NAMM 2024: Modal Carbon8 Sounds Only

Jim Heywood from ‪@EarmonkeyMusic‬ responded to multiple requests via our Instagram comments to take a closer look at the Modal Electronics Carbon8.
It looks like after a period of uncertainty, that Modal will be back, and the Carbon8 will be in production.
Carbon 8 employs over 40 complex waveform algorithms, and is geared towards the more aggressive and modern spectrum of sounds. With two discrete oscillators, the Carbon 8 has a similar form factor to earlier Modal Synths, but has a new mixing stage with independent level controls for each oscillator.

Happy to see that Modal is still around!! Great company and the only synths that address and suppress the dreaded USB ground sizzling noises!!. (Yes, it's possible without the need for expensive DI boxes! (Listen up, Korg, Roland, Yamaha..... )

This seems like a problem that shouldn't exist... do those companies really allow their machines to flail when going straight out over USB? This is the first I've heard about it, but I guess a lot of people just default to Midi or Stereo out and never bother with USB.

@@UberOcelot It's the sad truth. I researched it extensively around two years ago and it was only (!) the friendly people of Modal Electronics at Berlin Superbooth 2022 who could answer all my questions. They told me that the designers of the MIDI standard in the early eighties (!) were aware of the problem of a possible ground loop. If you look up a midi cable wiring diagram you can see a shield/ground wire/connector. Standard USB does not provide this, and I even tried expensive 'USB Silencers' that didnt work. They only reduced certain hum frequencies and changed them. Therefor, most people, like myself, resort to standard midi because of this reason. But my beloved Modal ARGON is absolutely silent - like they promised - , unlike my Yamaha Montage for example, so it is possible! I have to add that, as far as I remember, people using a laptop dont seem to have this problem as often as desktop users.

Usually I don't listen to synth demos all the way through.. but on this one my ears were glued to it.. from the tamber to the FX ..the envelopes super punchy yet not sterile and always just Crystal Clear fidelity

For the hundreds of thousands of us who don’t find computer screens conducive to creativity it’s fantastic to have the power and versatility of what is essentially a hardware-ified software synth at our fingertips...and those presets sound rich and exciting, even a tad filthy. LOVE IT

So cool to see Modal alive. Been hoping this synth would get developed ever since I saw the first preview! Wish more manufacturers included such competent software as the Modal App. (Looking at you Sequential...😂 )

I have the Argon 8 ! No regret! Great quality! Glad that they are overcoming their economic difficulties! A relief! And this new one sounds attractive too! I don't need anymore synths... Mine cover a wide range of types but I will not hide that I still want some of the unexpected " coup de cœur" !

Not sure they have, this synth might be needed to save them financially, the competition is very tough now with the likes of ASM, Behringer and Arturia

I love this. I have a lot of synths including a Cobalt 8x amd I'm eyeing up an Argon 8x at the moment. I'm sure I could get some of the sounds from other machines but I really like the build of Modals, so if they release a Carbon 8x I'll buy one of those too. If nothing else, it'll become a sought-after classic over time, I'm certain of that.

I hear that a bit now. It was going into my Zoom H6, then straight into the iPhone. The H6 was not doing any compression, nor was the FilMic app. I did not hear it while recording so I'm guessing it's a RU-vid thing.

The carbon 8 is not even on their site but there are 00 series synths which I have never heard off, that's weird.

The 00’s were their original releases, and really great sounding. Unfortunately I think they may have just came in a little too early in 2010s synth boom, then the plague messed up their small business model.

was interested as I don’t have much else that makes those sounds outside of DAWs until I saw the recommended retail price of $1099. If it was half that, like Argon and Cobalt, I’d probably buy one.

+1 on this...that thing is superb. I'd actually throw a bit of money at that sort of thing....shame nobody goes the Kickstarter route for updates, you could have a lower cost initial unit then we vote with ourt wallets a few £$ at time for what we get next and the company isn't having to fund it from the initial sale

The synth is really nice but I think it is hard to convince today's market to buy what is essentially a software synth in a hardware shell, unless there is something compelling about the hardware, like the Osmose or Waldorf synths. Or if it has analog filters like the microfreak.

I don't like using VSTs, so that alone is enough for me. I own the Cobalt 5S, would get this too but money is tight.

Some mistakenly conclude this showing indicates a possible return of the company. This ill advised design and initial production run were completed prior to court ordered takeover and "restructure" which consists of lay everyone off and sell all existing stock to pay off at least some of the massive debt. Liquidation is inevitably around the corner. Covid may well have played a role in their demise. IMHO they could have (and should have) introduced a bi-timbral dual engine "Corgon/Argalt" that could play 2 of either or one of each per patch with dedicated outs/layer in the 5 octave package at the end of '21 for around $1100.

You are making assumptions. I have no problem with the assertion that they're in a tough situation and maybe even "buyer beware, support may not be available in the future", but the specifics you are laying out as being "fact" are speculation.

Interesting opinion, but not accurate. The filing was for a British company chapter and falls under that country’s law allowing for a very specific restructuring period and debt sale, not court injunctioned takeover. Staffing will always be the first lifebuoy floated but is usually part of a partnership/buy-in deal. That they’ve weathered that part to the point of floating a viable product, no matter its genesis or incept date, and are tradeshow marketing it for distribution is not something a company prepping for any kind of potential liquidation would do or even be able to attempt. This lot have a lot of passion behind their creations, even if like Moog they were inept at making them commercially viable or sustainable in their previous form. With some of the right minds added to the equation they can be a force to be reckoned with once more. Good luck to them.

@@Farold_Haltermeyer 2M+ pounds of debt and historical (and likely future given the competitive market space) revenues are not a light at the end of the tunnel; that is the headlamp of the imminent head-on collision. Time will tell if they manage a comeback and I am just up in the night. (Would not be the first time...) To me it is just way too deep a hole for a company of that size and market penetration to climb out of.

@@klstay I've seen worse in this industry ;) it's why there are so many VC vultures at NAMM, the market swings anmd roundabouts are measured in 1 year increments unlike most entertainment markets where they'd be applying a 3 to 5 year arc to even beginning the climb out. This could well prove to just be a proof-of-value pre-sell-off next phase but it literally helps no-one to forecast negativity. They're there. They have a great product. And they've clearly got a consumer base who love their product. For those not interested in throwing their hat in the ring there are plenty of alternative horses to hitch your cart to, but shooting this one in the head just because you think it'll stumble over the hill is a tad narcissistic

Realize that these videos are really about walking up to a synth on a busy show floor, hitting record, and flipping through presets. They aren't practiced studio demos. They're mostly there to give a flavor of what things sound like right out of the box. Your point is a fair one, but time is really limited and these are all impromptu, one-shot takes.

Not a synth I would use. More of a pop/bread and butter foundation kind of guy in songs. But that doesn't make it sound bad. My Novation X-Station from 2008 can produce similar sounds though. And that one has a built in full audio interface (phantom power and so on). No wavetables though. Straight VA. But great VA.

IMO it just sounds like a softsynth in a box. I had the Colbat 8 for a week before I returned it. On paper it sounded awesome, in use it sounded kind of bland and I quickly tired of it. I could never get it to sit in the mix. This just sounds like more of the same.
