His point is that it's just weird that the lower limit of fining someone for being late is ZERO minutes. You may argue that it's still reasonable to expect that everyone would be ready BEFORE the start of the round, so penalizing being late any amount of time shouldn't be considered preposterous. But I get where he's coming from, purely intuitively it feels extreme and absurd to me as well. I find the idea that it should be a norm for there to be SOME safe amount of time more natural.

@@michaelbradley5510Depending on the situation it can be difficult. With all players you mean in open tournaments like 100+ players. And you can be late for many reasons, as in the past. People not feeling well, having to go to the bathroom as a part of it. It's fine to start the clock, but fining them 500$ and starting the clock is like double punishment, for what reason? Also in bigger tournaments procedures like metal detectors and stuff can take time. (Think about the airport and how long the security takes for a few people). There are circumstances where delay happens. And fining someone because he is 2seconds late with 500 bucks? Like really? The point Hikaru is making is not about the fine in general, but the cut off time. They reduced it to 0 Seconds. I can recall so many football games not starting on time, because of delays. Can't remember any occasion there was a fine because of that. Things... happen. No player wants to lose clock time on purpose.

He's speaking on behalf of all of the players and I bet the majority of them agree with him and want the added flexibility. If there are over 100 people playing in the same location for over a week or 2, somebody will be late. Stuff happens. Chess isn't like other sports and everyone knows that. As long as somebody isn't consistently late, the other player will surely be courteous enough to not be insulted. The timer is going down regardless. This is also a sudden rule change. These are chess professionals and adults and I'm sure they are making a good effort to get to the tournament on time. Having a dumb inflexible rule to fine the players and an arbiter who is just going to throw up his hands in the air and say "i don't make the rules so I'm not gonna bother hearing you out, let FIDE deal with it and you can have a headache dealing with them if you want to explain yourself" just seems disrespectful towards the players to some extent

I understand it's stupid but this stuff doesn't happen in maratons right? It's a race, if the players come late it's their problem doesn't truly work. And most importantly if the games are being broadcasted and the best players in the world are missing because they are late it looks really bad for fide.

@@kagegakurenokuni Yeah, sure, but then who's going to watch it? @RadzikFly
@RadzikFly 8 месяцев назад
@kagegakurenokuni you got it completely backwards. People played board games for thousands of years, just like they did with ball games. But what is today chess exists about as long as something we can call football. And it is 19th century. Professional sport in current form exists even shorter. Not saying FIDE is all great and I wouldn't mind if it got an independent competitor. All I'm saying is that efforts to get some discipline in tournaments (and getting there on time is bare minimum) is just a basic thing. 500usd is actually pretty cheap. 5 min late could be just a lost game if you ask me. And FIDE has all rights to impose any rule in its tournaments. If you organise a tournament without FIDE feel free to impose any rule you like...

The rule is quite reasonable to give a fine if the player is late. Hikaru's suggestion is strangely arbitrary, to say that there should be no penalty for being late by "only" five minutes. They rule is obviously there to try to ensure that people are at the board on time, and you are penalised by not being on time. Just get to the board on time.
