The Nihon Aircraft Manufacturing Company YS-11s of Gambia Airways, seen at Southend in 1993-4. Very rarely seen in the UK, these aircraft were visiting for maintenance at BAF engineering. The British Air Ferries fleet of Viscount and Herald aircraft were fitted with Rolls - Royce Dart turboprop engines, and the YS-11 used the final development of these, with 50% more power than those of the Viscount. The YS-11 was designed for the conditions of the Japanese home market, although sales were not strong, and production ended in 1973 after 182 aircraft were completed.
Gambia Airways C5-CGA , c/n 2030, arrived at Southend on 11 June 1993, and was re-registered as C5-GAA. I had a few brief video shots of it taxiing during September 1993, which I used in the title sequence and final scenes of this video, to delight those viewers who enjoy looking for continuity errors! On 9 December 1993 C5-GAA was involved in a serious mid-air collision near Dakar, Senegal, and although the YS-11 landed safely, it never flew again.
C5-GAB c/n 2024 departed for West Africa on the evening of 28 February 1994.

Flew many times on YS-11s in the US Piedmont Airlines route structure in 70s and 80s. Also flew on a JDA YS-11 in Japan from Hachinoe to Toyko-Haneda in April 1970 when I was PCSd from Misawa AB to Clark AB, the Philippines. Loved that aircraft and the RR Darts on anything - Viscounts, FH-227s, F27s, et al.

Wow, so many memories. That sound! The YS-11 didn't have prop reverse, but those 16.5 ft. props in flat pitch were like big barn doors and very effective. Water meth anyone? Thanks for sharing.

Oh I love the sound of a Dart in the morning! I've finally bought a Bandai model kit of the YS-11. I've been after one for years. I am a very happy camper!

Mid Pacific Airlines used to fly about 14 of these YS-11 aircraft from the-200,-300,-400,-500and -600 during 1980-about 1987 in Hawaii

I was a RR Dart licensed engineer in Oz a long time ago, worked on F 27, Viscount, FH227, Argosy before taking on flying. Great engine, powerful, reliable, easy to remove & instal, & streamlined installation. You just had to learn the art of "metering" the HP cock on start up if & when necessary & calculating mintorque figures on the F27.

Remember them well! Piedmont went to the YS-11 after the Martin 4-0-4, following a brief flirtation with Fairchild-Hiller. Solid airplanes.

Solid aircraft extensively used in the US by Piedmont Airlines. The CV 580 was a direct competitor, and I preferred it to the YS-11.

@NeedtoSpeak, while Piedmont made the YS-11 famous in the U.S., it was actually Hawaiian Airlines that was its North American launch customer.

I'm sorry this is not my father flying this. He was the captain involved in the mid air collision with a twin otter over Dakar Senegal. He was so messed up from the accident he had to see a therapist. ATC in Senegal spoke French and dad was not fluent that's what caused it I don't care what anyone says he was not at fault for that. It was an ATC screw up

While living in Brazil I remember there was a YC-11 that was transformed into a pizza restaurant, in the city of Florianopolis. AeroFlop was the name of the restaurant, lol. I'm not sure who operated that plane prior to it's use as restaurant.

Google translation: I think it is a shame to have halted production of this aircraft in Japan because of Nanc financial problems, should Mitsubishi or Kawasaki have continued to develop this aircraft, would it be the continuity of the technology acquired despite the difficulties in the 40- to 70-seater turboprop market where the traditional models are the ATR 42/72 and the Dash.

The Rolls-Royce Dart RDa.10 would also power the Convair 600/640, a conversion of the famous 240/340/440.

You are probably seeing the Convair 640s of TSM. Not surprising, the engines are the same, and sound it....and the YS-11 was often called the 'Japanese Convair'. Both fine aircraft, though more suited for sea level airports than the high altitude airports of central and northern Mexico, :)

The best F-27 video I have found so far on my 30- odd tapes has been N515AW in NEPC colours on some training flights in Decrmber 1994. There might be some more that I will include in a future RU-vid project.
