An extraordinary window on to the heart of cosmopolitan Shanghai over a hundred years ago - a true melting pot of cultures. Today the city's main shopping hub, Nanjing Road is here bustling with crowds of Chinese and Europeans and patrolled by Sikhs who made up an important part of the international police force. It is the only known surviving example of the film reportage shot by British war correspondent Joe Rosenthal during his coverage of the Boxer Rebellion in China between 1900 and 1901.

Caste system: 1- no horse 🐎 or human to carry them. 2- you have a human for horse 3- You have a horse carriage (high class) 4- Foreigners

You underestimate the old Shanghai parliament...there is no casta system. After 1870, due to too many traffic accidents, the Shanghai Municipal Bureau stipulated that load of vehicles north of the Huangpu River should not exceed 600 pounds at a time, thus restricting dirty and unsafe transportation such as horse-drawn carriages to outside the urban area, leaving only rickshaws and bicycles.

@manojpandey7895
@manojpandey7895 7 месяцев назад
Raising horses requires vast land resources, although China have a vast land area of 9.6 million square kilometers, only 10 percent can be used for living, farming and animal husbandry. The remaining 90 percent are mountains, rivers and lakes. The Chinese must use their limited land more efficiently, so we tend to raise cattle, pigs and sheep, which resulted in a lack of horses in China since ancient times. Lacking horses, China has been under constant attack from the north since more than 2,000 years ago by nomads who blitzkrieg with cavalry. China built the Great Wall to keep out the cavalry from the north. Horses were also the main goods that the ancient northern nomads exported to China during peacetime. They exported horses to agricultural civilizations in exchange for salt, iron, and cloth, which the nomads lacked

roselyn rajoo You are looking at history backwards with a revisionist mindset and modern sensibilities From 1846 to 1919 the Sikhs and British were best friends. They fought together, exploited other nations and grew rich. In 1919 after the Great War, the act of a few British men led to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre which destroyed Anglo-Sikh relations and some Sikhs soon started joining the Indian cause for independence. My great grandfather Inder Singh was there in China around that time - 51st Sikhs - Frontier Force
