Meet The Gaffer #327. Here's my first look, and maybe yours too, at the Nanlux Evoke 2400B. I very briefly compare it to the Nanlux Evoke 1200B. I'll go into more detail in another episode and compare it to an HMI or two, but here I just wanted to start off with a quick comparison of raw output and talk a little about how we in North America need to be a little careful with the way we deal with amperage.

Can't wait to see you put this up against an M40. I've sold all my HMI so I can't do the comparison, and it's what everyone wants to know.
@GaffersSalon
@GaffersSalon 7 месяцев назад
Yeah exactly… at 20ft m40 specs at 681FC with just under 20ft beam width according to arri App… and a 52 degree beam angle in flood. Luke seems to be getting about 600FC at 20ft but with narrower beam width of 14ft with 45 degree dish… so it would appear the evoke is about what 2/3? of m40 at 5600? However, If I set beam width at flood to 14ft in arri app at full flood it’s 1323FC which puts unit an about 14.25ft away.

But doesnt an HMI have a better shadow cast than leds?
@gaffergear
@gaffergear 7 месяцев назад
@@ivancuetowicqI was interested in the shadows too.
@oliver_peng
@oliver_peng 7 месяцев назад
@@ivancuetowicq Shadow quality depends more on the optics than the underlying technology. Fresnels will give cleaner and more natural shadows than any reflector or open face because it's one light source. The shadows from M18/M40/M90 are not pretty due to the subject seeing the bulb + reflector (versus one source), but the same can be said for the shadows of these COB reflectors.
@cagf2013
@cagf2013 7 месяцев назад
@@oliver_pengthis is very true. Although in something like a Dedolight 1200w HMI, that level of sharpness/shadow quality is only possible due to the HMI bulb being a true point source with its 10mm arc gap. In my tests the Dedo 1200 is somewhere between a 750w and 1000watt LED equivalent in brightness but has the sharpness at full flood of a 60-80watt LED in bare COB configuration.

That's very impressive! 170fc for the 1200B to 600fc for the 2400B is a 1.8 stop increase, which is quite a bit more than the 1 stop increase you'd expect for doubling the power.

shoutout to Mrs Gaffer for the cameo in the kitchen (-: and 21amps would put my entire house in danger of going dark (South Africa, 220v 50Hz, 40 amps to the house, 30 amp breaker on the plug circuits, shared with the water heater etc, so if water heater is on you have to be careful what else you use at the same time)

Ha, ha, my wife said it felt like the sun was coming in the windows😉 If you have 220V coming out of the wall, you can run your units at roughly 10A +10A to spread the load over the two hots, right?

@@meetthegaffer - sorry, not split phase, 3 phase 220v in the street (usually overhead on poles), each house gets 1 phase, so every 3rd house is on the same phase. Businesses can get all 3 phases connected for a fee.

No it comes without, so you can choose. Normally I would probably go with a 60A bates and then have adapters to edison. This would allow me to go 220V as well.

But the Max Mode is only for safety on your amperage? Constant Mode Sounds Like It has a Boost Mode where you cant run it for very Long in. But Thats Not the case Right?
@meetthegaffer
@meetthegaffer 7 месяцев назад
I don’t know the official stance on the difference between Constant and Max. But experientially the Constant Output mode acts as a governor, capping your usage at 15A. The Max Output mode allows you to use the full capacity of the unit, up to 21A. It seems logical that you could keep the unit in Max mode as long as you like in order to get the most out of the unit.

Is the power supply smart? Can you power it 2 pole 220 or is it just 110V?
@meetthegaffer
@meetthegaffer 7 месяцев назад
Yes, you could plug a normally wired 15A Edison plug/end cap into a 220V powered receptacle. Or use a connector like a 60A Bates and feed it two hots and a ground.

@@meetthegaffer Great thankyou. I often run 220V down 60A whips. For this light I'd just use the 2500/220v trick to get full power off house if not doing a tie-in. Yeah I still do those. Again thank you.

Lighting is relative to many factors, but having a big gun is good for highspeed, for lighting larger areas, for larger, softer bounces from farther away. The real sun is bright, but we find ways to use it to our advantage😉
