Namibia: stuck in the forbidden region

The Forbidden Region, or Sperrgebiet, is one of the most remote areas in the world. We were lucky to get permits for it through one of our contacts.
But we made a mistake. We did not let anyone know where we were going, and by the time we got stuck, it was too late. Towards the end of the day I was even thinking about writing goodbye letters, because the chances of us hiking back safely into civilization were very slim. This is the the story of how we got stranded in the Forbidden Region.

There was only one person driving and he actually happened to live in Namibia and work in difficult terrain. Could we have done things differently? Definitely. But it is what it is.

Seen this time and time again in Nam. The problem isn't that you don't know what you're doing, but rather you don't know that you don't know what you're doing. It's the unknown unknowns that get you. Satelite phone or inReach is your answer if you go again. Glad you're safe.

Did we think about getting a satellite phone? No, we did not. We figured we'd be out of the region in two days max. Lesson learned.

Always travel with at least two, but preferably three vehicles when driving in remote places. Would be easy recovery with 2nd vehicle and tow strap. A simple mechnical failure on car can end catastrophicly if there isnt a 2nd vehecle that can fetch help.

Those tyres are destroyed now. The sidewalls are wrecked and will fail, just a matter of time, and most likely at highway speed.

Take it as a good learning experience. The trick is to practice the scenario again, and also learn the limits and capabilities of your vehicle. 4x4s are not all built the same. A small trick next time is to wet the sand you’re trying to drive out of. Wet sand has significantly more grip than dry and loose sand. And deflate your tyres. Use diff lock or 2L gear in 4x4 mode.

We obviously did wet the sand and deflate the tires... The only thing that worked at the end was a makeshift ramp to get out of there. I don't actually drive and I won't be going to such a remote area ever again without backup or a satellite phone. That's the lesson learned

They did not make a mistake . Next time take a rowing boat to the Antarctic and make a mistake there. You go into the desert on your own with no knowledge , equipment, supplies or experience and you think this is a mistake

That is the reason it is difficult to get permits. You need to be 100% self sufficient and helping your self…. Deflating tires are so e of the basics of driving in sand….

The permits have nothing to do with the terrain. It's simply part of their government restrictions. And yes, deflating the tires is what we did right before we went in... But things didn't go as planned 🤷‍♀️

We had one vehicle for a 10 day roadtrip. Our plan was never to get a second one... but like I said, lesson learned

It’s a Ford, what do expect 😂. Looks like Americans doesn’t know about Air down on your tyres. Is it even in 4x4 mode 🫣. Money can buy you a permit but not common sense.

We did let the air out of our tires/4x4 mode and got stuck anyway. Ps: not Americans - shit happens to people from all around the world

Yup! Reality is totally unforgiving! Your experience is very interesting, but it is spoilt by your "American English" which you seem to speak incredibly rapidly! Calm down, girl! You have to know exactly how to drive in our wonderful country! Maybe next time take a Land Rover Discovery 2.
