She wrote for others and had to be coaxed into performing. Her music was not easily categorized by the big labels. This hurt her popularity. To her diehard fans, though, she stayed true to her music. True Americana. She's an Angel.
I will go to my deathbed saying: Nanci Griffith was/is one of the most under-rated, yet one of most influential, and uniquely great an artist, in both America and Europe, over the last 4+ decades. 4 decades now since her first LP release. 4+ decades of soothing, moving, angelic Music. Kudos to all of NG's work; over her lifetime, and for making my own life a bit gentler, and kinder ~!~ Proof Angels do exist on Earth, if but for a short while.
Beautiful artist and lady. Rest in peace Nanci. Thank you so much for all you did to make this world a richer more wonderful place through sharing your gorgeous gifts. Heaven has the arrival of a fabulous angel. May you get your just rewards for doing your earthly job using your gifts so humbly and beautifully. A job well done.x🥲💔
Once upon a time this kid watched a girl in a yellow dress on Austin City Limits. She sang to him about a very blue moon and he fell. Hard. I still love you Nanci.
Looking at this video, watching and listening to Nanci, I am more and more convinced that Nanci's beauty, her sweetness and her skill are incomparable.
This was the first song I ever heard of hers. It is still a favorite. I saw her on a wee-hours music show back in the mid-80s while on CQ duty. I fell in love with that pretty thing with that voice and those lyrics. Traveled some miles wearing out the cassette and later CDs. I used to say I would marry anyone who loved Nanci Griffith as much as I did tomorrow and I'd marry Nanci today. LOL. As it turns out I married my HS sweetheart 21 years later instead. But she liked Nanci's music enough. Guess I'll have to take my pickup out on a road trip here in Southwest Texas while playing her music for hours as a tribute. Thanks, Nanci for keeping me company through the miles, the relationships, and during beautiful rainy nights.
This video brings back such fond memories of ACL, I was fortunate to have backstage passes for her show that night. Her music captured the hearts of many that night, She seemed very quiet and shy after the show back stage but I was told that the big chest with Moet champagne was her request. one of those nights that you never forget.
I saw this whole performance on Austin City Limits by accident. Had never heard of her before that. She blew me away! Wonderful, wonderful singer/songwriter. One of a kind. Just great stuff.
Sooo Great!!! That performance was the first time I ever saw/heard Nanci on Austin City Limits......Lyle Lovett backing Her and wearing a Dress she made!!! Will never forget!! RIP Nanci!!
Such incredible voice and charm. I can listen to her all day long . A true artist. Nanci, wherever you are in heaven. You have touched our souls. For that I can only Thankyou.
The first time I saw Nanci was live at the long defunct Midsummer Bluegrass Festival in Grass Valley, California. I think it was around 35 years ago. She was backed up by her bass player and by Nina Gerber on guitar. I once asked Nina about it, and I think she said that was the only time they had played together.
I remember watching this. It feels like such a long time ago, but yet it still touches my heart just as strong as the first time I saw it. I miss her so much!
The voice of an angel. God must have needed her for his choir. Such a talent. Saw her in Austin and got her to sign the cd. It's just a little thing I will always treasure.
i only just discovered this amazing talent. she has such an amazing voice. then i find out she has passed on. so sorry for the loss of this beautiful person. rip
Judging from the videos available from this appearance on ACL, it looks like she was mainly performing off the "Once in Blue Moon" album. This must have been shortly before "Last of the True Believers" came out.
