These old Hollywood studios had so many great actors and writers under contract, This was most likely churned out for a Saturday matinee audience, yet it's so well done and entertaining.

I've always been intrigued by Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books because they occupy almost the whole upper shelf of the Fiction section 😁 but I didn't have an ample time and now enjoying it 💜

Love these movies. This one makes two. A read all the Hardy Boys books as a kid and then read all my sister's Nancy Drew books. That was something a guy never told his buddies :~)

Bonita Granville (February 2, 1923 - October 11, 1988) was an American film actress and television producer. She died on October 11, 1988 of lung cancer in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 65. She was buried at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.

Oh I love this movie. What a shame journalism has lost it's integrity and independence as the years have progressed. But, ahhhh, never let truth get in the way of a good story, lol.

What a great film and just the right length for something so light. I was enjoying watching how many laws/rules Nancy Drew broke to solve this case.

They are Granville and Thomas and they're a cue couple and she's a good little actress: Children's Hour (These Three), Now, Voyager, Escape.

They're fun films! Although, I always wonder why they wrote Nancy to be so high strung. She's quite the opposite in the books. And the Ted for Ned thing is just silly!

My favorite Nancy Drew movie. Love Bonita Granville; but I don't think that was her singing voice. Mary Lee was fabulous. These movies were "laugh-out-loud" funny.

It all started in 1930 with The Secret of the Old Clock. Harriet Adams, daughter of the legendary and prolific magic-maker Edward Stratemeyer, using the nom de plume of Carolyn Keene, wrote 46 of the Nancy Drew novels as of '78. Stratemeyer was the genius behind the magic mill that was called the Stratemeyer Syndicate, formed in 1927, which published a seemingly endless number of novel series for young people. He used 46 noms de plumes and wrote 250 novels and had a hand in 700 others. He was called 'the father of the 50-centers". In '78 they were at 1.50$, now they are more like 20$. He wrote 3 Nancy Drew novels prior to his decease in 1930, when Mrs. Adams took over. In the '60s she rewrote several of them to modernize them, eliminating, among other things, the old Afro-American dialect. The Dana Girls (34 novels from '34-'79) was meant as a counterpart to the Hardy Boys, but Nancy Drew (101 novels from '30-'91) was more popular. Grosset & Dunlap did most the publishing, and my books from the '60s, in the Hardy Boys, Ken Holt, Rick Brant, etc. series, were more modern verions, so later authors and G & D deserve a lot of the credit for the magic, too. Bonita Granville, nicknamed Bunny, started in films as a teen playing brats, which she liked to do. ''It started my career,'' she told David Zinman, author of the excellent Saturday Afternoon at the Bijou (1978), in a telephone interview. ''And I enjoyed doing roles as heavies. It was always easier for me than just playing myself.'' One would think it would be the inverse! But she soon grew tired of it, and then Warner Brs. and Nancy Drew came along. There were 4 movies, all in '38 and '39: Nancy Drew, Detective; Nancy Drew, Reporter; Nancy Drew, Trouble Shooter; and Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase. She was also a producer for the Lassy TV series and Franky Thomas was also known for Tom Corbett, Space Cadet. Bonita was only 5' 2'' or 5', depending on the source, weighing in at only 105 lbs. Oddly, her female sidekick in the novels was a tomboy, being tall, athletic, and having the name of George. Edit: At NancyDrewSleuth.com it says that in 1993 Mildred Benson (née Augustine) was officially and legally acknowledged by the owners of Nancy Drew as the author of books 1-7, 11-25, and 30.

45 some years ago, I was a die hard Nancy Drew reader. I wanted to be Nancy Drew when I grew up. Those books were a window on a time in the states which was golden. Nancy had money, a single Dad, a doting housekeeper. She had graduated high school, done a little college. She had done her duty: she and her two best friends, Beth and George, had hooked "nice" boys as potential husbands. Not quite engaged , but shyly committed. The boys ( around 20 yrs old) had to finish college and go to work, to achieve the right sort of financial status needed to properly look after a nice girl in classy surroundings Nancy had beautiful clothes, a fancy, fast car. And ... TITIAN hair!!! She spent her days pursuing her own fun, or doing charity work. She took her sleuthing seriously. And what's SHOCKING, her FATHER took her hobby seriously! Nancy Drew; forever young.

At 1:50, the girl in the middle with the big black hat is Joan Leslie.

Good clean fun!

I watched this the first time a couple years ago. Very enjoyable film. This time around I'm thinking - that coroners inquest hearing - that accused woman had no attorney and was not advised of her rights. She had a right to keep her mouth shut. To base this story on the assumption that she would have been charged with murder based only on circumstantial evidence following this hearing is stretching it.

I read every Nancy drew book ever wrote when I was a young girl. One summer I was really sick & in bed & I just read those books like crazy. Thank God for my gramma buying me those books. I wish I still had them. My mother threw them out. Bad move... they're probably worth money now as a set.

In its history, Nancy Drew has been portrayed by Bonita Granville, Tracy Ryan (1995 series), Pamela Sue Martin (Nancy Drew- Hardy Boys Mysteries) Maggie Lawson (Nancy Drew TV movie) and Emma Roberts (2007). I still prefer the books over any movie/TV show about our sleuth!

This movie is very funny and I'm only 24 minutes into it. Did anybody notice that she was put in bed and covered up with her shoes on? This is a must see Nancy Drew movie.

I was a readaholic as a kid. I went threw the Happy Holisters first. Then the Hardy Boys. Tom Swift was next read all our library had by the fifth grade i could not find anything good left so went on to the classics like Treasure island, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Count of Monte Cristo and David Copperfield. We were poor so could only get 2 TV channels.
