In this video I compare two popular bulb-style video lights: the Aputure B7C and the Nanlite Pavobulb 10C. They're both great problem-solvers but because of how they're powered, they require some consideration on how they're used.

Thanks for the tip with the E26 > AC... super handy, I had no idea this existed 👍🏼💡

Can be a lifesaver on set if you have an extension cord! Thanks for watching.

Sometimes you just gotta breathe! I find myself getting more and more energized when I'm setting up a shot. The heavy sigh was real, I had no intention of using it in the video, but it worked with the music I thought. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Subscribed:) I feel like the biggest deciding factor for me is that the illuminated side profile of the Aputure is a little more than 1/3 of a real light bulb and the Nanlite is around 1/2. I get that the flat top makes the Aputure more stable when you set it down, but it just doesn't look like a normal light bulb when it's on, even when it's inside a lamp shade. I understand they can't make one that is completely illuminated all the way to the base like a real light bulb, but it would be nice if a competitor made one that was at least 2/3 or so, maybe at the sacrifice of a little power.

The Pavobulb does indeed mimic a 'real' light bulb better. I still use both though, there are certain situations where having that internal battery can be a life-saver. Thanks for the kind comment and for watching!

No complaints with the Pavo bulbs so far. Versatility is a huge value for faster set ups and smaller crews shooting a bunch of different types of projects. It seems like Nanlite gives us versatility without unnecessary complexity.

Once they got the NanLink app sorted, I've been very pleased with all my Nanlite stuff. Over the course of a year, I migrated over to almost all-Nanlite lighting. Good stuff, good value. Thanks for watching.

@@MattSpaugh Yes. The app coming into its own was key. Also.. I like going with Nanlite for the price to performance value. I can use that savings to purchase modifiers. With Aputure it's heavy price wise without a drastic performance advantage.

Hi Matt, thank you for this video. From your experience, how is the fan noise on either one?
@MattSpaugh
@MattSpaugh Год назад
Neither of these bulbs have internal fans so noise is not a problem. Thanks for watching!

Great video. I really hate when my pavo tube goes off while shooting, that's why I also don't like the idea of a B7C to go off while shooting, it ruins the shot. Even when you have extras to replace, it still ruins the shot, and if it's a podcast/ live production - I can't even replace the light. Battery is important to me. Can the pavobulb NPF setup be noticeable if I place them in a lamp ? (when it's inside the shot)

The bottom of that NP-F unit has an E26/27 base, so you can totally hide it in a fixture that has that type of receptacle. Otherwise, you'll need to tape or zip-tie it in the fixture. It's not much bigger than a NP-F battery so depending on the size of the fixture, it's doable. Hope that helps, thanks for watching!

@@MattSpaugh Thank you for the info! I appreciate it. by the way, NYX by astera seems like a solid kit as well. I only seen B7C's on set so far

@@cinegrampro I'd like to try one of those for comparison. From what I've seen the body seems really big and the actual light area seems small. At this point Nanlite has finally worked the bugs out of their control app, and I find that I'm using the Pavobulb more as a result.

@@MattSpaugh I might go with nanlite again. I've been more than happy with their tubes. except connecting to the app which isn't as easy as it should be. and the indication of battery which is lying sometimes. I think they are perfect. I couldn't find any reason to buy astera titans which are way more expensive, unless the fast pixel changing is important for you. Also I think their 300B II is a 300D II killer. and I own the 300D II. Long story short, Nanlite is kinda killing it right now.
@MattSpaugh
@MattSpaugh Год назад
@@cinegrampro The 300B MkII is, MHO, the best bang for your buck out there. I use it on every single shoot I do. As far as the app goes, I had problems with it in the beginning but they seemed to have worked the bugs out. I get solid performance out of it every time these days. Have a good one!

I hate the B7c bulbs, they're the only truly bad Aputure product I've used. When they work, they're good, but the power and pairing modes refuse to work half the time. I've used 3 different B7c kits and each time half the bulbs just won't turn on or connect. I need to try the pavobulbs, or just stick with good ol' tungsten bulbs on dimmers.

Yeah, for all the hype, I've been disappointed with a number of Aputure offerings over the years. It did seem like the Sidus Link app was pretty stable, at least in my tests. Over the past couple of years I've migrated almost all of my lighting to Nanlite. They had some serious issues early on with the control app but once that was sorted, they've been really bullet-proof for me. I absolutely love the Forza 300B mk. II. It's a lot of light for the money. Thanks for watching!

@@MattSpaugh I can 100% relate to this comment. Have also just switched over completely from Aputure to Nanlite. The 300BmkII is great and seems to have nearly the same output as my previous Aputure 300D mkII and waaay more than the equivalent Aputure 300X.
