That's tears we share. I think it's partly her unbelievable scarred independence and rule-breaking strength you can feel shining through, combined with having experienced the extreme sensibility and never completely graspable complexity of her music that makes her just being recognized for it a moment that pierces through your heart. It makes one elevate simply realizing what rare kind of giant she is.
no one Ive ever heard or read about her focuses on her attractive looks, which is unusual, especially back then. the songs were so great --how can you bring up her looks? .I don't think I would call her music, sexy or overtly sexual, like STONES -- there's no whambamthnkyouman -- unless she decides to include.--but it has sentiment and sensuality -- bet she likes it that way..haha
@@CelineOracle I agree...Judy Garland? One of my all time favs -- but she was a performer and an interpreter-- no one told her to write a hit song. Joni isn't a born showman like Judy -- but she overcame childhood Polio in her arms and relearned how to tune guitar so its suited her best -- mostly just weir open tunings -- and in the process invented a brand new genre or style with those open blues tunings. She gave those old 0pen Chords new life and a female perspective. With Neil Young, he had polio and it weakened his leg arm -- his fret arm, the ones mustangs cling to when riffing. Most musicians learn those standard but tried and true blues licks and go on from there -- -and though he can play most anything he want now as long as he does't stray much unless her chooses to.JMHO. probably of no interest to non musicians. I agree...I've only started to pour over her catalog in the past month and it's just staggering: Blue, Heijira. Mingus, even going into the 80s (honestly, my favorite era), with Chalk Mark in a Rainstorm (with perhaps her most powerful, heart-wrenching lyrics of all time: The Beat of Black Wings). She never lost her sense of discovery of new sounds and textures.

It had already started, so I was alone at the table, and everyone had left the patio and gone in. Then, across the patio came a single woman in a beautiful kimono. All at once I recognized her. It was Joni Mitchell, an artist I idolized beyond measure. I could barely whisper directions to the party. I've seen lots of famous people in my life, but that was the very best. Gosh, she was beautiful.

Hard to believe it took them this long to give a songwriter award to Canadian Joni Mitchell. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young all said she was a genuine genius and probably the best songwriter ever. High praise from some very accomplished songwriters.
The best artist Canada ever produced ! She prompted me to pick up a guitar, a pen and paintbrush too. There has yet to be anyone else with that kind of talent. Congrats - you deserve every bit of it !
When I consciously heard Joni for the first time in the mid-seventies, I was very deeply touched. Sometimes my tears flowed because of the great strength and the living spirit. Best greetings from Germany. Congratulations.
When he says she would have made Charles Mingus proud you can the emotion on her face. Very touching as I remember at the time she took a lot of flack when she made that great timeless album with and for Charlie Mingus. She really is a genius.
noticed that true moment of emotion. she has a deep love for Canada and being honored there is big for her, I've read and heard her say. She also confessed, that though she's humble and eternally grateful - but man, it's a chore to go to one of those every month...she laughed...but then said she didn't want to seem unappreciative -- I saw her earlier this year out and about at some award show, where she was again honored. Her voice his gone and has been, but she stood up and waved and grinned, and mouthed" OMG" -- I could tell it really mattered to her. I think the oder you get, the more someone like that become concerns with their legacy. She's like that. I heard she's doing well -- just can't sing or write.
She has great strength in each side of her brain, I think, based on what she said. Great analytical mind and emotions right on the surface. I think that's what makes her so unique. She doesn't like being put on a pedestal but how can she not be. Creative thinkers in this world are the most needed in this world.
That final speech!!! Lol She is truly one of a kind. I revere her. She has been my guide, my free therapist, my favorite mind for almost 30 years. I don't know what I'd have done without her.
Joni was going to cry because of Charlie Mingus dying during his last recording. Amazing that he chose Joni to work with. She was a radical jazz musician. Joni is by far beyond any musician ever of any gender the very best of the best. Joni at 64. She is an incredible talent a genius.

She’s a woman I deeply admire. Her whole work ethic and body of music is amazing and she’s always kept true to herself. A true visionary. I hope her health improves. She’s been through enough.
Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon have always been my favorite female singers (was born in '56). Got into Pat Metheny and after 10 years ran across Shadows and Light (1980) which also featured Lyle Mays (though he stayed in background), Jaco Pastorius, Don Alias, and Michael Brecker - three of those are gone and (I didn't know til today) we almost lost Joni. Good that the music and videos will last forever.
All true artists have the gift of being able to traverse and connect heaven and earth. She accomplishes this in her art, in speeches, and in simple conversation. She doesn't think or experience in a linear manner but rather holographically. One point lights up the entire three-dimensional holographic sphere with endless connections and possibilities. She can touch the stars and, simultaneously, have her feet planted and rooted deep in the earth. She is artistic, ethirial, and beautiful while, at the same time, realistic about her own life and society - not countenancing any bull shit illusions.
Had she only stopped smoking she may have been better today. So many memories brought on of places in foreign lands hearing Joni's voice. There is no match to her and never will be.
I listened to the live version of the 2007 Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame show on CBC Radio ... it was about 2 hours long. The CBC TV show was parred down to less than 1 hour. There is a lot missing here. But, I wanted to point out something that struck me then and that I am reminded of now. That Joni did not show up for her Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. While, at the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony, she was in tears. Just wanted to point that out. Make of that whatever you wish. I have drawn my own conclusions.
They say you can recognize a pioneer by the number of arrows in the back. She had a brutal start and the trolls are still piling on but it's great to see her getting recognized before she dies. Middle finger to all the trolls. She lives on as a great in history your just miserable greasy spot on the road.
Her hearing Herbie say with such confidence that Mingus would've been proud is the next best thing to getting it first hand. _He knows_ ... the message received went straight to her heart and is all over her face. Very emotional moment for me since I had that album on endless loop, thanks only to a local open-minded jazz station bringing cuts to our attention on the regular. I remember all the side-eye she got from mainstream and jazz folk alike. But Joni never gave any fucks and that's why I love her.
only 60s female musician that I DO not recall 'SEXY' OR 'hot' applied to her music. And she was very attractive, still is. But back them she had to endure a lot of sexism -- but from the industry, not her fans, or the guys I knew who loved her. -- every girl I know loved Joni Mitchell -- and a few of us boy learned about her too.
WTF took them so long?!!! How many 'Canadian Songwriters' are worthy of being in any Hall of Fame? Surely, whoever they are, she is a country mile ahead of them. The only one that I can think comes anywhere close is Gordon Lightfoot.

Wow. Did not know that. Saw a young Herbie Hancock solo piano gig at the Village Vanguard, NY way-y back in the day. On the same bill that night - Mose Allison! Got to chat with them....two of my heroes. Saw Joni at two live shows in Saskatoon, SK, where she grew up as a teenager. My big sis had hung out with her as a young teen in high school. She was in our family house! Decades later, in the nineties, in Saskatoon, she came over to my house, with a mutual friend. They tapped on my window. We had a nice visit then all walked over to a neighborhood pub for a couple of beers! Take it from me, she is, charming, warm, lovely, funny as hell, humble, gracious - an all around amazing, inspired, and awesome human being....and a true musical genius! Well, that's my "brush with greatness". Thanks for listening.

Stop resting on ur laurels joni....you used to write great pop songs. Songs we loved to sing along with in the car . You havent done that in 40 years ,whatz up with that? Yer sum complicated jazz cat? * i want to make it clear , i love blue She never went back to that sound again...and i miss it!
No one can recreate what they did in their prime. She's not resting on her laurels, though. She kept working and creating; artists mature and grow. It's like a ballet dancer who can't always do the same leaps and bounds but they grow in other ways.
