cured from HSV 1&2 thank doc you are indeed a blessing to this generation 🙏🏻🙏🏻
The salon is being protective from lawsuits. And I do agree in this instance given the raw condition of the person’s fingers. If the customer gets some sort of reaction, the salon can be liable. I wouldn’t risk it either!
maybe instead of turning them away make them sign an agreement before starting treatment to take away the potential risk n liability for nail techs , that way everyone can be happy? 🤔
I agree I was a bad nail biter until recently, I’d like to say Covid helped but I’ve worked in kitchens and that didn’t stop me. I HAVE to do my nails especially if something stressful is upcoming like a test because I KNOW my fingers go in my mouth when I’m nervous.
Yes, but you have to consider there are things nail techs can and cannot work with. Some things can be out of their scope of practice. And if she got rejected it’s because they didn’t want to risk their salons not just simply because they didn’t want to do it.
Yup, I agree. I was able to break the habit of biting my nails after buying a nail polish that tasted disgusting but after I stopped wearing it, my habit came back. It really helps me when I get nails because it helps me not pick at my fingers and peal my skin 😬😬
Thank you so much for this tip I have that habit of biting my nails and I have done it for a long time I’m still young so there is time to improve on this habit so hopefully I can change it soon.
Yes!! I agree with you! I have anxiety and I can’t not bite my nails, it sucks because I want pretty nails and skin so doing this would be a big help ❤

Omg you might just save me, I’ve bitten my nails and I hate them. I wish I had beautiful ones and slowly I’ve tried to control myself. My nails got so bad that when people have to put bands on your hand I was too embarrassed. Every second I thought of the disgusted look of a nail tech when they saw my hands. You’ve inspired me and I might just get them.
2 things here: 1: I love how these nails turned out!! 2: I absolutely love how you did the short nails here instead of long nails! People who have natural nails this short, or aren't used to long nails REALLY need to start short and GRADUALLY go longer! You did an amazing job!!
This is so important. For me, it was my preschool principal who helped me stop biting my nails. It was hard, but clear nail polish helped so much! Now my nails grow fast and beautifully. I'm currently on a journey to take better care of them.
Facts! I am a big cuticle picker on my right fingers because of anxiety and stress, and the ONLY time I don't pick at my fingers is when i have a manicure
I got into doing extension nails on myself to stop my biting habit! I can tell it's slowly working. I'm glad you were understanding about your client and did them for her!
Thank goodness someone said it! I have a nervous habit of picking my hangnails and getting my nails done is literally one of the only things that helps!
I wouldn’t work on her either . That’s just me …. and we are not to work on broken open skin sores . There’s a infection risk . Great job on the nails though !
It’s easy for people to say that the nail techs that rejected her “didn’t know how to do it”. But that’s not true. People don’t know that nail techs have to work within their scope of practice and there are risks that they can’t deal with. Infections and diseases are things that can risk everything.
That is soooo true!! I had a habit of biting my nails my whole childhood and teenage years. Once I graduated HS and started making money I would get my nails done religiously every two weeks for about 10 years straight. I stopped at about 28 years old. After that I started giving my self manicures on my natural nails and have been for about 10 years. I no longer bite my nails. Getting acrylics for that long cut my nail biting habit.
I agree. I had a bad habit of thimb sucking as a kid. And when I stopped, I went to finger bitting. I bit my knuckles, too, and had thick scarring on several fingers. Until I got my first acrylic set, which lasted a full month. It takes 27 days to build a new habit. I stopped chewing my fingers and sucking my thumb as well. I was very young when I got them, but it definitely helped! My mother was desperate to get me to leave my hands alone. My scarring went away in less than a year. I did, however, replace a compulsive habit with another habit. Which is where people really find freedom from compulsive or obsessive acts.
As someone who's been bitting her nails since early childhood, thank you, it's impossible trying to take care of your nails sometimes. You get judged because you bite them and when you look for solutions such as acrylics everyone rejects you.
I was a chronic nail biter pretty much since I could grow nails. For years I felt discouraged to have my nails done because I was told they were “too short” even for extensions. I finally found the courage to get my nails done at a different salon a few months back and I haven’t bitten my nails since. Having my nails done nicely is literally the only thing that made me stop biting them
Great job!! I used to wear band-aids on my fingers to keep myself from picking at the skin around my nails. When I started doing my own gel nails, I realized it kept me from picking. When I remove a set and don't put on a new one right away, I'll immediately start picking again without realizing it. Oh well, I guess I'll have to keep doing my nails...LOL
I bit my nails as a child. It was only when I started getting my nails done or did them myself I was able to stop biting them for good. Haven't bitten them in many years now. You're thought process is spot on for this issue
Absolutely true. Not being able to bite my nails with fake nails on has helped drastically. I’m at the point where I don’t even have to have fake nails on not to bite them anymore. It successfully broke my habit 😊
I didn't stop biting until I was 17 (I'm 19 now) and what really helped was looking forward to painting my nails and having a larger canvas to work on. I still have yet to get my nails professionally done, but it will defiently be a milestone when I do ^^
I wish I could do this but I bite my literally down to nothing, to the point of bleeding usually. It's completely uncontrollable, unless I am wearing beautiful nails (which usually pop off because there's nothing to hang onto, there almost no nail bed at all). I appreciate you for understanding the struggle and not making her feel less beautiful or worthy of a nice manicure. You understand the difference it can make!!
Bless you. I hope you manage to conquer the habit. I used to bit mine till they were so short. On a couple of occasions I actually chewed off most of the nail bed and even exposed the flesh below. It was so tender and painful. They did heal and grow back. It's a form of self harm. I couldn't remember a time when I didn't but my nails and I only stopped last year aged 53.
As an oldcool nail biter i can say this is true! I had acryl for. 3 years and stopped biting and now my own nails are longer than acryl nails🥰 very strong too. Ten years ago
