Riki sensei explained nami-juji-jime (並十字絞 - normal cross-handed strangle), kata-juji-jime (片十字絞 - half cross-handed strangle), and gyaku-juji-jime (逆十字絞 - reverse cross-handed strangle) as well as some escapes during judo class on 5-23-2022. Apologies for the subpar audio, we had to swap in some audio from the overhead GoPro here and there and had some color correction challenges too, but the teaching was excellent!
0:00 Shime-waza means closing, not choking
0:18 Closing the blood flow, not the air flow
0:32 Doesn't matter which hand is on top
0:39 The target
0:44 How to practice
2:02 Keep your elbows bent
2:23 Fast is fine, but accuracy is final
2:38 Quality is free
3:02 Fusegi practice
3:16 First escape
3:49 Second escape
4:03 Third escape
5:24 Fourth escape
5:50 People generally attack with one arm at a time
6:21 Doing kata-juji-jime as fusegi from the bottom
7:05 A solution to stalling
7:34 These are generally done from the bottom
8:01 Roll, roll, roll
8:11 Monk origins
These techniques are known by many names, like lapel chokes, gi chokes, collar chokes, etc. Riki sensei explained that strangulation results in someone choking, which is why he doesn't refer to shime-waza as chokes.

Speaking from considerable experience from both the giving and receiving ends, Judo Shime-waza are devastatingly effective strangles that put your lights out completely. Ironically, when one regains consciousness the feeling---at least for me---has been like waking up from a refreshing nap. The mistake most judoka, including myself, make when executing Shime-waza is trying to muscle them in with brute force. That method never works. As this video amply and clearly demonstrates, precision, accuracy, and finesse are what make Shime-waza work. Thank you for covering in detail the critical elements to remember and practice when using Shime-waza, the methods of escape, and tactics for application in spontaneous situations. I love that facelock maneuver against stalling opponents. If only they allowed it in tournaments nowadays. Another valuable entry in my Judo library of knowledge!🥋🙏

Thank you as always Jun! Riki sensei went on a shime-waza teaching rampage a few weeks back, so we'll have a few more videos coming out soon!

@@RikiDojoUSA I am looking forward to them with bated breath. This needs to be said: One of my many, many frustrations with existing IJF contest rules is that they no longer permit Shime-waza or Kansetsu-waza from the standing position. I caught many a careless opponent with them in my youth.

Video ist semi optimal, da sich der Text über den spannenden Bildbereich legt und man nix sieht!
