Both the Narex Richter Chisels and the WoodRiver are good mid priced chisels. They are both very good and I'm sure that nobody's work would suffer through using them.
I decided to stick with the Narex and sell the WoodRiver and I personally like the Narex a little better and you get one more chisel in the set and a decent storage box.

Oh, I love your 'No BS' review. There is so much nonsense spoken about chisels in other reviews and at the end of the day its down to if you have more money than sense go spend it!! I have been woodworking for about 60 years and have never spent hours preparing the backs of chisels and I don't think it has affected the accuracy of my joints. I still love my vintage tools and have only worn one chisel down in length in all that time. I'm sure if you have money to spare it's quite nice to buy the most expensive tools but it doesn't necessarily mean you will be a better woodworker. Great video and really good review.

Wow, very generous David. Thank you. I'm very easy about how people should prep their own tools. But raise a burr, remove a burr and we're done 👍

I’m fairly sure Narex are Czech. Long tradition of engineering in Czech Republic so no surprise they’ll be quality.

I have a set of Narex chisels from the 80’s from my late dad. They are good quality, especially for their price point.

I never really gave much consideration to chisel balance. I was always much more concerned with how they felt in hand while being used. My favorite have been the Stanley 750/Lie Nielsen style handles. They always seemed to me to be easiest to use for fine work. At that, those chisels were at one time used for general carpentry work…I suppose some carpenters still use them. But if I’m taking a notch out of a floor joist I’d much rather have a general purpose chisel with a thick plastic handle.

Hi Bill! As you've highlighted, comfort is the big factor. If the chisel suits us and we like to use the tool that's 90% of the battle taken care of. Good steel is important but comfort is King.

Tools that come in nice fitted boxes are problematic for me. Its impractical to keep tools in boxes as far as I am concerned and feel guilty throwing the box away!

I know where you're coming from. I think for someone starting out it can be useful for keeping them safe though.

I bought mine and chose the option to get them in a canvas roll instead and you get 6 chisels. 3, 6, 10, 13, 19, 25mm.

You can buy the Narex individually. I bought the entire range of sizes without canvas roll or box and it turned out to be cheaper.

Looks and feel are one thing. How flat and square are the backs? How did they perform parring and chopping tasks?
@faceedgewoodworking
@faceedgewoodworking Год назад
Hi Joseph. The backs referenced properly with the stone to remove a burr. I'm not part of the flat back society. Both worked fine. I did a follow up on the Richters. Great value but I prefer my old chisels for reasons of weight and balance.

What would balance matter when half the time you are holding the chisel somewhere close to the edge or halfway down the steel?
@faceedgewoodworking
@faceedgewoodworking 2 года назад
I hope I covered this, but it's been a while since I did the video. Balance changes throughout the life of a chisel, unless it's crazy, off, I don't see it as an issue.

So which would you choose? Narex or Ashley Iles?
@faceedgewoodworking
@faceedgewoodworking 2 года назад
So difficult! Both are great. The Ashley Iles are wonderful because those guys grind and finish them freehand, the Narex because they embrace technology. I guess AI because of the hand finishing 🤷‍♂️

@@faceedgewoodworking Reason I ask is I have a set of Narex bench chisels. Their first ones they came out with. I like them, but I would prefer a smoother handle like these 2 you reviewed.

The problem with the Narex is the extreme polish all around. They went way, way overboard and managed to round the side edges on all of them. I've seen this mentioned numerous times, and certainly on mine there was as much as a 1/64th radius on the sides, which made getting right into corners impossible. Also, the polish on the backs was a complete waste of time as the backs were not any flatter than some cheap chisels I've used that cost 1 fifth the cost. The steel is good, but no better than any others of similar cost, no matter what some youtubers have tried to say. Narex could take a hint from Veritas PM-V11 or Blue Spruce Optima on how to make a back of a chisel flat. As far as balance, that's 99% a joke unless you have some ridiculously constructed handle. Handle shape is more of an indicator of comfort than most any other consideration.

I’ve seen the polishing issue mentioned a lot.. is there something similarly priced you’d recommend? Really can’t spring for the IBC or lie-Nielsen

Stop lying to yourself. 95% dont know how to work a chisel. So it doesnt matter. Of the rest 5%, some know what to choose and that they do. Brands and all that doesnt mean anything. Work with the tool does.

Make it little more in-depth personal touch if you had to choose one Your personal thoughts on use which one you preferred like holding sharpness ease of sharpening length comfort shape of chisel while using vibration socket vs tang etc.
@faceedgewoodworking
@faceedgewoodworking 2 года назад
@@plumbum6558 Thanks, that's really helpful feedback. Chisel vibration is not something I've experienced and both these felt great. In terms of holding an edge they are both respectable and for me, my sharpening process is very fast, I just keep the edge good. Neither failed in a serious way. Personally I like Narex more. A higher level of finish and made in a European factory with a tradition of making good tools. But equally, the project at hand doesn't care and both allow a woodworker no excuses for bad tools.
