Join us on a tour around the lovely seaport city of Napier on the North Island of New Zealand. 🇳🇿
Home to fine wineries, outstanding restaurants, quaint cafes, fabulous boutique shops, and a collection of Sea Wall murals, Napier is probably one of the most intriguing cities we’ve visited in New Zealand.
In 1931, a massive earthquake destroyed the commercial center of Napier and killed over 260 people. Rebuilding started immediately, and the new buildings reflected the architectural styles of the early 20th century - Stripped Classical, Spanish Mission, and Art Deco.
Our first stop in Napier was the Faraday Museum of Technology. It was a hands-on museum and reminded us of the one dedicated to Nikola Tesla that we saw in the Balkans.
The girls were so excited to find a book full of old, original recipes. They took a bunch of pictures hoping to recreate some of that healthy deliciousness later!
Then, we decided to grab a quick bite, and like the Kiwis that we are now, we had a meat pie hiding in the shade by Napier’s waterfront.
Next, we went to Bay Skate Park and since the girls had never done skating before, we thought this would be a great place to start.
All that skating under the scorching sun (it was one of the hottest days of the summer), gave us the perfect opportunity to stop for a coffee and ice cream break.
Another attraction we couldn’t miss was the National Aquarium of New Zealand. We signed in, got our maps and we were ready to explore. The place was magnificent… we saw a lizard that runs on water, hung out with the smallest penguins in the world, and even touched a Kiwi bird egg and feather. So cool, right?
But the fun didn’t stop there. Our next adventure took us to the Art Deco Center, and this activity was amazing! We glammed up like the movie stars from the 1930s and went on a ride in a vintage car. Our lovely driver made a few stops, among which were the Napier Municipal Theater and the National Tobacco Company building, both rebuilt right after the earthquake.
The history of the latter is connected to the interesting story of a man called Gerhard Husheer who is considered one of the fathers of Napier.
This tour was a true delight, but it was time for dinner, so we looked (and found) some delicious pizza and also checked out the famous Victorian buildings known as “Six Sisters”.
On Day 2, we went to a minigolf course for some fun under the scorching sun. There were two options - long shots and obstacle courses - and we chose the latter.
After our minigolf session, it was time for Take 2 of the Art Deco Center, where we saw a 20-minute show that explained everything that happened in the Napier area. It was a great way to learn something new and hide from the heat, for only $5.
So, what did you think of Napier, New Zealand? Let us know in the comments below.

Napier and I have a history, I worked there after I arrived home from my OE; two years in Toronto Canada. I lived on the Parade, actually rented one of the six sister houses (Something I didn't know). Met my husband to be there, a couple if years later moved to Rotorua . This would have been around 1967/69. . . I see a lot has changed since then. Kiwi from Virginia

@@GrowingUpWithoutBorders Went to Toronto to met a pen friend I had been writing to for many years. One of my reasons for coming here to be with my son and also to be close to her. But she passed the year I arrived out here and before we could get together. Last time I saw Sandy and her daughter, they came out to NZ to stay with me. I drove them to Napier and onto Wellington on a round trip back to Rotorua. Taking one week of their two week stay. Drove them also around the Bay of Plenty on day trips and much of Rotorua. Great memories. Almost life long friends, she was eighteen when we started writing and I was sixteen. Other than the winters I loved Canada and its people so much like us Kiwis.

Oh yes NZ is a super clean country. Which country are you from? I guess it starts with each and every person and probably teaching it in the schools. When I was younger and in school in Canada, there was a big push about educating all the kids to recycle and the importance of not littering etc... I think this really helps.

@@GrowingUpWithoutBorders I'm from South Africa, it really is a weak country because of the way it's governed and the general culture. The land itself is beautiful. Hawkes Bay-great to visit (so long as you dont piss off any of the many angry locals who will attack you without notice) but terrible place to live. Corruption and cronyism make dealing with any government agency impossible. The people are the worst in the country for narking on each other and ruining each others reputations with poisonous rumours and gossip which is spread without the slightest care as to whether its true or not. No community culture exists in HB other than the tall poppy culture of destroying anyone makes more effort. Again ok to visit for short time but definately not to live.

Awww it sounds like you've had a bad experience there. Sorry to hear. Definitely a beautiful place to discover.
