Yes, it is a cruck house and these are part of the main structure of the house. Originally the ridge of the roof would have been where the apex of the crutch frame is but it has been extended upwards at some time to give higher 1st floor.

Hi again Katherine, great to see you are watching our other waterways adventures. Yes we used this measurement method when we were in France and a river flooded overnight, we had to get up every 1/2hr to check it. It got within 2 inches of coming over the top, we were the only people on boats in the marina on that night, it was very scary. The marina manager had put us in charge of checking... LOL. So we are well versed at it. x

When you get to the River Trent, assuming your are turning left you will go through the two locks by Swales Marina, a short distance on and the River Derwent enters from your right, with all the rain we have been enjoying the flow on the Derwent will be quite strong and force you over to the left, keep as far right as you can as on the left is a large wall that you will otherwise head into, the scary thing is your boat will possibly start to lean over due to the strong water flow. Safe journey.

You boat has at least another 18” under the water before it could float onto the towpath!

Hi Gill thanks for your comment we appreciate you taking the time to message us. Yes we know about the other 18" but its still a scary thought, we've seen a few boats come over!!

Dancing on a bollard to avoid wet feet was a dangerous stunt that could have ended badly. I am retired & writing this from a narrowoat. I last cruised the Soar in 83, have my helmsmans certificate & several years experience cruising the inland waterways. But.......... A few weeks ago I got it wrong at a lock. Perhaps because I had covered nearly 30 miles & 25 locks within a couple of days travelling from dawn till it was too dark to continue in order to get to my destination asap as I had other business to take care of. I was very tired & a couple of locks shy of my destination. I sustained serious head & chest injuries before ending up in the water. A couple on another boat threw me a lifering (as I chose not to wear a lifejacket) then they pulled me out. Lucky they were there as I was solo. I made it to a marina where they patched me up & called an ambulance. Injuries were so bad that Doctors wanted to admit me for 7 days. But I declined & left after the cat scans & glueing of the head wounds & morphine. I won't be so arrogant in future. If it can happen to me it can happen to anyone. Only takes a seconds loss of concentration, or that little risk to avoid wet feet or a boat floating away, which can be recovered anyway. Take care & stay safe

Really enjoying your channel! Scary about the flooding, but good too to see the water full in the canals, it did seem like they might partially close because of low water, not too long ago? I could be wrong I'm on the other side of the world. Cheers, Happy and safe travels!

Very exciting to watch, but scary/stressful to be in. When I was visiting Oxford, about ten years ago, I remember major river flooding then. I can't quite remember time period. Protecting your floating home and investment at all costs. Does England have a warning system for canal/rivers or you see it in real time? I love Michael with the measuring tape.❤
@cruisingontheborder
@cruisingontheborder Год назад
Hola 👋 great comment as always 💕💕. It was scary but Michaels a great skipper and always stays calm. Yes it’s important we protect our home. Yes there are warnings on sections where the canal meeting rivers often, but nothing on this section hence why we did what we did. The Environment Agency do have an online warning system we also use. Ah ah yea the measuring tape was something we used in France in a similar situation it’s a good idea and helps to make decisions where necessary. 👍

To answer you question in regards to the fictional flux capacitor its main purpose was to turn 1.21 gigawatts of energy in to 1.210 million gigawatts once the Delorean reached 88mph interestingly the reason the Delorean was supposed to time travel at 88mph was because that was the cars top speed , also interesting geeky fact the Delorean didn't have anywhere you could feed spacial co ordinates into the time machine which would have meant they would only have been able to time travel within that exact spot

Good Day Michael & Jackie You have sure got into the bad weather, same where i live down south, not that i am on a boat. apparently it is going to last about 7 days on & off. It looks a lovely place were you are at the moment. Question. do they some times open the locks to balance out the water level? as it looks like you are on a river section, obviously this would be were there is no weir section running it off? Keep safe & good traveling on your journey if your still going towards Leeds.

Hi and good day to you too 💕. Tricky time of year and slightly unexpected we think! The CRT have a water management team who work to keep the levels good. They will often add water to the system…. Like turning a tap on and it pushes water down the network through a series of bywashes. Tricky job we are sure. Thanks for you comment. Stay dry and let’s hope the ☀️ shines soon. J & M

Michael and Jackie just a heads up Cows don't have horns only male bulls have horns ! when I was 8 years old in 1967 I lived next to a farm, once got chased through a field by a large bull so learnt my lesson the hard way lol

That blue plaque for Dr Emmett Brown has got me puzzled .. because both him & the “Flux Capacitor” are figments of Hollywood fiction.. and are from The Back to the Future trilogy of films! Doc Brown (played in the film by Christopher Lloyd) invents a Time Machine fuelled by the Flux Capacitor and builds it into a DeLorean Sports Car!! First film made in 1985 .. Pt 2 & 3 were filmed back to back in 1989 .. when I visited Universal Studios in LA that year .. they were filming these.. sadly didn’t get to see anything as they were closed sets! In pt 2 .. Doc gets trapped back in the late 1800’s and has to re-invent it all again .. this time using a Steam locomotive! The fictional background of Doc Brown is that his family originated from Germany .. so no idea why that plaque is doing in the UK!
