Hello, I know this is an older video ( I hope you’ll see my comment) but I just have to say THANK YOU so much! By far the best fit issue tutorial that I’ve seen . I am so thankful that you so graciously share your years of experience and knowledge with us online😊. You have saved me so much trouble with this tutorial , you have no idea😅💐 💕
I am new to making clothes and have narrow shoulders. This looks so much easier than doing a full bust adjustment. I can't wait to try this, it's genius!
Thank you so much. I have struggled for a long time when home sewing - having narrrow shoulders and a large middle section. I tried your method and hallelujah - it worked! As a consequence, it is the best piece of clothing I have ever made! Thank you. I will be using this method from now on - always!
@@dorothysdaughtersews I'm actually just toiling the laneway dress and think I may need to retrace with your instructions but we will see. Your technique is so obvious in hindsight but I never thought to do it. I was drawing a shorter shoulder line and blending the curve to meet the underarm where I needed but of course this changes the shape and length of the curve!
Thank you so much for this quick, easy tutorial. I battle gaping, low necklines and armscye in sleeveless tops. I wonder if I need this and a petite adjustment...will start taking the shoulder measurements too.
I cannot thank you enough for this! I've spent my whole life thinking I had a screwed up body, not knowing other people have these same issues with clothing. I've made my own clothes for years, and while I managed to make some adjustments, like grading out to a bigger waist and in for narrower hips, and shortening bodices for my short torso, I only recently learned how to properly lower bust darts and about sloping and forward shoulder adjustments. But still I had the gaping neck issue with a many patterns, and this fixed it, and so stinkin' easily! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thank you so much for this video, it is very clear. Since you make your husband's shirts and maybe pants, can you later have a series of videos explaining also how to alter patterns to sew men's clothes. Thank you if you can, I love how you are explaining how to alter women's and children's clothes, but out there there are not many videos with practical tips on sewing for men. Again thank you so much for all the videos you make. Have a great week!
@@dorothysdaughtersews thank you so much for the videos! I am learning a lot from them and thank you for considering the men's sewing videos! I will be looking out for them too.
What an excellent tutorial! Thank you for sharing your know how...very generous of you. Keep them coming, please. Prayers for more success for you (and for us, in that order). God bless you and yours,
Hi from England. This is great for me and I didn't realise that I should do it, my sleeves are usually too tight so I have just done a narrower seam which doesn't really fix it. I also have to do an actually narrow should adjustment because my shoulders are narrow and sleeves will hang over the end of my shoulder if I don't. Don't we find out our peculiar body measurements when we make our own clothes. This just shows how unique we all are. Thank you for doing these videos.
Thank you! And yes, sewing is an exercise in learning our unique shapes. It opens a lot of fashion possibilities when we know how to fix fit problems :-)
This is so very helpful! Now have to figure out what part to change when I have a yoke on the back, so the armsceye starts on the yoke, then finishes on the back piece. Hope I figured it out. Thanks again!
Here is what I would do. I would put the two pattern pieces together and secure them with temporary tape or pattern weights. Overlap the seam allowance. Then proceed with the adjustment as if it were one piece. When you separate the pieces, you will have the curve needed on both pieces. I may try to demonstrate that on a short video.
I will try this, today I worked on Mccalls 6696 shirt dress. The sleeves were hanging off my shoulders and so uncomfortable. I have never sewn set in sleeve that worked for me. Still on the hunt to fix the issue. Thanks have a great day!
I’m a new viewer and recent subscriber-enjoying your videos so much. So sorry to hear of the loss of your husband. A sudden, unexpected death is very difficult. You seem to be doing well. Lost my husband to cerebral aneurysm 13 years ago. It helps to be aware that grief healing does not follow an upward trajectory- it’s more like a roller coaster- up days and down days. Allow yourself the gift of time. A question for you: how do you do the narrow shoulder adjustment if you are already using the smallest pattern size?
Thank you for this info. I have been using the smaller size according to my upper bust for a while and a full bust adjustment but my arm scye was either too small if I used the smaller size or too big. I think this will correct my problem. Off to try it right now!
Wow! This is amazing. I struggle with this problem and have tried all kinds of adjustments with no real success. Thanks for sharing. BTW, I love the Bible verse. I will find a way to have it in sewing studio.
Thank you Kim! I will. find this tutorial very helpful. I have forward pointing shoulders, but that correction still leaves me with gaping at the front. Perhaps a combination of remedies is required. I shall try!
Thank you so much. I love Grainline Studio patterns but I always have neckline/shoulder issues, not huge but not perfect. I couldn’t figure out how to change without altering the sleeve. Linden Sweatshirt, here I come.
Thank you for this, I’ve been doing it differently, this looks easier! If you are also doing a forward shoulder adjustment, which one would you do first? This one?
Kim, thank you for your video, it was easy to follow and I’ve completed the alteration to my Love Notions Classic Tee Full Bust. I was wondering if the sleeve pattern needs to change. My shoulder is XS but my body is L which is quite a big difference. I’m thinking I won’t change the sleeve and stick with the L size without alteration. Do you know if this will work?
This tutorial was great, but I also have thinner arms and go up several sizes from bust to protruding waist to hips. It looks like a 16 to 22/24. The pattern I'm working with is sized 18- 24. Is it possible to use this technique in reverse to size down to a 16 at the shoulders without making the armscye too large?
Everything falls off my shoulders. I’m making a toile for a tunic pattern and this seems a simple bit effective solution. Do you reposition the dart after changing the neckline or does it not matter?
Kim, I'm doing a narrow shoulder adjustment but not sure if it's enough. Can you clarify where the sleeve and body should meet at the shoulder? Is it close to the bone that you can feel? Perhaps at the outer part of your bra strap or further out where your shoulder rounds into your upper arm? thx!
Hi, Heide- I think it is a little subjective, but for me, it’s when the neckline feels right and the sleeve/bodice joint is right at my shoulder joint. It all depends on it feels and looks to you.
@@dorothysdaughtersewsHi Kim, thanks - good to know there is wiggle room for where the seam should fall. After making the adjustment the seam is on the edge of where my arm begins and about 1.5" from the joint in my shoulder (where my bra strap aligns). It would look better even 1/2" further in. What would be the best approach for further adjusting? Shall I go down another size and re-do the narrow shoulder adjustment to the larger arm or is there another option? BTW, the larger arm fits perfectly and it is a true joy to have a proper length! 😊
If you have a pattern with no smaller sizes on it can you use the point of your shoulder for the armscye and just put the neck up a little at the front?
Hello Kim from France :D, i came across your video thinking that i had to do a narrow shoulder but based to your explanation, i don't think i have to. (but it helps me a lot, i understand better when to do that). I still quite stuck because i made a toile for a fitted dress but when i raised for example my arms, i ended wit fabric that hangs across the front bodice , and i need to replace the dress after it rides up. Do you have some advice please ? i dont know what to do thanks a lot Ndollo
Hello! What a great question. Without seeing exactly what is going on, to me it seems as if somewhere around the armscye it is too tight. If I were to make an educated guess, I would say you need a broad back adjustment, which would give you arms enough room to move and allow the garment to not get “stuck” in the wrong places. Anyway, that’s what I would try next with a toile. Unless you are in need of an FBA? If so, I would try that first. I can demonstrate a way to do the broad back adjustment at the end of this Friday’s Sewing School Video.
In doing a bit more thinking and delving into my,fit references, you may also need a full bicep adjustment to give more room in the arms. Another, less scientific thing to try is to add an equal, amount to the sleeve width and side seams. It would widen both your under arm area and your sleeve width. That is very simple to do. The good news after a lot of trial and error, you will know your body and how to fix that on every blouse and dress going forward.
@@dorothysdaughtersews thanks you for your reply. I have already done a Broad back adjustment and FBA . but maybe i did not explain the problem very well :/ . Can i send you a picture on Instagram or Facebook ?
I would like to know how to grade pants from a larger waist to smaller hips... example waist from 22 waist to 16 ...I tried and worked it out but could have been neater...
I appreciate all your work on this, I know it isn't easy to make a video, but with the 2 errors you made with which sizes you were tracing and the shadow of the numbers coming through the tracing paper, I just got frustrated. Not wanting to be mean but maybe you should consider re-doing this and mentioning what to do if a person has small upper arms and narrow shoulders, but large bust.
I’m very sorry I frustrated you. You are right: it’s not easy. I did correct the error when I misspoke. If you have small arms and narrow shoulders, this is not the the adjustment for you. You should do a full bust adjustment on a smaller size.
