In the first interview, Henry complained about Nardwuar talking about shit that happened 13 years ago. This interview happened 13 years after the first one.
If Nardwuar ever interviewed me for anything I'd have to really try hard to pretend he wasn't already one of my favorite people in the world. He is the king of separating the cool people from the "cool" people. I love it.
@@SpaceTimeManipulatorSTM I think everyone’s who has seen his interviews dream about getting interviewed. I don’t think I’d be able to pretend how much he has inspired me and influence on me.
This is prime GENIUS level interviewing. To stay on a subject for 13 years to re-interview them knowing they are a hard case. Then through persistence opening them up to where they actually crack a smile and share of themselves. Bravo Nardwuar!!
Henry and Nardwuar have both grown up so much since the famous original hilarious interview in the 90's. I hope Nardwuar didn't eat McDonalds for breakfast again
Nardwuar has an insane memory... How can you have all those questions & information just preloaded & retain composure like that? Unbelievably sharp guy
Henry Rollins is a tricky man he is. Very astute and observant yet self depricating and humble. He doesnt say much, yet he states his case and tells you what he is thinking. Nardwar is a very crafty individual who at most amuses Henry. But its all relative. If you watch the other interview this seems more tame and relaxed. Just another genius example of humans interacting.
His tattoo on Sons of Anarchy actually said "I Kill N*******". I haven't watched that show in years but something like that is difficult to forget. And yes, it was fake.
His impression of Nardwuar from the first interview cut so deep yet his follow up was so endearing and words spoken of an older, wiser person at peace with himself and the world. This is the most fascinating interview I’ve seen. I also chuckled when he told Nardwuar you saddled me with extra weight to carry over borders.
Having watched/listened to many hours of Rollins talking over the years I’ve realized he takes pride in his comprehensive memory of the specific addresses of old practice spaces, recording studios, LA streets he used to jog on with Bill Stevenson, the first time he played every city he goes to, etc. This interview offers many opportunities to watch his eyes glaze over as he attempts to retrieve some arcane bit of trivia from his past.
To be honest, Henry wasn't that bad in this interview. You can tell he didn't want to do it, but he wasn't a total jerk, just a bit reserved. I've seen him be a way bigger prick in other interviews.
Paul Lopez The kid was a self righteous prick from a punk fanzine setting Henry up to give him a "gotcha" interview about him and Flag being a bunch of sell outs...Henry immediately knew what he was doing and starting fucking with him. A band that lived hand to mouth sleeping in vans and fan houses having to borrow gas money from the show promoters don't really like being called sell outs by snot nosed "fans" living off mommy and daddy.
I'd love to see a tv show where Henry is forced to live with Nardwuar in a beach house on a tropical island and the cameras record their day to day interactions.
Henry seems like one of those people that are utterly insufferable to get along with unless you have some kind of connection over some niche interest and then you become best friends and he’s unendingly loyal
james Doctor I have drummer friend just like that when I met him he was the most insufferable, miserable, sarcastic asshole that didn’t have anything good to say about anything or anyone. Got to know him and he turned into one of the most loyal, generous people ever. It’s almost like people like that are trying you on for size before they buy
@@halosrusty Youre probably fake as shit judging by your response. Henry is just real and protective of his energy and wants to know if someone is worth investing time into or not. Most people are assholes you got to understand this so when henry gets controntational, its more so him prodding at someones mind to see what makes them passionate. He is getting to the bottom of where people stand in life right away instead of the bullshit small talk that normally happens which reveals nothing about ones character. Small talk is a more comfortable conversation to be had but confronting someone puts them in a more lethargic state where they will show their true nature by their response. He just is sick of peoples bullshit and want to be straight up with them so he speaks his mind and hopes the other person do the same. He was an real big asshole back in the day I agree but he really grew as a person. I hated henry rollins when I was younger listening to black flag but he really got over himself and his personal development is something I commend and give respect too. IM guessing your young af or an old douche bag.
Kezia Naomi I couldn’t be bothered to read all that wannabe psychologist bs. You’re just some young “people are complex and there’s always some deeper reason behind the way people act” Coffee shop social science drop out. The dudes a oaf but I respect you for trying to defend him. Someone’s got to I suppose as he clearly lacks the intellect to understand Nardwuar.
Kezia Naomi oh and for age 30 so either young af or old af depending on your age. I’ve been around long enough to know some people are just dicks becuase they can be. I don’t want to hear some hypothesized back story as to how he came to be the person he is. I’ve met a lot of people that have been through some crazy things in their lives and don’t act the way this dude does. Seems to me he has a classic rockstar full of himself mentality which is fine. He is more than welcome to be who he is and I’m more than welcome to think he’s still a cunt. Have a nice day ✌🏼
Whoa, Mind blown! This needs to happen. You need to become a Hollywood producer, Henry as Batman and Nardwuar as the Joker would be the best casting of all time.
I like how Henry Rollins traveled the world since he last saw Nardwuar and his big takeaway is that Nardwuar isn't so bad. That's a f*cking redemption arc if I've ever seen one
+Flavio Rocha Eh I don't think he really cares all that much. When Nardwuar asked if he was stilling wasting his life, Henry's like "If this is the path you've carved out for yourself, it can't be any better or any worse than what I've done for myself." Pretty safe and diplomatic answer without revealing his true feelings about it. I still think he secretly looks down on Nardwuar or at least doesn't really see the point of what he's doing.
Yeah, he always seems really serious in average situations, so even in moments here like when Nardwuar breaches 'the last interview' and it gets a little weird, especially "I appreciate your interest" which came off as cold as anything he said, it's still just kinda par-for-the-course for Rollins. Nardwuar definitely knows how to push his buttons deftly as well and then switch subject.
The end sequence for both his interviews proves that statement. First interview he does the "doot doot" by headbutting the mic and here he fucking goes with the end pose joke and even clearly has fun with it
I actually saw him in that show before I knew he was in Black Flag, and yeah that seems to be the truth I can only see a handful of pics with it on him
Why? Because he's sincere and curious? Any interview I've seen involving Nardwuar and someone who treats him like shit says more about the person being interviewed.
Suba If you listen to his spoken word albums, specifically _Nights Behind the Tree Line_, you see he has a sense of humor, it's just incredibly dark and ironic. You also get a sense of how truly depressed he is.
They haven't had any contact since the last interview in 1998... Henry's comedy is so well hidden behind that cold persona that most people don't seem to notice it.
The look at 15:53 says it all, Henry respects the heck out of Nard, he’s in character like Nard is. It’s hilarious to watch and really makes things more hilarious if you watch the video back and see that he doesn’t crack til the very end lol
I reckon the last couple of questions amused Henry. He tried to turn the questions back at Nardwar which Nardwar deflected, including his final question, do doo da loo do..? And then Rollins tried to hold the pose longer than Nardwar, failed, and then tried to crack Nardwar out of character again, failed...leaving Rollins once again .. slightly impressed
It's oddly heartwarming. I genuinely expected Henry would become annoyed and walk off. Seeing Henry roll with the bit completely until he cracked and smiled was... a pleasant surprise. The respect you mention is pretty clear from that point on. I know Rollins's personality has softened _a lot_ over the years, and I say that as a high compliment. I'm a huge fan of his recent stand-up, spoken word, and talks/lectures, etc. He's someone I've grown to respect and admire. I know his anger hasn't disappeared, but he uses it differently and it's helped him become a more mature and understanding human being. Still, the end of the interview had me feeling pretty tense for a moment 😬... but then Rollins gave _that_ look, and I realized there was nothing to be concerned about. No bad blood there at all. Just respect.
“13 years has given me a chance to travel the world and to see many things, many countries, many continents and at this point I think I can't really sit in judgement of anybody, seeing what I’ve seen failing and passing as I have and so I say at this point to each his own, if this is the path you’ve carved out for yourself, it can’t be any better or any worse than what I’ve done for myself” - Henry Rollins
There are people who figure this out LONG before they get grey hair. Funny how a "punk legend" took that long to realise people have the right to be who they are, huh?
Henry Rollins is like a wild animal that is also very cute, like a possum or raccoon, where you wanna pick it up and hug it, but know that this is simply not a viable option.
This interview is pure gold, i personally love how Henry is dead serious throughout it yet at the very end even he can't help but smile at nardwuar's frozen pose lmao
many thank's to Nardwaur for the great plug but I must point out that the mp3 file compression algorithm was actually developed (I believe) by Karlheinz Brandenburg at the Fraunhofer Institute. I had no part in it's development contrary to what it claims in the Chris Walters book, but what the hell eh, could be an urban legend in the making.
Hmmm i took to google to do some research on that fact. Couldn't find anything, so I took to the comments next and glad I found this. Thanks for the input directly from the source! Question everything!
I got a lot of respect for the man. Hes a hard worker, and he's had an interesting life that he can talk eloquently about. Half the time I think hes a cunt, the other half I relate to him more than anyone else.
I don’t think people realize how sarcastic Henry is. Him being rude to you is a sign of admiration. If he didn’t like you he probably wouldn’t even talk to you .
@@Wowbagger86 - ZOMFG yeah, or Narduar playing the Joker as some delirious fanboy who just *has* to get Batman Rollin's attention with various insane heists and 5h!t. That would be great.
It's interesting to see how time has sort of tempered Henry; how he's still unapologetically himself, yet seems unburdened by his past anger. You gotta respect people who stand by their convictions and beliefs, and that's why I have the utmost respect for both Nardwuar and Henry.
start the sentence "Danzig sues" in your google search bar and prepare to have your screen filled with a drop down tab. Henry can at least be funny and self-aware at times. He has his dick moments, and definitely finds Narduar trivial, but he isn't always that way. To my knowledge, despite having more legitimate reasons to seek litigation than Glenn in some instances, Rollins hasn't sued anyone (much less his entire band over a logo that they all stole from a b-movie to begin with).
I love how Henry just patiently tolerates the interview but Nardwuar finally gets him at the end. It isn't often that media actually makes Rollins laugh! (Ok, a laughing smile, a smirk, but for Henry it is almost the equivalent of ROTFLMAO).
I want to dislike Rollins but something about him makes me think he is sorta on the spectrum, he's very honest and you can see his nicer side spill out throughout the interview.
He has done a stand-up comedy special before. He is extremely animated and happy. He described himself as "unnervingly polite and capably violent." If his story is real, then it's because he some intense ADHD.
