Converted from the Other Voices | Other Rooms VHS. www.nancigriffith.com www.katewolf.com On this segment, Emmylou Harris, Nina Gerber and Pete Kennedy join Nanci on Kate Wolf's - Across the Great Divide
Nancy had a deep understanding of the music she played, the songs she sung, no matter the writers she always gave them the justice they deserved, I don't think I ever heard her just cruise through a number, rather she always passed its meaning on to us. Such a singular , talented and humble person , gone far too soon, denied the golden years , may she rest gently in peace and love and song with all the other legends.
These ladies are simply hauntingly brilliant. Nanci has lifted this song to immortal levels. Her emotion is brilliant. Emmy’s harmony is stunning. Kate would be immensely proud of this version. This is just mesmerising.
My favorite song sung by this angel. Can't believe she is gone. I hope she knows how much she was loved. Thank you Nanci for leaving us with your beautiful music. Rest in eternal peace.
This song helped me dearly when I went through my "bad years". All the sorrow and the pain was stored inside this song. Comes back everytime I hear it. Reminds me how life can be and that times changes things. But not for all.. Don't forget those who suffer or are in pain. Lets hope the better days comes again.
There simply are no words to describe... I'm certain Nanci and Kate are now doing duets - now they've crossed the Great Divide. We miss you ladies incredibly🥲
I have to listen to these two queens sing together. Never a day goes by when I don’t listen to one of their duets together. Both are such power houses yet can blend so well together that it amazes me. E LH brings such depth to these songs that I am amazed at her range of harmony. NG is out of this world. Together they are incomparable. Thanks NG and ELH for such wonderful music
This was the first song on the CD, am I right? I remember well the week I bought it; it's a very melancholy album, but that's exactly how I felt at the time. One of the most under rated CD's of the '90's.
I compare Kate's voice as the female version of Jim Reeves. It just doesn't get better. I do miss Nancy and keep my fingers crossed that she'll return to the stage sometime.
I use to go see Nanci Griffith at Anderson's Fair in Houston throughout the late 70's and fell in love with her songs and angelic voice still listening to her music
The blessings of knowing these voices this people my heroes! Will be here for women to know in the generations to come. I've been so blessed to have such great representation of my generation!
Absolutely love this song and love her version best of all. Such an incredibly sad song. It reminds me of the people who and life I took for granted so many years ago. Now they are all gone and that life I once knew is all gone too.
Emmy Lou is a master matching the phrasing of the lead singer.. .often without watching them... she closes her eyes and is in the flow... in sync we call that the mojo...
Don't overlook Iris Dement. It's her high harmony that completes the trio and it wouldn't be the same without her contribution. Fantastic! Follow the threads for more from this concert. It is still available on VHS and any studio can transcribe it onto a DVD so as to preserve the tape.
Iris DeMent isn't on this track; the other woman (playing the mandolin) is Lee Satterfield. Iris was on some of the other songs on this show (Speed of the Sound... and Tired of Me Darling for example) and on the album, she was on the cover of Gordon Lightfoot's Ten Degrees and Getting Colder.
This is such a majestic tribute to Kate Wolf. NG rendition of this majestic is phenomenal. The harmony is exquisite, just watch it from 4.15 to the end. ELH brings such a depth of harmony, it is ridiculous. Nina’s guitar work is so beautiful that it’s timeless. The ending is such perfection. A masterpiece and a true tribute to Kate Wolf.
Nanci's first appearance on Austin City Limits hooked me. Many's the night she sang me to sleep. The songs she wrote, the songs of others she gave her touch. What I would have given to spend an evening around a campfire with her and Emmy and a few others
Nanci: You were a bridge across country, folk, pop, rock n' roll ballad. The soft, tender notes and the spontaneous throaty emphasis combined to perfection when singing your own great short stories, or that of others. Thanks for the post, Kenneth. Thanks for what you gave to your audiences, Nanci.
Always loved the way these country singers always play the baby chords whilst the real musicians do all the difficult stuff off camera. a bit of a swizz really.
Does it get any better than Nanci, Emmylou and Nina?....I can't imagine it, except to add Linda Ronstadt and Allison Krauss.. Voices from heaven and one hella good guitar player...Check it out start at 3:44 on Nina lead guitar.. check Nanci's reaction to what she does with that lick!!!! damn.
I wish Ken Burns would've included Nanci Griffith in is doc "Country Music." She was one of the first to sing and promote "Alt-Country." Just the same I absolutely adore Nanci. Saw her twice back in the early nineties.
