Nancy Wilson’s rhythm-guitar playing is under-sung hero of Heart’s sound. After auditioning for her sister Ann’s band with a performance of Yes’ “The Clap,” she transformed their sound-just check out the intro to “Crazy On You” to instantly hear the influence of her acoustic playing. And together, they transformed classic rock. On this episode, we talk about how Wilson’s acoustic and electric playing is the element that delivers the band’s signature sound. Lindsay Ell calls in to drop a line, and our hosts go shopping for Gibson Nighthawks and vintage Ovations.

Her influences to develop the intro of Crazy On You were a bit of Chet Akins' Windy and Warm but mostly Anji, originally by Davy Graham, but she specifically mentions Paul Simon's version that she learned as a kid. Here's audio of her playing both pieces as part of the Crazy On You intro live: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EnQ3MB6yZ4Y.html

Here's a link where she talks about her influences and shows how Anji inspired the intro to Crazy on You. I was lucky to be at that taping in NYC when I worked around the corner from where it was taped. Nancy was playing with that crazy pedal effect that made her acoustic sound like an airplane taking off. Not your typical acoustic show. I seen the Rolling Stones in the 70s outside CU Boulder, Bob Marley and Blackfoot open for them man was I drunk, but it was a great show no violence a few months before it was when the hell’s Angels caused the problem

I so agree on the open stadiums sounds way better. Been to Madison square garden and it sound awful. The sound is just dead and mix changes everywhere you go. I actually left 1 show cause it sounded so bad.
