Great video mate, defiantly make another video like this if you get the opportunity, its really nice to hear some insight from a long time animator, thanks for putting it together =]
Ajay, i really like to see a list of your favourite animated scenes in anime, not just super, that scene you credited him as his best work looked amazing
AnimeAjay Thank you for the work you put into these videos. There are so many out there of whom acknowledge the differences between animation aesthetics when it comes to the Dragonball franchise; yet so many lack the patience or time to do the research and present it the way you do in a cohesive and interesting manner. I am sure many followers of yours’ would appreciate an avenue or sorts to give back to you somehow. Let us know when you open up a Patreon! I would love to donate.
It's so great to see such a respected animator like Shida be able to talk about his work so freely. I'm surprised that he essentially said yamamuro was his least favourite character designer as well. And it's nice to hear his respect for uchiyama.
bruh! it took him this short to finish that 4 minutes animation of onepiece? thats frkkn amazing! also glad to see he likes the precure cuts of his work more than the rest, those are really stunning to look at
DBanimators inspirational but at the same time giving a quick real reminder that an animator (such as himself) would usually never enjoy working despite the incredible quality behind those works because of the ludicrous amount of difficulty they had to go through to ensure that quality. Hence why he stated if you love drawing, he feels that you're better off doing something else (so one might say inspirational but at the same time a little demotivating)
I'm glad he's so open to the fanbase! I sincerely hope the fans don't take his openness for granted. It's so interesting to hear about his beginnings and how long certain scenes take. It's nice to know he so supportive of the younger generation too:D
It's really sad to see that Shida doens't enjoy his work. He is a really talented and hard-working animator and one of my favourites, so it saddens me to know that, for whatever reason, he can't enjoy what he does for a living.
I might be wrong since I don't know the guy ,but a lot of artist are very critical of their own work. He wouldn't be a animator if he didn't enjoy his job but he's probably just never satisfied with what he puts out.
All artists hate their work because they feel it can be better. People tell me my drawings are great, but I see a hundred things wrong with it. Not nearly on the same level, but I hope that gets the point across.
I am waiting for an episode where shida and takahashi are animation supervisors yes in 122 he did story board but i want him to animate with takahashi art style in dbs
They did back in 110. Takahashi animated the stare down between UI Goku and Jiren in the sky, and the blast that sent Jiren down to the ground. Then immediately after, Shida animated the part where Goku flies towards Jiren to end the fight with a punch, and gets blasted back by Jiren
If you're thinking of doing another animator spotlight, do you think you could do Karasawa? I feel people aren't crediting him enough and just merging his work with Takahashi. I liked this video a lot, thanks for the effort of translating this!
Man, i would love if he, yuya takahashi and naoki tate would work together, with yuya as supervising artist. Just imagining the smooth movement of naoki tate with the adjusted character models of yuya takahashi... the possibilities!
Shida answered 2 of my questions I was so happy 😃😃😃😃 those questions weren't in this video though. I asked what he would wish for if he had the super dragon balls, I also asked what his favorite one piece scene is that he animated.
6:28 - 7:09 Many animators work a lot of overtime/weekends and it's rare for there to be any overtime. At least in 2D studios. With that being said, I'm very surprised that they are unionized over there. I'd like to see that in NA to a certain extent, but that would pretty much destroy the industry and companies would instead look to outsource far more than they already do. I chuckled when he said he never enjoys working. Many animators, never mind such a talented man like Naotoshi, eventually become jaded with the industry and it becomes just another job over time. It's very unfortunate, but the unforgiving schedules/overtime can take their toll on you. With that being said, if you work towards it and become very skilled at it, then you'll likely do well for yourself. Definitely not something I would push anyone towards and I'm glad to see Naotoshi being real about it as well.
It's not the first time someone from studio openly dislikes character designs in DBS. My question is why they won't discuss this matter in meetings with Yamamuro and higher-ups? They could design new looks while working on the last arc in DBS (the one after Tournament of Power) and then finish DBS. Prepare schedule and animation for new DB series during the break and then start something closer in art quality to DBZ.
My theory is that the new designs aren't as detailed as the older ones and are thus a bit quicker to animate, couple this along with the insane amount of projects that Toei has under their belt at the moment and it is kind of obvious why they would stick with the newer designs but still, I wish Toei would just focus a bit more on Super and give the animators a bit more time to deliver the goods.
TheRealDal If we're being real here, DBS IS a kids show after all. I don't think the kids themselves let alone toei cares THAT much about the character design.
10:15 Looks like Shida got his wish since Naohiro Shintani, one of Toei's younger key animators, is taking over as animation supervisor (and possibly character designer) for the upcoming movie.
I’ll be honest, if it means fixing the schedule, I would totally be fine with Super taking a brief hiatus or something. So long as we got some quality animation, I think sacrificing a couple weeks to a month or so would be perfectly fine and understandable.
Midnight Twister that is if you can. Fuji Tv is paying them for DBS every week. If you take it off air, they’ll have to replace it with another show and the chance of them using the same animators to work on that show is high, hence the hiatus would mean nothing. The only way is to find a different team that’s not part of Toei to supply a show for a certain length on the 9.00 am timeslot while the DBS team gets ahead of schedule. And to take a show off air when it’s making so much money is unlikely. Unless the animation committee decides to sacrifice their profit for the short term to reduce the cost of each episode in the future by improving the schedule, hence reducing the amount of people working on an episode.
That question on Maeda has such an easy answer... and the other one aswell. Great video insightful. He's done some of the most epic one piece moments, I wished this q and a had a couple specific questions concerning his other works, it's just I don't think dbsuper is the king these days.
That'll probably take 2 much time and it will be to difficult to force out so unless he gets help im sure he can do it but if hes just by himself i dont think so.
This is why Shida is my favorite animator. I believe his work is the perfect example of how shading and extreme detail is possible to be put together and it came to my surprise that he actually does not enjoy working.
its ashame that flying isnt allowed in the tournament, his animation really does focus on fluent fights in the air. and i really wanted to see some badass teamwork like he did with Goku Trunks vs Black Zamasu. imagine if he animated the first episode of the tournament where everyone is charging at each other. you saw how fluent that dragon scene was, imagine drawing 20 fighters
It was really interesting to hear from actual DBS creators! Great video! I think you should try to interview or get some answers from others too like Tate or Takahashi. That would be insane...
Jonas unfortunately Tate doesn’t have a twitter account. And probably for the best specially when the general audience can become dickheads and harass the guy just because they don’t like his style.
I (and I'm sure many others) want to hear a Q&A with TAKAHASHI! He's the hero the Dragon Ball series needs, AND deserves! I understand he's a freelance animator... So maybe he just doesn't want to have to deal with Yamamuro's strict design bullshit if he doesn't have to.... Taking pot shots there, but I just REALLY wanna know more about him and why he doesn't just do Dragon Ball Super all the time lol.
i'd totally be down for a video that breaks down the Dragon Ball art style i.e. a study on Shida's/Takahashi's/Tate's style personally i'd like to learn Takahashi's style i.e. his eyes, head shape, etc
I said that people who "go out and achieve their dreams" are my heroes, or something like that but that makes it sound like I'm taking it for granted that successful people are happy. You can never get the dream job because it's just that: something in your head. The real thing is much more of a mixed bag. That nagging thought that you should be working somewhere else is all but inescapable. Still, I would hope that these people understand that I admire them if they could hear me.
Fuck, one of the best animators ever doesn't appreaciate his own work, due to difficulty xD. That must mean something because literally every scene he does seems near perfect to me haha.
We need another episode with Shida and Tate! I loved that one episode they worked on together... I want to say it was episode 63? Correct me if I'm wrong
Adrian Lopez Shida didn’t work on 63. They worked together on 66 though Tate’s contribution was very minimal. The did work together on episode 95 though, the Frieza episode. Tate didn’t do much animation but he did supervise. Shida on the other hand storyboarded it and did the last scene
It's cool ! I'd like to hear more people like him do Q&A but I guess they don't have that much time. By the way where did you get these remastered OST ?
Anime Ajay So did Shida do that amazing ass fight sequence with Freeza x Goku and 17 during the finale fight with Jiren? This guy is truly legit awesome, i love all his work, but I always wondered about that final sequence I wasn't aware of it looked like his style. Cheers, I'm a new subscriber, been watching your videos all weekend much love, so many interesting facts about Animation on DB as a whole, you rule thanks for taking the time to do such.
Ahh okay, wow even better cause that was my favorite in the entire tournament I truly respected that segment. And just from seeing his work in the upcoming movie I really should of known. Thank you man!!
