i'm an adopted kid. "Little Green" was my song. in 1979, when i was 18, i found my biological father. he was a folk singer in his hometown. when i visited him the first time, i went to the coffee house where he was playing. he played a couple songs, and then said, "this song's for my daughter, Lisa." and he played Little Green. it was his song for me too.
at the end of the day we want to matter to our mom and dad... It's a fucking struggle. It brings us amazing artist, and crazy killers. How do we balance this shit?
Felt the same way watching Linda Ronstadt receiving the Kennedy Center Honor in December. Different gifts, but the same drive to move on "to the next thing." My how they used their time well! So grateful to both of them for making the monumental effort to attend these events. The eyes never change...just beautiful.
@@JT-sr2pl It truly was. I was just thinking how she, Ms. Ronstadt, and their contemporaries were so young as the country was convulsing with dissent, shocking brutality, an identity crisis, and expressions of peace and solidarity sometimes marred buy hedonism and senseless violence and destruction. And here they are now in advanced age, witnessing it yet again. How painful that must be for them. I wonder if their music will be revisited by a new generation who will find it to be surprisingly personal and relevant. I know both Ms. Mitchell and Ronstadt are coping with serious health issues. We are as well as a nation; we are gripped by viruses of the body, mind, and the soul. As always, music is such a powerful agent for change and healing, none more so, than that of Ms. Joni Mitchell. Nice of you to comment, Tom.
@@lnl3237 a beautifully written tribute to Joni, our past and present, our national spirit etc. So much awareness, such LOVE. I've been so concerned about J.M. throughout this pandemic especially. She just spoke (on the video - I almost cried for joy). I've been praying for her and that voice!!! God please continue to Bless, Guide and Protect her, you, me, US our World, Universe...Amen
@@petemavus2948 What an uplifting message to greet my day! It became my morning prayer. I doubt Ms. Mitchell and Ms. Ronstadt read RU-vid comments like yours, but I do hope and pray that when they are alone, enjoying moments of contentment and comfort, they allow themselves to experience the deep and abiding affection and gratitude we, the consumers of their art, feel for them. Their music permeated every mood, every emotion, and every phase of our lives. Just listened to Ms. Mitchell's "The Circle Game" the other day and marvelled at the wisdom contained in a song written by someone so young. Her "earthen vessel" may be worn and weary and dangerously fragile; it may soon break beyond repair, but the beauty it contained is with us forever. I pray there are courageous "poets" among us, who like Ms. Mitchell, will help us navigate the roiling rapids within us and around us today. God bless you, too, Pete, and thank you.
I enjoyed Joni at 16, and now at 68. I met my wife when I was 18, and taught her how to play guitar. One of her first songs was Circle Game. I played it for her last night, and she cried. She told me that my guitar playing and singing led to her falling in love with me. We are now married almost 47 years. Thank you Joni, you badass matchmaker.
this was moving ,,i met joni in the early 8o,s ,when i was living in the west indies ,,i couldnt tell her i was a fan ,,she wouldnt have spoken to me then ,magical days ,,,dancing to rod stewart,,in a disco nite ,,,,
@@evanhughes1510 Yeah I thought that too. The smoking also destroyed her previously angelic voice. I mean, with age the voice loses brilliance anyway, but smoking makes it a lot worse
She is a genius. She is an innovator. She is a warrior. Who else can write their own songs/poems, sing them, play them on a guitar she created the genius tunings for, while also being able to paint/sketch professionally? She is the real jazz singer or ascended singer/artist. She is the only one with this infinite amount of talent that has never ceased. She is the only one of these past two centuries that is like this. Cherish her.
OMG! I'm 70 this month and only Joni can still make me cry tears of joy and the equally important tears of sorrow. I am still amazed at her poetry and she is still #1 in my heart. Congratulations!!!🌞
Mr. Herbie Hancock, your description of Joni is amazing, wonderfully spoken and perfectly inclusive of her nature. Thank you for the delivery, and thank you for being there for her...j
Joni still has those sparkling blue eyes that shine right through...I love this lady, she is one of a kind..I love Joni and her music, even now as I grow older with her.
At high school portraits for yearbook in 1974, we were asked what we wanted to say under our photos: my line was "only a dark cocoon before I get my gorgeous wings and fly away"... from "the last time I saw Richard", Blue album, Joni Mitchell. She had that much effect on me at the age of 18. I listen to her songs to this day at age 64. She has been with me through many phases of my life. I can't thank her enough!
Same Proud to be old school. Found out about Joni Mitchell in 1988,my mom found out about her back in the day when she was singing Woodstock and all her first album.
I swear I do too, I've said thee same thing about JFK,RFK & Jimi Hendrix, though I was a kid, when they were here too. Peace and Love Ya Always Joni Mitchell !!
What a treasure this lady is. Hard to watch this without tearing up. There are no words that can truly express her greatness. So wonderful to see how her health has improved so much. We still need her inspiration here with us on this plane.
She's one of a kind. An absolute classic! Canada has produced so many greats: Joni, Leonard Cohen, K.D. Lang, Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young, Anne Murray, Celine, etc., but Mitchell is by far, the most unique of them all.
You might need to expand your listening into some more challenging types of music...Paul Bley, Glenn Gould, Oscar Peterson , Cdn geniuses all, come to mind
Herbie hit the nail on the head describing her journey through the creation of her music. She's an immense talent and moved a generation with her creativity and musical ingenuity. The musical world is a far more inventive place because of her work.
It takes a Musical Genius to fully understand and properly explain another Musical Genius. ... Herbie Hancock was the PERFECT CHOICE for this Tribute. .... I cried when I saw how old Joni has become. .... She'll always be my first mad crush and I'll always be looking for a woman just like Her.
This woman is definitely “bad-ass” and brave. She indeed has changed the paradigm as so eloquently stated. I listen to her and am lifted each time to serene heights where clouds, like waves of cream, gently wash over me. What an inspiration! Thank you for being, Joni. I love you. You’ve walked a path few others have and I among many others am grateful.
Joni is a genius. Her talent spans the artistic spectrum. In 1972 I was a sophomore in college. Joni was playing in DC. I wrote away for tickets (how quaint!) and included a note with my check saying that my friends and I were coming up from central VA, so could we please have good seats. Imagine our surprise and delight when we were ushered to the second row. She was sublime, in a long blue dress with just a guitar and dulcimer and her ethereal voice. And of course her lyrics.
Joni is one of a kind, once in a generation, an artist for the ages. Who better to speak to her genius than another, incredibly articulate genius: Herbie Hancock.
Joni's words, music and painting have been immensely important to me since first hearing her as a teenager. Most important artist of the 20th century, nobody else comes close...
So happy to see and hear this treasure stand and speak! Joni has fearlessly shared her dreams, her loves and losses. Unique, brilliant music and lyrics that lift, edify, educate and offer solace. God bless her!
Mid 70’s, tuning my guitar to open D, playing Joni’s ‘Radio’ and getting lost in her words and music. I am 66 now and Joni’s music is and always will be the most beautiful sound for me. Thank you Joni.
If watching this doesn't bring a tear to your eyes you're not human. What a treasure Miss Joni Mitchell is. The world will not see the likes of her again, and how lucky are we to have her here with us during our time on earth.
"There are artists who come along once in a great while who change the whole paradigm of the medium" - that says it all Mr. Hancock. That says it all. Joni was so far ahead of me that it was years before I got old enough to appreciate - fully appreciate - what she was creating. And the moment my mind "got it" was indelible. And musically life changing.
I was driving across the burning desert When I spotted six jet planes Leaving six white vapor trails across the bleak terrain It was the hexagram of the heavens It was the strings of my guitar Amelia, it was just a false alarm
Both Joni and Laura nyro brought such creativity and honest passions to a world so hungry for these very things...thank u for helping me navigate a visceral world I had no education for & and for being a voice for those of us who often felt mute
Another example of the US honouring their precious artists. So lovely. Always done with such respect and style. Very moving. We cant imagine a world without this powerful woman's unique and universal voice.
Wow, Joni! When a legend in his own right so perceptively describes you in the terms Hancock chose for that speech, you know that the world has properly recognised your immense contribution to writing, art and music. You will always be number 1 in my heart.
Such a beautiful moment, Herbie able to say just the right words, Joni, so fragile yet with so few words, humble and appreciative, tears well up, decades of excellent music, outstanding award!
What a beautiful touching and heartfelt speech from one amazing artist to another. Thank you Herbie Hancock for saying what we all think and know. Joni is so unique, there is no-one else like her in music. A pioneer and groundbreaker in what she has done for all singer-songwriters and an artist in the truest sense of the word.
Would it not be more accurate to say that she blended her poetry and music, both perfect on their own, into something that lifts the soul even beyond both? She is one of the greatest artists of our time.
Very moving to see her recovering and getting out again to be with her friends and compatriots. Wishing her nothing but the best and a continued recovery.
I can so remember being a kid and hearing "Help Me" playing in the mall while shopping with my mother. Joni's unique sound brings back so many childhood memories. Where did the time go??!
That was the record that woke me up to her genius. I worked at a record store, and the day it came out we played it through 3 times in a row. I was hooked forever. I worked backwards through her earlier records, then eagerly awaited every new one after that. She should have gotten Dylan's Nobel Prize -- or at least shared it. He's never been on my wavelength, but I pick up her signal loud and clear.
@@ejb7969 As it flies.. One of me favourite recordings is the Bob n The Band's Basement Tapes.. Just makes me happy go lucky as it meanders along.. As good as n vaunted so much that Blood on the Tracks is.. I'd grab a hold of Hissing from a burning house before it. The running order of the title track n Shades of Scarlet coupling up.. Immense.
She is one special creative artist - painter, poet, yes, a true Renaissance woman, and like me, a person concerned about making art influence world politics. Honor our fragile earth, honor nature, respect our one true home...Don’t t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got till you’ve destroyed it...Honor our earth, our oceans, the air we breathe, all things beautiful and fragile that are upon it...❤️🌹❗️🙏
My go to Joni records as a 16 year in the 80s, were Wild Things Run Fast,Dog Eat Dog, Chalk Mark in a Rainstorm,Hejira,Don Juans Reckless Daughter,Miles of Aisles,Shadows and Light,Blue.....
The last waltz has got to be one of my favorite rock documentary movies of all time.Every musician in that movie was great however four of my favorite singers stand out. Neil young, muddy waters,Bob Dylan....and JONI MITCHELL.
there aren't enough awards on this earth who can testify the importance of this genious . Jony has influenced dozens of millions people of any age,at any latitude of this Planet. If you are a musician, you're bound to love her. If you like poetry, she'll make you mad. If you are a simple human being, she'll soon become you're best friend. If you like a simple acoustic guitar, or an entire orchestra , you'll hear her spirit grab your soul istantly. If you like something more sophisticated than a ballad or a piano-voice solo song, Joni is ahead of you with jazzy arrangements and musicians ( C.Mingus, Pastorious, M.Brecker just to name a few, including his mentor that night Herbie Hangkok). Make sure you don't miss anything created by this Fallen Angel because nothing is to be missed.... I thank God for Joni's company, wisdom and art during my last 50 yrs . Long Live Joni !
No one captures a moment like Joni. And yes, she is a badass! She absolutely blazed trail after trail for women and men to follow in, looking great doing it without makeup artists or stylists. Great job Mr. Hancock!
Her music was a huge part of my childhood. I was obsessed with the movie practical magic as a child, and her song Case of You plays during a scene. I always found myself going back to that song and falling in love with it over and over again. When I got older, I learned to appreciate her more and listened through all of her albums. Now she's one of my favorite singers of all time. I hope she's finding peace and healing and is healthy at this time in the world. I'm so thankful for her and her art. She deserves nothing but peace.
Because she was way ahead of us! We grew and caught up to her! I sometimes appreciate I kind of went away as she changed...because now I have so much of the art I missed to catch up on! It's all very wonderful today! It's like hearing her fresh as we grow older and now understand and appreciate what we might of missed! She is a lifetime blessing to the way we view our souls. What a journey she took this generation on! Her work will take future generations on that journey as well...as they build on it! She braved a path and had enough tenacity to leave behind the goods!
What a great Songwriter & Musician- I met Joni back in the 1960s Yorkville Ave Toronto, at that time I pro a Pro Photographer, sat down and had a conversation with young lady. Congrats Joni well deserved
